MLS Preview: Atlanta United FC (1-0-1) at Charlotte FC (0-2-0)

Last season, Charlotte FC and Atlanta United FC played each other twice, with Atlanta winning by a score of 2-1 in March and Charlotte winning by a score of 1-0 in April. Adam Armour, who is currently recovering from an injury, is still on either of the two teams that scored the goals in the two games.

For the third time in the club’s history, Charlotte FC has lost three matches in a row dating back to the end of the previous season. After its first three-match losing streak (February-March 2022), Charlotte responded with three wins in four matches (L1), and after its second, it won three games in a row (August-September).

Atlanta United will play its first game on the road in 2023 after opening the season with a win and a draw at home. Last season, the Five Stripes only won one of their last 16 road games in all competitions (D5 L10), and they gave up multiple goals in 13 of those 16 games.

Only 38.9 percent of Atlanta United’s attempts (14/36) have been taken inside the box, the lowest percentage among teams that have played two games this season. Seventeen of Charlotte FC’s 21 shots this season (81.0 percent) have been attempted inside the box, the highest percentage in MLS.

Thiago Almada assisted on the only goal scored by Atlanta United against Toronto on Saturday after scoring both of the Five Stripes’ goals in the opening match. Almada has scored or assisted on seven of Atlanta’s last eight MLS goals since the end of last season, including four consecutive goals.
