MBB-D3: Hampden-Sydney Tigers (15-4) at Roanoke Maroons (15-4)

Hampden-Sydney College, ranked No. 25 in this week’s D3hoops.com Top 25, plays on the road at Roanoke College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball action on Saturday, January 28, at 4:30 p.m. in Salem. H-SC has won six-straight and 13 of its last 14 games, and is 15-4 overall, 9-1 in the ODAC, while RC has won five of its last seven games, and is also 15-4 overall, 8-2 in the ODAC. The Maroons are getting votes in this week’s national rankings, and the game will be available to watch via Roanoke College.

Head Coach Caleb Kimbrough
H-SC is led by the fourth-year head coach who took over the program on April 4, 2019. The former head coach at Huntingdon (AL) College from 2016-19, Kimbrough is the 19th head coach in the 113-year history of the storied Hampden-Sydney program. He is no stranger to the ODAC, having played four years at Guilford and coached six years with the Quakers, and one year at Washington and Lee University. Caleb is 45-32 overall at the College, including 26-20 in ODAC games.

Scouting Hampden-Sydney
H-SC won its most recent game vs. 14th-ranked Guilford (NC), 64-57, on Jan. 25, in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium. The Tigers have three players averaging in double-figure scoring among their five starters that are each scoring at least 8.4 points per game. H-SC is led by junior forward Davidson Hubbard (Charlotte, NC) with his 14.2 points (57% FG) and 8.0 rebounds, followed by senior guard Ryan Clements (Conyers, GA) (12.6 points, 4.5 rebounds), junior guard and team captain Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) (10.2 points, 3.5 assists, 35 3FGs), junior guard DJ Wright (Greensboro, GA) (9.4 points, 26 3FGs) and junior guard/forward Josiah Hardy (Ashburn) (8.4 points, 5.5 rebounds). The Tigers are shooting 47% (559-1196) from the field, including 35% (157-446) on three-point field goals, and 74% (209-282) at the free throw line. H-SC averages 78.1 points, and allows 65.9 points, for a +12.2 scoring margin.

Scouting Roanoke
The Maroons are coached by seventh-year head coach Clay Nunley, who previously served as the head coach at Randolph College for nine years. RC won its most recent game at Ferrum, 101-53, on Jan. 25. The Maroons are led by senior guard/forward Kasey Draper who is averaging 16.2 points and 5.9 rebounds with 22 three-pointers, followed by junior forward Justin Kuthan (12.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, 75% FG) and sophomore guard Zach Rosenthal (10.5 points, 48 3FGs). RC shoots 48% (540-1131) from the field, including 37% (123-334) on three-pointers, and 66% (268-408) at the line; scoring 77.4 points, and yielding 63.7 points for a +13.7 scoring margin.

ODAC Series History
H-SC and RC are playing for the 93rd time as ODAC opponents since the Maroons became basketball members for the 1980-81 season. The Tigers narrowly lead the closely-contested series at 47-45, including a 70-64 home win last February 12, 2022. RC had won seven-straight prior, including-ironically-a 70-64 home win last Jan. 22, 2022.

Double-Double?
Davidson Hubbard has posted eight double-doubles this season, including four-straight, while averaging 20.0 points and 12.0 rebounds, and shooting 65% (35-54) from the field (6-12 3FGs). His impressive efforts have been at Greensboro (NC) on Nov. 8 (12p, 10r), vs. Alvernia (PA) on Nov. 11 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania (21p, 10r), at Mary Washington on Nov. 22 (22p, 11r), at Lynchburg on Dec. 3 (10p, 11r), vs. Bridgewater on Jan. 14 (18p, 13r), at Randolph on Jan. 18. (20p, 10r), at Salisbury (MD) on Jan. 21 (30p, 14r-career-highs) and vs. Guilford (NC) on Jan. 25 (12p, 11r). Davidson now has 11 career double-doubles, and has scored in double figures in 15 of 19 games this season.

1,000 Career Points
Ryan Clements recently became the 44th 1,000-point scorer in the 113-year history of the tradition-rich program at H-SC with his 18 points scored at Salisbury (MD) on Jan. 21. He is the first Tiger to reach the magical 1,000 career point plateau since 2016 (Mike Murray/1,178). Clements entered this season with 767 career points in 58 career games, and now totals 1,007 career points in 77 career games. Ryan has scored in double figures in 15 of 19 games this season.

H-SC Impressive At Music City Classic
The Tigers won two games at the Music City Classic on Dec. 19-20 at Welch College in Gallatin, Tennessee, defeating Transylvania (KY) 82-54 on Dec. 19, before taking an 83-64 victory past Berry (GA) on Dec. 20. H-SC was led by Adam Brazil (14.5 points, 3.0 assists, 7 3FGs), Ryan Clements (13.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.0 steals) and Davidson Hubbard (10.0 points, 5.5 rebounds). The Tigers took control of each contest early, leading 38-17 at halftime vs. TU, and 41-23 at halftime vs. BC. Roanoke participated in the event, as well, defeating Transylvania 75-67 and Berry 82-76 in overtime.
