The Arizona Coyotes are hoping to put an end to a five-game skid as they host the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday at Mullett Arena, entering the game on the heels of a 4-1 setback against the Pittsburgh Penguins Sunday. Barrett Hayton put Arizona ahead 1-0 at the 5:18 mark of the opening frame before four unanswered goals from the visiting team. San Jose won the lone meeting between the clubs earlier this season, a 3-2 decision on Dec. 13, a game in which Karel Vejmelka stopped 30 of 33 shot faced. The Coyotes are led offensively by Clayton Keller, with the All Star selection boasting 37 points on the season with four (1g, 3a) in the past five games.
STORYLINES
DEFENSE TO OFFENSE…With an assist provided by Marc-Edouard Vlasic on Oskar Lindblom’s second period goal at DAL on Dec. 31, San Jose became the first NHL team to have their defensemen reach 100 points on the season. San Jose blueliners then added five points (1g, 4a) on Jan. 1, with four of the six in the game finding the score sheet, and another three helpers on Jan. 6 at Anaheim. Most recently, Sharks defensemen combined for three points against Boston on Jan. 7 with Mario Ferraro scoring a goal and Matt Benning and Vlasic adding assists. The Sharks lead the league in assists (92) and points (111) from defensemen this season. Last campaign, the Sharks finished 23rd and 25th in the League with 151 points and 117 assists, respectively, from defensemen.
