Game 39 – 1/1 – SJS 5 at CHI 2…San Jose erased a 2-0 second-period deficit, rattling off five consecutive goals en route to a 5-2 win at the United Center. Erik Karlsson (0g, 2a) extended his point and assist streaks to a franchise-record 13 games with a pair of helpers in the tilt. Marc-Edouard Vlasic (1g, 0a) lit the lamp for his first goal of the season while playing in his 1,200th NHL game. Oskar Lindblom (0g, 2a) recorded his first multi-point effort of the campaign. Timo Meier (1g, 0a) netted his team-leading 21st goal of the season, his 20th since November 1 (28 games). A total of 12 Sharks skaters found their way onto the score sheet in the contest. TONIGHT’S OPPONENT – ANAHEIM DUCKS
The Anaheim Ducks enter Friday’s contest on the heels of a 2-0 victory over the Dallas Stars, goals coming from Adam Henrique and Mason McTavish in the opening frame. Netminder John Gibson made 35 saves in the win, his first shutout of the season. The Ducks, eighth in the Pacific Division, have won two of three contests against the Sharks on the year – both via shootout – with the Sharks prevailing in the lone meeting at the Honda Center, a 6-1 final score. The Ducks are paced by Troy Terry on the offensive end, the forward leading the club in goals, assists and points. All-time, the Ducks have gone 36-34-2-7 against San Jose as the home team.
STORYLINES
DEFENSE TO OFFENSE…With an assist provided by Marc-Edouard Vlasic on Oskar Lindblom’s second period goal at DAL on Dec. 31, San Jose became the first NHL team to have their defensemen reach 100 points on the season. San Jose blueliners then added five points (1g, 4a) on Jan. 1, with four of the six in the game finding the score sheet. The Sharks lead the league in assists (87) and points (105) from defensemen this season. The Ducks shut out the Dallas Stars in a 2-0 win, their first victory of the 2023 calendar year tonight at Honda Center. John GIbson stopped all 35 shots to earn his first shutout of the season and 24th of his career. Gibson tied Guy Hebert for second in franchise history with his 173rd career win as a Duck. Mason McTavish scored his seventh goal (PPG) and earned his 15th assist, his sixth multi-point game this season. Adam Henrique opened the scoring with his 12th goal of the season at 3:11 of the first period, his third goal the past four games. It was his fourth game-opening goal of the year, trailing only Troy Terry (5) for the team lead. Cam Fowler recorded an assist, the 299th of his career, one shy of becoming the fifth player in franchise history to record 300 assists. TONIGHT’S GAME: The Anaheim Ducks continue a franchise record 10-game homestand tonight with the seventh straight contest on home ice vs. the San Jose Sharks at Honda Center (7 p.m. PT, TV: ESPN+ AUDIO: Ducks Stream). Anaheim enters tonight’s game with points in three of the last five contests (2-2-1) and five of its last 10 overall (4-4-1). The Ducks enter tonight’s contest having killed 16 of the last 17 penalties (94.1%) dating to Dec. 21 (spanning six games), while also killing all opposition power plays in four of the last five contests (15-of-16, 93.8%).
