GOLDEN KNIGHTS LAST GAME RECAP
December 13 – Vegas Golden Knights 6, Winnipeg Jets 5
The Vegas Golden Knights (21-9-1) used a three-goal third period to defeat the Winnipeg Jets (18-9-1), 6-5, on Tuesday night at Canada Life Centre. Vegas swept the season series against Winnipeg with its third win against the Jets in their final regular season meeting. Midway through the opening frame, Mark Scheifele tipped a shot past Adin Hill to give Winnipeg the 1-0 lead. Two minutes later, Daniil Miromanov answered with his first NHL goal to tie the game for the visitors. With 1.6 seconds to play in the period, Mark Stone gave Vegas the lead as he scored for the second game in the row. After Morgan Barron knotted the game back up, Stone scored again to give the Golden Knights a 3-2 edge. Sam Gagner added a goal before the break as the teams entered the final frame level at 3-3. Scheifele’s second of the game gave the Jets a 4-3 lead, but Jonathan Marchessault answered on a powerplay midway through the period and brought the game back to even once again. Marchessault scored another power-play goal with 2:16 to go and William Karlsson tacked on an empty-net goal as the Golden Knights went up, 6-4. Scheifele completed the hat trick with one second left and Vegas claimed the 6-5 win.

LAST GAME BY THE NUMBERS

  • Stone’s multi-goal performance helps him reach his 500th career point
  • Miromanov’s first career tally and two helpers marks his first multi-point game of his career
  • Marchessault’s two PPGs makes him the second Golden Knight to do it in a single period
  • Chandler Stephenson’s four assists matches the VGK road record and his career high
  • Hill wins his third game over Winnipeg this season, stopping 29 of 34 shots, and extends his current win streak to three games
  • Vegas improves to 21-9-1 on the season and 13-2-1 away from home, the best road record in the NHL

Easy Steph-y
Chandler Stephenson’s four assists in Winnipeg on Tuesday night ties his career high and the road record for VGK (last Stone 2/23/20). Stephenson has five assists in Vegas’ last two games and leads in helpers with 21 on the season (T-10th for NHL forwards). The forward is second in overall points on the team with 27 through 31 games, including three game-winning goals. Stephenson’s 62.1 faceoff win percentage ranks 10th in the NHL among all qualified skaters.

Aye-Aye Captain
Mark Stone reached the 500 point milestone on Tuesday when he tallied two goals in Winnipeg. It took Stone 572 games to reach the feat with 191 goals and 309 assists to total the 500 mark. Stone’s multi-goal performance against the Jets was his second of the season and he has now scored three goals in Vegas’ last two games. The Vegas captain has seven points in his last 10 games (4-3—7). Stone’s 12 goals are just two off the team lead of 14, and he ranks third in scoring for Vegas on the season.

Heating Up
Jonathan Marchessault scored back-to-back power play goals against the Jets on Tuesday to give Vegas the third period lead. Marchessault’s power play goals mark the fifth time a VGK player has scored two in a game; he is the only player to have done it twice with the club (last 2/13/20). Both of Marchessault’s goals came in the third period, making him the second Golden Knight to have two man-up tallies in the same period (Paul Stastny 10/13/19). The forward now has six goals in six games, coming off a four game goal streak (Dec. 3-9) that ended on Sunday in a 3-1 decision to Boston. This was the first time of his career that Marchessault had a four-game goal streak. Marchessault has taken the lead in goals scored on the season with 14 for Vegas.

Miromanov Breaks the Ice
In his 17th career game, Daniil Miromanov potted his first ever NHL goal and posted his first multi-point game. Miromanov got the scoring started for the Golden Knights in Winnipeg to level the score to 1-1. He then went on to be the primary assist on both of Marchessault’s powerplay goals to tie the franchise record for points in a game by a rookie. The defenseman had only recorded a singular assist in his previous 16 games for the Golden Knights over parts of two season. Miromanov had 13 points (6-7—13) in 17 games for the Henderson Silver Knights, Vegas’ AHL affiliate, before being called up on December 1.

Down to the Wire with Winnipeg
In the last two meetings between the Golden Knights and the Jets, there have been three goals that were scored in the final 10 seconds of a period or overtime. In Tuesday’s matchup, Mark Stone snuck a tally past Hellebuyck at the 19:58 mark of the first period. In the same contest, Mark Scheifele of Winnipeg forced one more goal before the end of regulation with one second remaining on the clock to bring the Jets within one. Finally, Jack Eichel netted the game-winner for Vegas against Winnipeg in the final seven seconds of overtime on October 30.

Comeback Kids
The Vegas Golden Knights completed their sixth comeback win of the season on Tuesday night, tied with the Tampa Bay Lightning for the most in the NHL this season. This also marks the second time that the Golden Knights have comeback to beat the Jets this season in back-to-back meetings. Vegas has outscored their opponents 36-35 in the third period, has won three in overtime, and has a .429 win percentage when trailing after the second period (leads NHL).

Road Trip Warriors
The VGK road record stands at 13-2-1, the best road record in the NHL. 27 of Vegas’ 43 points have come on the road, including the six points the Golden Knights brought home after going 3-1-0 as the visiting team earlier this month. In November, Vegas went 5-0-0 on the road, which saw scoring from 13 different Golden Knights. With their 13th win on enemy ice coming in Winnipeg, the Golden Knights will look for 14 in Chicago on Thursday night.

Cotter the Kid
Paul Cotter has recorded 25 hits in the last five games, leading all Golden Knights in that time. Cotter recorded a career high of six hits in the victory over the Boston Bruins on Dec. 5, when he also scored two goals. Cotter matched his best on December 7, logging another six hits against the New York Rangers, and then for a third time on Sunday against the Bruins at T-Mobile Arena.

Rookie of the Month
Logan Thompson has been strong in net for the Golden Knights and was named the NHL’s Rookie of the Month for the month of November after going 8-2-0 with a 2.88 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage in 10 starts. On Vegas’ last road trip, Thompson defended the Golden Knights in two shootouts, allowing only one shootout goal and making 40+ saves in back-to-back starts. Thompson has stopped 86.2% of shootout attempts faced in his career (25-of-29); only Boston’s Linus Ullmark has a better shootout save percentage among active NHL goaltenders who have faced at least 20 attempts in their career.

Jack of all Trades
Despite having missed four games for the Golden Knights, Jack Eichel continues to lead Vegas in points 13-16—29. Eichel has points in 14 of his last 19 games for Vegas (10-12—22), including seven multiple-point efforts. His +17 rating is fourth among all skaters.

Martinez Block Party
Golden Knights defenseman Alec Martinez leads the NHL with 118 blocked shots in 31 games and is the first player in the league to reach the century mark this season. Martinez has led the team in blocked shots in 20 of 31 games.

The Shorty King
Reilly Smith netted his third shorthanded goal of the season against St. Louis on November 12. Smith leads the league with three shorties (tied with MIN Connor Dewar) and Vegas is tied for the second most shorthanded by a team with four. Smith’s 11 shorthanded goals since joining Vegas in 2017-18 are the most in franchise history.

Spreading the Wealth
Eight Golden Knights have recorded 20 or more points this season, which is the most of any team in the league. Jack Eichel leads the club with 29 points, followed by, Chandler Stephenson with 27 points and Jonathan Marchessault and Mark Stone with 24 points each.

Against the Blackhawks
The Golden Knights’ matchup against the Blackhawks marks the second meeting of three this season. Vegas owns an all-time record of 10-2-1 against Chicago and the Golden Knights have never lost in regulation at the United Center. Vegas’ first loss in Chicago came in their last visit to the Windy City in a shootout. The Golden Knights first saw the Blachawks this season on Oct. 13 at T-Mobile Arena for Vegas’ home opener. Paul Cotter was the lone goal scorer of the game to give the Golden Knights the 1-0 win. Logan Thompson had a perfect performance when the goaltender saved 27-of-27 shots faced to post his first shutout of the season, and the second of his career.
