ROAD SCHOLARS
With wins at PIT (11/29), STL (12/1) and LAK (12/3) followed by an overtime loss at ANA (12/6), Carolina has earned a 3-0-1 record (7 points) through four of six consecutive road games. With a point in either of their next two games, the Hurricanes would tie for the fourth-most points on any six-game road trip in franchise history, and two more wins would give them a franchise-record 11 points. Before this stretch, Carolina also went 1-0-3 in its previous four road games from 11/14-11/25, and the Hurricanes have now extended their road point streak to eight games (11/14-12/6: 4-0-4), marking just the fifth road point streak of eight or more games in franchise history (last: 3/7/10-4/6/10: 5-0-3). Carolina has posted a 9-3-5 record away from home in 2022-23, tied for the third-most road wins and marking the second-most road games played of any NHL team this season.

SOPHOMORE SETH
Seth Jarvis registered an assist for the second straight game at ANA (12/6) to extend his point streak to six games (11/25-12/6: 2g, 4a). He is now one game shy of tying his career-long point streak (4/16/22-4/28/22: 3-4—7 in 7 GP), and his streak is tied for the longest by any Hurricanes skater in 2022-23 (Martin Necas: 10/24-11/4: 4g, 6a). Jarvis has now earned seven points in his last eight games (11/21-12/6: 2g, 5a), with a team-high +6 rating over that span, after recording just one assist in his previous nine games (11/6- 11/23).
NEED AN ASSIST?
Brent Burns tallied an assist at ANA (12/6), extending his assist/point streak to three games (12/1-12/3: 1g, 4a). He posted back-to-back multi-point games at STL (1g, 1a) and LAK (2a) from 12/1-12/3, becoming the first Hurricanes blueliner and fourth skater to accomplish the feat in 2022-23 (Sebastian Aho, 10/17-10/20: 1g, 5a; Andrei Svechnikov, 10/17-10/20: 5g, 1a; Martin Necas, 10/29-10/31: 1g, 3a). He posted two power-play points (1g, 1a) in those games and has now posted nine points (2g, 7a) on the man-advantage this season, tied with Svechnikov (3g, 6a) for the team lead. Burns’ 15 assists rank third on the team in 2022-23, and his seven power-play assists are a team high.
SLIM SKJEISY
Brady Skjei scored Carolina’s opening goal at ANA (12/6), giving him goals in back-to-back games (also 12/3 at LAK: 1g). He scored in three consecutive contests for the first time in his NHL career last season, tallying six points (4g, 2a) from 1/1-1/8. Skjei ranks second in scoring among all Hurricanes defensemen with nine points (4g, 5a) in 2022-23, and his four goals are tied with Brent Burns for the team lead among blueliners. Carolina has now gotten a goal from the blue line in each of its last five games (Brett Pesce, 11/26-11/29; Burns, 12/1; Skjei: 12/3-12/6) after Hurricanes defensemen combined for seven goals through the team’s first 21 games (10/12-11/25).
SHOOT YOUR SHOT
Carolina outshot ANA 37-30 on Tuesday, and the team has outshot its opponents in 21 of 26 games in 2022-23, including 13 of its 14 wins. The Hurricanes have now registered at least 35 shots in 15 games this season, including five of their last seven contests, and their 15 such games trail only FLA (19) and NJD (17) for the league lead. Carolina is tied for the second-most shots on goal per game of any NHL team (35.3) while allowing the fewest (26.5), and the team’s +8.8 shot differential leads the NHL.
BETTER CALL STAAL
Jordan Staal scored the game-tying goal late in the second period at ANA (12/6), giving him two goals in his last three games (also 12/1 at STL: 1g). He had been held without a goal in seven consecutive games (11/17-11/29) since posting a three-game goal/point streak from 11/10-11/14 (3g, 1a) that stands as the longest goal streak by any Hurricanes player this season.
BONUS HOCKEY
With an overtime loss at ANA (12/6), the Hurricanes have now had five of their last seven road games decided in overtime (11/19-12/6: 1-0-4). Carolina has now had a league-high eight contests decided in overtime this season, with a 2-6 record in those games (.250). In Rod Brind’Amour’s first four seasons behind the bench (2018-22), Carolina went 22-22 in games decided in overtime (.500) and finished with a win percentage of at least .455 in those contests in each of those campaigns. The Hurricanes have already suffered as many losses in games decided in overtime this season as they did in both 2020-21 (5-6) and 2021-22 (6-6).
CZECH HIM OUT
Martin Necas was held without a point at ANA (12/6), ending his four-game point streak (11/26-12/1: 3g, 2a). He tallied two points (1g, 1a) at LAK (12/3) and has posted a team-high eight multi-point games in 2022-23, matching his total in 78 contests last season. Necas has recorded nine points in his last 10 games (11/17-12/6: 5g, 4a), pacing the team with five goals over that span, and he leads the Hurricanes with 28 points (12g, 16a) this season, just two goals shy of his total from 2021-22 (14).
GOAL-ORIENTED
Andrei Svechnikov scored his team-leading 15th goal of the season at LAK (12/3) and has earned seven points in his last eight games (11/21-12/6: 3g, 4a). He has required 10 fewer contests to reach the 15-goal mark than in any previous NHL/Hurricanes season (2019-20: 15-21—36 in 35 GP), and he has already tied his 55-game total from two seasons ago (2020-21: 15-27—42). Svechnikov has scored 10 of his 15 goals on the road and ranks tied with Bo Horvat (VAN) for the league lead in that category in 2022-23. Carolina is 8-1-1 when he scores a goal and 12-2-2 when he registers a point, and only Martin Necas (13-2-3) has found the scoresheet in more of the Hurricanes’ wins this season.
TAKING ADVANTAGE
After being held scoreless on the power play in six straight games from 11/12-11/23 (0-for-20), Carolina has converted on the man-advantage in four of its last six contests (11/25-12/6: 6-for-17). Five different Hurricanes skaters have scored a power-play goal over that span: Martin Necas (11/26 vs. CGY, 12/3 at LAK), Brent Burns (12/1 at STL), Jesperi Kotkaniemi (11/25 at BOS), Stefan Noesen (11/25 at BOS) and Brett Pesce (11/26 vs. CGY). Necas paces the team with four power-play goals in 2022-23, already tied for his second-highest single-season total (2019-20: 5 PPG in 64 GP, 2020-21: 4 PPG in 53 GP). Noesen has tallied a team-high three points (1g, 2a) on the man-advantage over the last six games and ranks fourth on the team in that category this season (3-4—7).

STORYLINES
HOSTING THE HURRICANES
The Islanders host the Carolina Hurricanes tonight, the second of four meetings between the two clubs this season. Carolina visited the Islanders just once last year, on April 24, 2022. It was a 5-2 decision in the Hurricanes’ favor. The Islanders look to improve upon their 7-2-0 record against Metropolitan Division opponents tonight, and improve to 4-1-0 on the back-end of back-to-back series this season. The last time these teams met in October, the Islanders were on the front-end of a back-to-back series. Islanders forward Casey Cizikas has found the scoresheet in each of his last two games against the Hurricanes. He recorded his first goal of the season and a team-high +3 rating last night, to help the Islanders hand the Devils their fourth regulation loss at home this season.
SEVEN STRAIGHT
Last night in New Jersey, Islanders forward Brock Nelson extended his point streak to a career-high seven games as he recorded his third two goal game of the season. Nelson is the second Islander to record a point streak of at least seven games this season (Barzal). Nelson leads the Islanders in goals (14), and game-winning goals (5). Last night, Nelson’s second goal of the game was the eventual game-winning goal. His five game-winners are second-most in the NHL (L. Draisaitl, 7), and matches Nelson’s career-high, which he recorded in the 2019-20 season, and again in 2021-22.
QUICK GOALS
The Islanders have scored two goals in under a minute in their last three straight games, and four times in their last six games. Last night in Newark, the Islanders scored in under a minute for the first time on the road, as Casey Cizikas and Oliver Wahlstrom found the back of the net 34 seconds apart in the second frame to help the Islanders earn a 6-4 win over the Devils.
SOGs
Islanders captain Anders Lee recorded a career-high 10 shots on goal last night in Newark. He is the second Islander (Nelson, Nov. 12 vs. Columbus) and the sixth NHLer this season to record ten shots on goal in a single contest. Brock Nelson had eight shots on goal. It is the first time since December 23, 1978 that two Islanders teammates each shared at least eight shots on goal in a single contest.
ASSISTS LEADER
Mathew Barzal recorded his 26th and 27th assists of the season last night against New Jersey, extending his teamlead. Barzal also leads the Islanders in points (30) through 28 games. Barzal’s 27 assists are tied with Leon Draisaitl and Nikita Kucherov for third-most in the league, and are second amongst Metropolitan Division skaters (Panarin, 28). Barzal recorded two assists the last time the Islanders and Hurricanes met on October 28.
FINDING THE SCORESHEET
Islanders forwards Mathew Barzal and Brock Nelson have not been held off the scoresheet for two consecutive games yet this season (each recorded two points last night in Newark). They are two of 15 NHLers so far this season who have not been held pointless for two straight games.
AGAINST THE METRO
The Islanders began their division play this season with a 4-1 loss to New Jersey on October 20. Since then, the Islanders have a 7-1-0 record in the Metropolitan Division. They collected six straight Metropolitan Division victories after October 2, and they have an 8-2-0 record in their last ten matchups against Eastern Conference teams.
SEASON-HIGH
Islanders defenseman Scott Mayfield skated 25:05 TOI and recorded an assist in last night’s victory against the New Jersey Devils. His 25:05 TOI is the most by an Islander so far this season and the most that Mayfield has skated in a single contest since January 25, 2018, against the Vegas Golden Knights.
MULTI-ASSIST GAMES
Islanders defenseman Alexander Romanov and forward Mathew Barzal each recorded multi-assist contests last night in Newark. Romanov’s was his first multi-assist game as an Islandee and was the second in his career (Last: November 27, 2021 vs. Pittsburgh). Barzal’s was his seventh multi-assist game of the season.
417
Islanders forward Zach Parise is tied with Anders Lee for second on the Islanders in goals, and tallied his ninth of the season (third PPG of the year) on Tuesday vs. St. Louis. It was his 417th career goal, and he passes Tony Amonte for tenth-most amongst American-born skaters in NHL history.
8
Islanders defenseman Noah Dobson leads blueliners in points, with 18 (eight goals, ten assists) and goals (8) through 27 games. Dobson’s eight goals are tied with John Carlson (WSH) for third-most by an NHL defenseman this season, behing Rasmus Dahlin (9) and Erik Karlsson (11). Dobson scored his eighth goal of the season and added an assist on Tuesday night vs. St. Louis, his fifth multi-point game of the season.
15
Last night in New Jersey, Islanders forward Cal Clutterbuck tallied his third goal of the season and added an assist to help the Islanders score six goals for the third time this season. It was Clutterbuck’s first multi-point game since February 9 of last season, against the Vancouver Canucks.
VARLAMOV
Islanders netminder Semyon Varlamov turned away 25 fo 29 shots faced last night against the New Jersey Devils to help the Islanders earn their 17th win of the season and their seventh against a Metropolitan Division opponent. Varlamov faced seven minutes and 36 seconds of an extra Devils attacker to help the Islanders improve to 1-1-0 against their Metropolitan Division foe this season. Varlamov tallied his sixth win of the season, and his 12th shutout as an Islander, when he turned away all 21 shots he faced on December 4 vs. Chicago. It was his first shutout since April 1 (at NY Rangers) and the 37th of his NHL career. Varlamov’s 37 career shutouts are tied with Sergei Bobrovsky for tenth-most amongst active NHL netminders. The 21-save showing earned the Islanders their third shutout of the 2022-23 campaign, becoming just the third NHL club to record three shutouts so far this season (Detroit, Winnipeg).
FIRST AS AN ISLANDER
Hudson Fasching made his Islanders debut on December 4 vs. Chicago. In his second game as an Islander on Tuesday vs. St. Louis, Fasching scored his second career NHL goal in his 40th career NHL game. It was the Milwaukee, WI native’s first goal since he scored in his NHL debut on March 26, 2016 vs. Winnipeg (as a member of the Buffalo Sabres).
