Astros sign free agent 1B José Abreu

HOUSTON, TX – The Astros have signed free agent first baseman José Abreu to a three-year contract. Additional terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Abreu, 35, is a former American League MVP, three-time All-Star and a three-time Silver Slugger Award recipient. He’s spent his entire nine-year Major League career with the Chicago White Sox. For his career, he’s batted .292 (1445×4954) with 243 home runs, 863 RBI, 697 runs and a .860 OPS (.354 OBP/ .506 SLG). Since entering the Majors in 2014, Abreu leads the American League in total bases (2,509), and games played (1,270). He is also second in hits (1,445) and RBI (863) and third in home runs (243). Additionally, he has played in 152 or more games in six of his eight full seasons in Majors. In the COVID-shortened 2020 season, he played in all 60 of the White Sox games.

With the White Sox in 2022, Abreu batted .304 (183×601) with 15 home runs, 75 RBI, a career-high 62 walks, and a .824 OPS (.378 OBP/.446 SLG.). He also ranked second in hits, third in multi-hit games (53) and fifth in batting average in the AL.

In 2020, Abreu earned the AL MVP after he batted .317 (76×240) with 19 home runs, 60 RBI, 148 total bases and a .987 OPS during the COVID-shortened season. He led the AL in hits, RBI, slugging percentage and total bases. In seven career postseason games, Abreu has hit .321 (9×28) with a home run and five RBI (.871 OPS).
