ROD’S PLAN
Sunday’s game will mark Rod Brind’Amour’s 300th game as the Hurricanes’ head coach. He will join Jack Evans (1983-88: 374 GC), Paul Maurice (1995-03, 2008-11: 920 GC), Peter Laviolette (2003-08: 323 GC) and Bill Peters (2014-18: 328 GC) as the fifth coach in franchise history to reach the milestone, and he has already posted 25 more wins than any of the other four managed through their first 300 games behind the bench (Laviolette: 157-111-6-26). Brind’Amour’s 182 career wins rank fifth in NHL history by any head coach through his first 300 games, and with a win over the Maple Leafs, he would tie for third on that list. Since he took over as Carolina’s head coach in 2018-19, the Hurricanes rank first in the NHL in penalty kill percentage (84.5%), third in wins, tied for third in shots on goal per game (28.5), fourth in points (393) and points percentage (.657) and fifth in faceoff win percentage (51.9%), and they have allowed the fewest shots against per game (28.5) and the third-fewest goals against per game (2.61).

TOO GOOD
Sebastian Aho tallied four points (3g, 1a) vs. BUF (11/4), including the fifth hat trick of his NHL/Hurricanes career. With his third goal, he
tied Erik Cole (2008, 2009-11) for the second-most hat tricks since relocation (Eric Staal, 2003-16: 13) and registered his 416th career point (189g, 227a), tying Jeff O’Neill (1995-04: 198-218—416) for the fifth-most points by any player in Whalers/Hurricanes history. Aho posted the seventh four-point game of his career and his first since 12/7/19 vs. MIN (3-2—5), tying Kevin Dineen (1984-91, 1995-99) for the fourth-most in franchise history. He scored his first two goals in the first period, marking his first multi-goal period since 3/18/21, when he scored twice in the second period against CBJ.

Kevin Dineen (1984-91, 1995-99): 7

MARTIN’S ROOM
Martin Necas recorded three points (1g, 2a) vs. BUF (11/4), extending his career-long point streak to six games (10/24-11/4: 4g, 6a). He paces the team in assists (10) and points (17) this season, and his 17 points are the second-most by any Whalers/Hurricanes player through the first 11 games of a season (Eric Staal, 2005-06: 9-13—22). Necas has scored a goal in four of his last five games (10/28-11/4: 4g) and earned a point in 10 of 11 games this season, becoming just the seventh player in franchise history to accomplish the latter (11: Ron Francis, 1984-85; Sebastian Aho: 2018-19 // 10: Jeff O’Neill, 2002-03; Eric Staal, 2005-06; Rod Brind’Amour: 2007-08; Andrei Svechnikov, 2021-22).

8 OUT OF 11
The Hurricanes won their fourth consecutive game vs. BUF (11/4), marking their longest win streak in 2022-23. Friday’s game marked their first regulation win during the streak, as they defeated PHI in overtime on 10/29 before posting back-to-back shootout wins over WSH (10/31) and TBL (11/3). Carolina has now posted an 8-2-1 record (.773) this season, marking the third-highest points percentage of any NHL team in 2022-23 (BOS, 10-2-0: .833; VGK, 11-2-0: .846) and tied for the Whalers/Hurricanes’ second-most wins through the opening 11 games of any campaign (10: 2021-22 // 8: 2020-21, 2005-06).

MAJOR DISTRIBUTION
Sebastian Aho (3-1—4), Martin Necas (1-2—3), Seth Jarvis (0-2—2), Andrei Svechnikov (0-2—2) and Teuvo Teravainen (0-2—2) each earned two or more points against the Sabres on Friday, marking the first time this season that five Hurricanes skaters accomplished the feat in the same game. Jarvis and Teravainen each posted their first multi-point games in 2022-23, while Aho registered his first multigoal game. Necas has now posted three multi-assist games and five multi-point games this season (both team highs), and he has become just the fifth player since relocation to post at least five multi-point outings through Carolina’s opening 11 games of any season (6: Sami Kapanen, 1999-00; Eric Staal, 2005-06 // 5: Eric Staal, 2007-08; Andrei Svechnikov, 2019-20).

THE CATCH UP
After facing 1-0 and 2-1 deficits in the first period against BUF on Friday, Carolina scored four unanswered goals en route to a 5-3 win over the Sabres. The Hurricanes have now come from behind to win each of their last four games, as they also recovered from a 3-2 deficit in the third period at PHI (10/29), a 2-1 deficit in the second period vs. WSH (10/31) and a 3-2 deficit in the third period at TBL (11/3). This stretch marks the fourth time in franchise history that Hartford/Carolina has registered four or more consecutive comeback wins (5: 1/31/96-2/11/96, 10/24/05-11/3/05 // 4: 1/8/17-1/14/17), and with additional comeback victories vs. CBJ (10/12) and at SJS (10/14), the Hurricanes now lead the NHL with six come-from-behind wins in 2022-23.

TREACHEROUS FINNS
Teuvo Teravainen (2a) and Jesperi Kotkaniemi (1g) each found the scoresheet vs. BUF (11/4), ending scoring droughts of four games (10/28-11/3) and seven games (10/20-11/3), respectively. Teravainen ranks tied for fourth on the team with five assists in 2022-23, with all five coming on goals scored by Sebastian Aho. He has now posted 45 multi-assist games in his Hurricanes career, marking the seventh-most of any player in franchise history and the most of any Hurricanes skater since 2016-17. Kotkaniemi scored his first goal of the season on Friday, and it stood as the seventh game-winning goal of his NHL career. He scored three game-winning goals in 2021- 22, finishing tied for sixth on the team in that category. Kotkaniemi also won 72.7% of his faceoffs against BUF (8-for-11) and has now won a career-high 58.0% of his draws this season.

SHOT FOR ME
The Hurricanes outshot the Sabres 33-25 on Friday, and they have now outshot their opponent in 10 of 11 games this season. Carolina registered a season-high 55 shots at TBL (11/3), marking the second-most shots in a single game by any NHL team in 2022-23 (FLA, 10/29 vs. OTT: 58), and nine different Hurricanes skaters recorded at least four shots on goal for just the second time in franchise history (10/13/18 at MIN: 9). Carolina has now posted the third-most shots of any team per game this season (37.6) while allowing the second-fewest shots of any team (26.1), and the team’s +11.5 shot differential ranks second in the NHL, behind only NJD (+15.3). Brent Burns posted a team-high six shots on Friday, and his team-high 47 shots in 2022-23 are the second-most of any NHL defenseman this season, trailing only Roman Josi (NSH, 50).

LIGHT UP
Sebastian Aho scored on the power play vs. BUF (11/4), marking Carolina’s third straight game with a goal on the man-advantage (10/31-11/4: 3 PPG). The Hurricanes have tied their longest streak of games with a power-play goal from last season, as they accomplished the feat in three straight games five times in 2021-22. Carolina’s last such streak of four or more games came in 2020-21, when the Hurricanes scored a goal on the man-advantage in seven consecutive games (2/27-3/11: 12 PPG). Aho now ranks tied for second on the team in power-play goals (2) and power-play points (5), while Andrei Svechnikov, who registered the secondary assist on his goal, leads the team in both of those categories (3-3—6). Martin Necas tallied the primary assist and has now tallied five points (2g, 3a) on the man-advantage this season, surpassing his point total on the man-advantage in 78 games in 2021-22 (2-2—4).

STAAL ME
Against the Sabres on Friday, Jordan Staal won 66.7% of his faceoffs, marking his second-highest win rate in any game this season (10/14 at SJS: 68.8%) and registered a team-high four hits. His next game will mark his 673rd with the Hurricanes, as he looks to tie Jeff O’Neill (1995-04) for the sixth-most games played in franchise history. Staal recently passed Cam Ward (2005-18: 668 GP) for seventh on that list at PHI (10/29).
