VISITING THE RED WINGS
Last season, the Islanders visited Little Caesars Arena twice in ten days, between Dec. 4 and Dec. 14. The Islanders collected a point in an OT loss on December 4, and fell to the Red Wings 2-1 in regulation on December 14. Since 2018, the Islanders are 8-2-1 vs. the Red Wings. The last time these teams met was March 24, 2022 at UBS Arena, when Anders Lee, Mathew Barzal, Anthony Beauvillier and Brock Nelson each recorded multi-point games in a 5-2 victory on home ice. Today’s matchup is the first of three meetings between the two clubs this season. Zach Parise leads active Islanders in career points against Detroit, tallying 25 (12g, 13a) in 24 games. Parise and Brock Nelson are tied for the team-lead in goals (12). Mathew Barzal has tallied 18 assists in just 11 career games against Detroit, leading the Islanders. His 18 assists against Detroit are second only to the Rangers (22) in assists he has recorded against a single opponent. The Islanders enter today’s game looking to capture their first win of the season vs. an Atlantic Division opponent: The Atlantic is the only division in which the Islanders have not yet earned a win so far this season.

FIVE STRAIGHT
The Islanders enter today’s game with five straight wins since last Wednesday, Oct. 26. It is the first time they have recorded five consecutive wins since March 2, 2021. Last season, their longest win streak was four games. The Islanders have outscored their opponents 22-10 since last Wednesday. The New Jersey Devils are the only other Metropolitan team to record wins in five straight so far this season. The Islanders are one of three Metropolitan teams to have captured wins in their last three straight road games (Carolina, New Jersey).

OUTSCORING THE OPPOSITION
They have been most productive in the third period, having outscored opponents 12-3 in the third in their last five games, and 12 of the last 22 Islander goals (since Wednesday, Oct. 26) have been scored in the third period. The Islanders have found the back of the net in the third frame in each of their first 11 games of the season (7-4-0), for a total of 20 third-period tallies. Thursday night was the fourth straight game in which the Islanders recorded an empty-net goal. The Islanders matched a single-game season high as they recorded four goals in the second period on Thursday in St. Louis. The Islanders are 6-2-0 when they find the back of the net in the middle frame, and have outscored opponents 16-11 in the second period this season.

GOALTENDING
Islanders goaltender Semyon Varlamov has posted a 7-6-0 record including a .925 SV% and 2.26 GAA in 13 starts against the Red Wings. Amongst active goaltenders who have seen Detroit more than 10 times, only three have posted a better save percentage (Bobrovsky, Allen, Price). Saturday night was Varlamov’s 50th win as an Islander, as he becomes the 12th goalie in franchise history to record 50 wins with the club. Ilya Sorokin earned his fourth consecutive win on Thursday night vs. the Blues. Sorokin and New Jersey’s Vitek Vanecek (four) are the only Metropolitan Division netminders with active win streaks. Sorokin has made 127 saves on 132 shots in his last four games, allowing just five goals since Oct. 26 3000 Today’s game is Alternate Governor, General Manager and President of Hockey Operations Lou Lamoriello’s 3,000th game as a general manager (including playoffs).

BLUELINERS
Through 11 games, Islanders blueliners have recorded 26 points, and their nine goals so far this season leads the NHL. Defensemen Noah Dobson (2) and Alexander Romanov (1) added three assists on Thursday in St. Louis. An Islanders defensman has found the scoresheet in nine of eleven games so far this season. Ryan Pulock has recorded a plus-3 rating in three different contests this season, including twice in the last five games. He leads the Islanders with a +9 rating. Adam Pelech set a new single-game season high amongst Islanders skaters on Thursday as he skated 24:30 TOI (his highest TOI since Dec. 19, 2021). Pelech has recorded two multi-point games through eleven games this season. Last year,
Pelech needed 64 games tow record two multi-point outings. Scott Mayfield and Robin Salo each recorded their first career multi-goal games on Oct. 15. It was the first time since January 1993 that two Islanders defensemen have recorded multi-goal outings in the same contest. Robin Salo’s +4 rating on October 15 was a career-high and matched the Islanders’ single-game high set last season by Brock Nelson (Nov. 4 vs. MTL). He is the first Islander defenseman since Denis Potvin (most recently in 1982) to record two goals and record a +4 rating in the same game.
