GOLDEN KNIGHTS LAST GAME RECAP
October 25 – Vegas Golden Knights 4, San Jose Sharks 2
Phil Kessel made NHL history and helped the Vegas Golden Knights (6-2-0) to a 4-2 win against the San Jose Sharks (2-7-0) on Tuesday night at SAP Center. After being honored for breaking the NHL’s iron man record, Kessel used a burst of speed to break in on goal and give the Golden Knights a 1-0 lead at 15:51 of the first period. The Sharks potted two goals in the second period and carried a 2-1 edge into the final frame. Less than a minute into the third, Shea Theodore fired a wrist shot from the point that beat James Reimer and brought the score to 2-2. William Karlsson and Mark Stone scored 1:02 apart to quickly put Vegas ahead by a pair with less than eight minutes to play. Adin Hill locked the Sharks out in the final minutes as the Golden Knights secured the 4-2 win.
LAST GAME BY THE NUMBERS
- Phil Kessel skates in his 990th consecutive NHL game, breaking the all-time league record
- Kessel records his 400th career goal and first goal as a Golden Knight
- In back-to-back games, the Golden Knights have scored within the first minute of the third period
- Theodore led with two points on the night (1G, 1A)
- Chandler Stephenson has recorded a point in four consecutive games (3G, 1A)
- Hill stops 29 of 31 shots on the night to secure a win against his old club
- Vegas improves to 6-2-0 on their 2022-23 campaign and extends their franchise record to 19-1-4 against San Jose, which is the best points percentage by any team in the league against a divisional opponent since 2017-18
The Iron Man
Phil Kessel appeared in his 990th consecutive game on Tuesday night against the San Jose Sharks. This breaks Keith Yandle’s all-time record for the most consecutive games played in NHL history. Additionally, Kessel scored his 400th career goal in the first period to become the 12th American-born player to score 400 NHL goals. Kessel joined the Golden Knights roster in August after skating for two seasons with the Coyotes. A two-time Stanley Cup champion (2015-16, 2016-17), Kessel has 959 points (400 G, 559 A) in 1,212 career NHL games. He ranks sixth among active players in career games played and ninth in career points. Kessel’s streak started when he was a Maple Leaf in a matchup against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Nov. 3, 2009. The only players from that game that are still active are Luke Schenn (VAN), Victor Hedman (TBL), and Steven Stamkos (TBL). Alec Martinez and Alex Pietrangelo are the only members of the Golden Knights who had started their NHL careers when Kessel’s streak began.
Of all other skaters on the Golden Knights, the next longest active streak belongs to William Karlsson, who has skated in 67 consecutive games. For Karlsson to tie Kessel’s streak he would have to play in every game from now until the 28th game of the 2033-34 season. The 17 Vegas skaters who have active consecutive game streaks combine for 476 consecutive games, less than half of Kessel’s streak.
Throughout his streak, Kessel has dressed for four different franchises Toronto (446), Pittsburgh (328), Arizona (208), and Vegas (7). In his 990 games, Kessel has recorded 334 goals and 499 assists for a combined 833 points.
Kessel’s Streak Broken Down:
- 990 consecutive games played (started Nov. 3, 2009)
- 22,051 shifts by Kessel during his streak (22.3 per game)
- 471 combined wins by Kessel’s teams during streak
- 9% of current NHL players remain active who were in the league when the streak began
First Things First
Vegas has outscored opponents 11-2 in the first period and leads the NHL in first-period goals. The Golden Knights have scored first in six of eight games. Goaltending has been especially sharp early: Adin Hill has a .917 save percentage in the first period (24 shots), while Logan Thompson has a .959 (49 shots).
Back-to-Back
Vegas swept their first back-to-back of the season on Monday and Tuesday, the first of only six sets of games on consecutive days for the Golden Knights in 2022-23. In the five previous years Vegas has had at least nine sets of back-to-backs (10 last year). Vegas has traditionally fared well when playing on the second of consecutive days; its 32-18-6 record in that scenario (.640) trails only Tampa Bay (.686) since the start of the 2017-18 season.
The Marchessault Man
Vegas forward Jonathan Marchessault leads the Golden Knights in goals after notching his fifth goal in the first six games on Saturday night against the Avalanche. Marchessault led Vegas with 66 points (30G, 36A) in 76 games last season, including four multigoal games. Marchessault was the only member of the Golden Knights to hit the 30-goal mark during the 2021-22 campaign. Marchessault also led in shots (251) and was second in assists (36), power-play goals (5), and game-winning goals (5). Through his sixth season as a Golden Knight, Marchessault has appeared in 364 total games and has recorded 298 points (127G, 171A) with Vegas, both franchise highs. Marchessault is just two points away from becoming the first ever Vegas player to reach 300 total points with the club. He is currently tied Jack Eichel (7PTS, 3G, 4A) and Chandler Stephenson (7PTS, 3G, 4A) for most points on the team this season.
Frenemies
Adin Hill remains unbeaten in net for the Golden Knights after Vegas’ victory over Hill’s old club, the San Jose Sharks. Hill stopped 29 of 31 shots on the night, posting a .935 save percentage. Hill improves to 3-0-0, with an overall save percentage of .935 and 2.00 goals-allowed average for the season.
Rough and Tough Defense
Vegas recorded a season high of 29 blocked shots in Monday’s victory over Toronto and recorded an additional 27 the following night in San Jose. Golden Knights defenseman Alec Martinez leads the NHL with 36 blocked shots in the first eight games of the season. Additionally, Martinez has led the team in blocked shots in six of the last eight games. Most recently, Martinez recorded a season high of eight blocked shots against the Toronto Maple Leafs, one shy of his career high and the franchise record, which he shares with
Deryk Engelland.
The Golden Knights had a season high of 41 hits against the Colorado Avalanche on October 22. Vegas forward, Keegan Kolesar, was the leader in hits that night and has led the Golden Knights in hits in four of the eight first games of the 2022-23 campaign. Kolesar recorded the highest number of hits in a single game by a Golden Knight in Monday’s victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs with seven hits on the evening. Kolesar leads Vegas and currently ranks seventh in the league with total hits on the season with 28 total.
Quick Six
Vegas and Boston are the first teams in the league to reach six wins on the season, as both teams sit in the number one spots of their divisions.
Aye-Aye Captain!
Captain Mark Stone notched his second goal of the season and his second game-winning goal of the 2022-23 campaign in a 4-2 victory at San Jose. Stone has continued to play a pivotal role in Vegas’ success, recording 6 points in eight games (2G, 4A). Stone had two assists in Vegas’ loss to Colorado, his first to Jonathan Marchessault which marked the 300th of his career. Stone’s six points also include his goal that sealed Vegas’ season opening victory against Los Angeles with just 26 seconds remaining in regulation. Stone’s goal on Tuesday marked the 181st of his career and his 34th game-winning NHL goal. Stone has a history of a strong offensive presence for the Golden Knights; in his first two full seasons in Vegas, Stone posted consecutive 20-goal seasons. Last season despite only appearing in 37 games due to injury, Stone was able to record 30 points. Stone has skated in 179 games for the Golden Knights, owning 57 goals and 111 assists good for 168 total points. Stone was named the first captain in franchise history entering the 2020-21 season.
Making the Minutes Count
Alex Pietrangelo has consistently been the leader in time-on-ice for the Golden Knights so far this season. The defenseman averages 23:40 minutes of ice time per game and ranks fifth in the league with a combined total time of 189 minutes in eight games. During his time on the ice, Pietrangelo leads the Golden Knights in assists with five total. During each of the games that Pietrangelo has recorded a point in, the Golden Knights have won. Additionally, Pietrangelo is ranked fourth on the team in blocked shots and is in the top ten for hits. This is Pietrangelo’s third season with the club, skating in 129 games and recording 72 points (20G, 52A).
