RECENT HISTORY
The National League has won three consecutive World Series, tied with 2010-12, 1963-65 and 1907-09 for their 2nd-longest streak all-time behind 1979-82 (4)… the National League has won eight of 12 since 2010 and 10 of 16 since 2006.
• The National League has won 12 of 21 since 2001 on the heels of three straight World Series titles by the Yankees from 1998–2000…World Series have been split 12-12 since 1998 and 14-14 since 1993…however, over a longer span the American League has won the World Series 21 of 38 times since 1983.
• The American League holds the overall lead in the World Series, 66-51.
NO REPEAT
When the defending champion Atlanta Braves lost to the Phillies in the NLDS, it guaranteed that MLB would not have a repeat World Series Champion for the 22nd consecutive season…there has not been a repeat World Series champion since the Yankees won three straight from 1998–2000…not only is this the longest such streak in Major League history, it marks the longest of its kind in the history of the four major sports (MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL)…the previous record was 18 straight NBA seasons from 1969-70 through the end of the 1986-87 season.
• There have been eight different World Series champions in the last eight seasons: Braves in 2021, Dodgers in 2020, Nationals in 2019, Red Sox in 2018, Astros in 2017, Cubs in 2016, Royals in 2015 and Giants in 2014…there have been 15 different World Series champions in the last 21 seasons, the most variety in sports during that time…every Club has reached the Postseason since 2014.
• This Postseason, the Mariners clinched their first Postseason berth since 2001 and the Phillies clinched their first Postseason berth since 2011, ending each league’s longest Postseason drought…the Guardians made their fifth Postseason in the last seven years and did so as the 8th-youngest playoff team of all-time.
GAME 1 IMPLICATIONS
In World Series history, the Game 1 winner has gone on to win the Fall Classic 63.8 pct. (74 of 116) of the time…this does not account for Game 1 between the Cubs and Tigers in 1907, which ended in a 3-3 tie after 12 innings due to darkness…the Game 1 winner has won the last four World Series, 16 of 19 since 2003, 21 of 25 since 1997, 23 of 28 since 1993 and 28 of 34 since 1987…said another way, the Game 1 winner has gone on to win the World Series 82.4 pct. of the time since 1987, compared to 56.1 pct. (46 of 82) from 1903-86…since 1987, the only teams to lose Game 1 and win the World Series are the 2017 Astros, 2016 Cubs, 2009 Yankees, 2002 Angels, 1996 Yankees and 1992 Blue Jays.
• According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Game 1 winner of any best-of-7 Postseason series has gone on to win the series 64.7 pct. (121 of 187) of the time.
• The Astros are 0-4 all-time in Game 1 of the World Series, including 0-2 at home…they lost Game 1 in 2021 vs. Atlanta, 2019 vs. Washington, 2017 at Los Angeles-NL and 2005 at Chicago-AL…the Astros are 2-0 in Game 1s this Postseason, both at home, winning 8-7 over the Mariners and 4-2 over the Yankees.
• The Phillies are 5-2 all-time in Game 1 of the World Series, including 3-1 on the road…they won Game 1 in 2009 at New York-AL, 2008 at Tampa Bay, 1983 at Baltimore, 1980 vs. Kansas City and 1915 vs. Boston and lost Game 1 in 1993 at Toronto and 1950 vs. New York-AL…both of their titles have included a Game 1 win (2008, 1980)…they are 3-0 in Game 1s this Postseason, all on the road, winning 6-3 over the Cardinals, 7-6 over the Braves and 2-0 over the Padres.
FAMILIAR TERRITORY
The Astros advanced to the World Series for the fifth time in franchise history, following 2021 (loss), 2019 (loss), 2017 (win) and 2005 (loss)…they are the first team to appear in the World Series four times in a six-year span since the Yankees did so five times in a six-year span from 1998–2003…they also became the first team to win the AL pennant in back-to-back seasons since the 2014-15 Royals.
• The Astros are coming off a 4-game sweep in the ALCS, the fourth time in franchise history they swept a multi-game Postseason series and first time they swept a best-of-7 series…they became the 10th team (sixth AL team) to sweep a League Championship Series since it changed to a best-of-7 format in 1985, joining the 2019 Nationals, 2015 Mets, 2014 Royals, 2012 Tigers, 2007 Rockies, 2006 Tigers, 1995 Braves, 1990 Athletics and 1988 Athletics…two of the previous nine went on the win the World Series (2019 Nationals, 1995 Braves).
• The Astros are 7-0 this Postseason and are the fifth team to begin a Postseason with seven consecutive wins, following the 2014 Royals (8), 2020 Braves (7), 2007 Rockies (7) and 1976 Reds (7)…the 1976 Reds were the only team among the previous group to win the World Series…dating back to the end of the regular season, the Astros are 9-0 over a stretch of 24 days from Oct 4-27… their last loss came on Oct 3 vs. PHI when they faced starter Aaron Nola.
• The Astros appeared in their sixth consecutive League Championship Series, joining the 1991-99 Braves (8) as the only teams to make it six straight times.

ASTROS vs. PHILLIES
The two Clubs are meeting in the Postseason for the second time…they met in the 1980 NLCS, which ended with the Phillies advancing to the World Series after a “winner take all” Game 5…the only homer hit during the 1980 NLCS was off the bat of PHI Greg Luzinski in Game 1…the one combined homer remains the fewest in a series (min. 5 games) since the Postseason expanded to include League Championship Series in 1969…Games 2-5 all went to extra innings and it remains the only Postseason series in Major League history with four extra-inning games.
• The only series during the regular season was from Oct 3-5 in Houston…the Phillies won the opener to clinch a Wild Card berth and the Astros won the last two, taking a combined no-hit bid into the 9th in the middle game of the series.
•In the regular season the Astros went 106-56 and the Phillies went 87-75…according to Sarah Langs of MLB.com, the 19-win difference marks the 2ndlargest in World Series history behind the Cubs (116-36) and White Sox (93-58) in 1906…the White Sox went on to win that World Series in 6 games (4-2).
• For the third time since MLB began the six-division format in 1994, the Fall Classic is featuring teams from the AL West and NL East…all have occurred over a four-year span: 2022, 2021 (Braves/Astros) and 2019 (Nationals/Astros).
