Devin Smeltzer recalled from Triple-A St. Paul

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL, MN – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have placed right-handed pitcher Tyler Mahle on the 15-day Injured List with right shoulder inflammation (retroactive to August 18).

Mahle exited Wednesday afternoon’s start against the Royals in the third inning after experiencing right shoulder fatigue. He made three starts for the Twins since being acquired at the trade deadline from Cincinnati, going 1-0 with a 2.51 ERA (14.1 IP, 4 ER), four walks, 12 strikeouts and a 0.84 WHIP. The right-hander has gone 6-7 with a 4.17 ERA (118.2 IP, 55 ER), 43 walks, 126 strikeouts and a .224 opponent batting average in 22 starts between the Twins and Reds this season.

To replace Mahle on the 26-man roster, the Twins have recalled left-handed pitcher Devin Smeltzer from Triple-A St. Paul. Smeltzer will be making his third stint with the Twins this season (May 14-21 and May 25-July 17) and has gone 4-2 with a 4.02 ERA (62.2 IP, 28 ER), 17 walks and 37 strikeouts in 12 starts for Minnesota.
