MLS Preview: Real Salt Lake (9-8-7) at Seattle Sounders FC (10-12-2)

Real Salt Lake knocked the Sounders out of the playoffs on penalties after a scoreless draw in Seattle last season. That was only RSL’s second result at Seattle since the start of the 2013 season, having lost 11 of the previous 12 visits (incl. playoffs). RSL’s only win in Seattle in the last 10 years was a 1-0 victory in 2018.

The Sounders have lost six of their last nine MLS matches following a 2-1 defeat at Atlanta United on Saturday (W3). Seattle’s 32 points are tied for the second fewest they’ve ever had after 24 matches of a season (with 2015), only collected fewer at this stage in 2016 (30).

Real Salt Lake has won only one of its last eight games (D3 L4) following a run of five wins in seven games. RSL is winless in its last four away matches (D1 L3) and are yet to defeat a Western Conference opponent on the road in 2022 (D4 L4).

The Sounders were beaten in Atlanta by an Andrew Gutman goal from outside the box in the fourth minute of stoppage time on Saturday. The goal, scored at 93:32, was the second-latest match-winning goal Seattle has conceded in MLS after a goal at 93:42 by Justin Meram for the Crew in March 2014.

Real Salt Lake conceded in the ninth minute on Saturday against LAFC, the ninth goal it allowed in the first 15 minutes of matches this season, with only Montréal (10) letting in more. RSL has conceded a goal in the opening 15 minutes in five of its last seven matches, including the last three in a row.
