Real Salt Lake has lost only one of its 10 home MLS matches against Kansas City since Sporting joined the Western Conference in 2015 (W6 D3, including playoffs). Sporting won the first meeting between these sides this season, a 1-0 victory in Kansas City on March 26.
Real Salt Lake’s winless run extended to four matches (D2 L2) with a 2-1 defeat in Atlanta on Wednesday. RSL is yet to lose consecutive MLS matches this season, however, following up their first five losses this season with a win twice and a draw three times.
Sporting Kansas City has not been called for offside in any of its last three matches and against Minnesota on Wednesday drew the Loons offside eight times. It is the only match in MLS this season in which one team was not called offside and its opponent committed the offense at least eight times.
Johan Kappelhof scored his first career MLS goal in Real Salt Lake’s defeat at Atlanta on Wednesday. He did so in his 151st regular season appearance as only five players in league history have waited longer before scoring their first MLS goal.
In Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Minnesota, Johnny Russell entered a match as a substitute and scored his 47th MLS goal (regular season and playoffs). That ties Russell for the third-most goals in franchise history (regular season and playoffs) with Davy Arnaud, behind only Preki (79) and Dom Dwyer (59).
