Match Preview: Angel City FC vs. San Diego Wave FC

Banc of California Stadium | Los Angeles, California – Saturday, July 9 at 10:30 PM ET

Players to watch:

Midfielder Savannah McCaskill scored in the second minute of Angel City’s 1-1 draw with Portland and has scored each of the club’s last three goals. The three goals match her career high for a single season with her rookie campaign of 2018 with then-Sky Blue. Outside of McCaskill, only one player has managed to score more than a single goal so far this regular season—forward Christen Press, who has two on the year.

For San Diego, Christen Westphal and Marleen Schimmer had the assists on the Wave’s two goals against North Carolina and since May 15, 11 of the Wave’s 13 goals have been assisted (the other two were PKs). Westphal has two assists in that stretch, which matches her two total regular season assists from 2016-2021.

Match facts: Angel City FC is in action at Banc of California Stadium for the second straight week as they face San Diego Wave FC in a western showdown as the lone game on Saturday night.

Angel City ended a two-game goalless streak at home with a 1-1 draw to the Portland Thorns on Friday. The club has four goals in its six league home games this season, with only Gotham FC having fewer (one in four games played).

Meanwhile, San Diego is unbeaten in five games (W2 D3), its longest unbeaten run in its brief history in all competitions. The 10 goals scored during the five-game span are the most in that many games for the Wave so far.

San Diego went undefeated in two Challenge Cup games against Angel City (W1 D1), scoring five goals over the two matches. It tied the most goals scored against a single opponent over two Challenge Cup games, including OL Reign’s five goals in two matches against Angel City.
