MLS Preview: Columbus Crew SC (4-5-6) at Toronto FC (5-8-3)

Columbus has won its last two matches against Toronto, including a 2-1 victory in March, with both wins coming in Columbus. The Crew have won just one of their last eight matches against Toronto outside of Columbus (D1 L6, including playoffs) dating back to the start of the 2016 season.

Toronto FC’s 2-1 victory over Atlanta on Saturday was its second consecutive home win, and fifth home victory on the season. The Reds last eight MLS wins dating back to last September have all come at home, as have 26 of the 31 points they’ve collected in that span.

The Crew are unbeaten in three straight games (W1 D2) following a scoreless draw at Real Salt Lake on Saturday. Still, Columbus has recorded just two wins in its last 12 matches (D5 L5) after opening the season with two wins in its first three games (D1).

Despite the victory on Saturday, Toronto conceded yet again to Atlanta United, making it 24 straight, and 45 out of the last 46 MLS games without a clean sheet, a streak that started after a 2-0 win over the Crew in May 2021. In fact, that win is the only clean sheet victory the Reds have kept since the start of last season.

The Crew’s scoreless draw at Salt Lake on Saturday was the seventh time they’ve failed to score in their last 11 MLS matches. Only the Fire (8) have been shut out more often than Columbus (7) this MLS season.
