MLS Preview: Sporting Kansas City (3-9-4) at Nashville SC (6-4-5)

This will be Sporting Kansas City’s first trip to Nashville in MLS play. The first two meetings between the sides ended 2-1, with each team winning once, in Kansas City, including a victory for Nashville on April 9.

Nashville SC extended its home unbeaten run to 24 games (incl. playoffs) with a scoreless draw against San Jose on Saturday. There have been only four longer home unbeaten runs in MLS history, including a 25-match run by the Crew in 2008-09 that Nashville can equal in this match.

Sporting Kansas City suffered its ninth loss of the season on Sunday, falling, 2-1, at home to New England. Sporting has only had more losses after 16 games of a season once (12 in 1999) as that 1999 season is also the only time Kansas City has had fewer points (10) after 16 games than they do in 2022 (13).

Nashville had scored in 19 consecutive home matches before its scoreless draw with San Jose on Saturday. It was the longest active home scoring streak in MLS as Nashville has never been shut out in consecutive home matches in the club’s MLS history.

Johnny Russell scored Sporting’s lone goal against New England on Sunday on a direct free kick. It was Russell’s fifth direct free-kick goal since 2019, second-most in MLS in that time (Lucas Zelarayán – 7).
