Red Sox announce roster moves

BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today announced the following roster moves:

  • Recalled right-handed pitcher Josh Winckowski from Triple-A Worcester.
  • Optioned right-handed pitcher Phillips Valdez to Worcester following last night’s game.
  • Placed infielder/outfielder Christian Arroyo on the COVID-19 Related Injured List.
  • Recalled outfielder Jarren Duran from Worcester.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Winckowski, 23, made his Major League debut for the Red Sox on May 28, starting Game 2 of the doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles and allowing four runs over 3.0 innings. Ranked by Baseball America as the Red Sox’ No. 12 prospect, the right-hander is 2-2 with a 3.38 ERA (16 ER/42.2 IP) and 0.96 WHIP over nine starts for Triple-A Worcester this season. Winckowski was named International League Pitcher of the Week for June 6-12 after throwing a seven-inning shutout in Game 2 of a doubleheader on June 8 at Buffalo.

Valdez, 30, pitched a scoreless ninth inning last night in Boston’s win against Oakland. The right-hander has posted a 5.40 ERA (8 ER/13.1 IP) in 11 appearances for the Red Sox this season, as well as a 1.17 ERA (1 ER/7.2 IP) in six outings for Worcester.

Arroyo, 27, was scratched from last night’s starting lineup due to illness. The right-handed hitter has played in 35 games for Boston this season, appearing in 16 games in right field, eight at shortstop, six at second base, two at first base, and one at third base.

Duran, 25, has played three games for Boston this season, hitting .308 (4-for-13) with two runs scored and one triple. The left-handed hitter is batting .305 (54-for-177) with a .910 OPS, 23 extra-base hits, 28 RBI, and 11 stolen bases in 43 games for Worcester this season.
