Astros sign top Draft pick Tyler Whitaker

HOUSTON, TX – The Houston Astros have signed 2021 top Draft pick OF Tyler Whitaker, Amateur Scouting Director Kris Gross announced today. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Whitaker was selected by Houston in the third round of the Draft.

 

Whitaker, a 2021 graduate of Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, NV, was named the 2020/2021 Gatorade Nevada High School Player of the Year. In 2021 at Bishop Gorman, Whitaker hit .508 with 5 home runs and 32 RBI in 18 games. Additionally, Whitaker (6-4, 190) was ranked 37th on MLB.com’s Top 100 Draft Prospect List and 60th on Baseball America’s Top 500 MLB Prospects List.

 

Over the last two days, the Astros officially signed three other drafted players in OF Joey Loperfido (7th round), SS Chad Stevens (11th) and IF Kobe Kato (13th). Since the conclusion of the 2021 Major League Draft, the Astros have signed a total of 21 players, 14 drafted players and seven non-drafted free agents. The MLB deadline to sign drafted players is August 1.
