LOS ANGELES – The Houston Dash extended their unbeaten run to six games this evening after they played Angel City FC to a scoreless draw at Banc of California Stadium. This was Houston’s first trip to Southern California and the first meeting with Angel City FC.
Dash goalkeeper Jane Campbell earned her fourth clean sheet of the season tonight and she finished with four saves against Angel City. Two of those saves came in the 69th minute after Angel City’s Jun Endo forced a save at the near post. The rebound fell to Christen Press inside the box, but her effort was immediately saved by Campbell to preserve the clean sheet. The Dash goalkeeper has only conceded two goals in her last six games and three goals the entire season.
Houston took charge in the opening half and led both clubs in shots with nine and finished with 13 crosses into the box. Midfielder Sophie Schmidt had a shot from a few yards out the 18-yard box in the 33rd minute, which forced Angel City’s goalkeeper to make the save at the near post.
One of Houston’s best opportunities of the game came in stoppage time at the end of the first half. Dash forward Nichelle Prince got on the end of a cross, but her header went out of play for the final play of the opening 45 minutes.
Dash midfielder Marisa Viggiano hit the woodwork in the 64th minute and the midfielder played a key role in keeping Angel City scoreless by winning eight of her eight duels this evening. The midfielder also finished with seven recoveries and seven tackles.
Forward Michaela Abam entered the game in the 73rd minute and created one chance in the final 15 minutes. The Houston native won the ball outside the box and found midfielder Shea Groom in space, but her effort bounced off the crossbar in the 80th minute.
