MLS Preview: Real Salt Lake (7-3-4) at Vancouver Whitecaps FC (4-7-2)

None of the last 17 meetings between the Whitecaps and Real Salt Lake have ended in a draw (Vancouver W10, Real Salt Lake W7) dating back to September 2014. There has only been one draw in 12 all-time meetings in Vancouver, with the Whitecaps winning nine of the other 11 games (L2).

Vancouver has suffered only two defeats in 15 home matches since returning to BC Place last August (W10 D3), both to Portland. The Whitecaps won their last home match, 2-1, against Dallas, but haven’t recorded consecutive home wins since a four-game run last September-October.

Real Salt Lake’s 3-0 win over Houston on Saturday was its third straight win and fourth in the last five. RSL hasn’t had a winning streak longer than three games since a four-game run in June 2013.

Lucas Cavallini scored the lone goal of the match from the penalty spot in Vancouver’s victory over Sporting Kansas City on Saturday, the fourth penalty the Whitecaps have won this year, tied for most in MLS. Vancouver has converted 10 of its last 11 penalties dating back to September 2020 (incl. playoffs) following a run where it had missed three of its previous four.

Maikel Chang set up Real Salt Lake’s first goal against Houston on Saturday, his third straight game with an assist. Only two players in RSL history have recorded an assist in four straight MLS matches: Albert Rusnák in 2021 and Javier Morales in 2008.
