MLS Preview: Portland Timbers (3-5-6) Inter Miami FC (4-6-3)

The only previous MLS meeting between Miami and Portland was a 1-0 home win for the Timbers in October 2021. Portland has lost both of its previous league matches in Florida, conceding seven combined goals at Orlando in 2016 and 2018, but did win the MLS is Back Tournament staged in Florida in 2020.

Inter Miami is unbeaten in four straight home matches (W3 D1) after a 2-0 win over the Red Bulls on Sunday. Miami has had only one longer home unbeaten run in its MLS history, going six straight without a loss at DRV PNK Stadium in July-September 2021.

Portland’s 2-0 loss to the Union on Sunday was its second straight defeat and third loss in the last five matches (W1 D1). The Timbers sit on 15 points, the fewest through 14 games of a season in the club’s MLS history.

Ariel Lassiter scored Miami’s opening goal in its 2-0 win over the Red Bulls on Sunday, his fifth career MLS goal. It was Lassiter’s first goal as a starter (25th start) as his first four goals were all scored as a substitute.

Portland has struggled in the first half of games this season, scoring just four times before halftime, tied for second fewest in MLS (Vancouver – 3). Sixteen of Portland’s 20 goals this season (80%) have been scored after halftime, the highest percentage in the league in 2022.
