MLS Preview: New York Red Bulls (5-2-3) at Philadelphia Union (5-1-4)

The Union are unbeaten in seven straight matches against the Red Bulls (W5 D2, incl. playoffs), the longest unbeaten run by either team in the history of the series. Philadelphia has won each of the last five meetings between the teams in Chester (incl. playoffs), with the last three ending in 1-0 victories.

The Union have lost only two of their 23 home matches over the last 12 months (W15 D6, incl. playoffs), falling to Supporters’ Shield winners New England in September and MLS Cup winners New York City FC in the Eastern Conference Final in December. The Union have allowed a total of 11 goals in those 23 games, letting in more than one goal only once, in the 2-1 defeat to NYCFC in last year’s playoffs.

The Red Bulls have won their first five away matches this season, becoming the third team in MLS history to do so (Galaxy in 1998 and 1996, including breakaway shootouts). New York can become the first team in league history to win six straight road games to open a season and the first team since San Jose in 2005 to win six straight away regular season games overall.

Julian Carranza has been involved in seven goals in nine games with the Union (4 goals, 3 assists), more than twice as many has he had in 42 appearances over two seasons in Miami (3 goals).

The Red Bulls held 50.5 percent possession in their draw with Portland on Saturday, just the third time they’ve won the possession battle this season. The Red Bulls have won all four of the matches in which they’ve held under 40.0 percent possession and just one of the six in which they’ve held more (D3 L2).
