RHP Jorge Juan designated for assignment
OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s reinstated outfielder Ramón Laureano from the restricted list and placed outfielder Stephen Piscotty on the 10-day injured list with left calf tightness, retroactive to May 7, the club announced today. To clear space on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Jorge Juan was designated for assignment.
Laureano was suspended for 80 games on Aug. 6, 2021 for violating Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. He served 53 games last season and missed the first 27 games this year. In a 10-game rehab assignment with Las Vegas, Laureano went 5-for-37 (.135) with two doubles, two RBI, two stolen bases, and five walks. The 27-year-old outfielder played in seven Spring Training games and went 3-for-18 (.167) with a double and four RBI. In his four-year career, Laureano is batting .263 (293-for-1114) with a .335 on-base percentage and a .465 slugging percentage in 313 career games, all with the A’s.
Piscotty exited in the second inning of Friday’s game after a slide into home plate. He was batting .225 (9-for-40) with one double and one home run in 14 games this season. He was placed on the Covid-19 IL on April 15 and went 5-for-26 (.192) in nine starts in right field after being reinstated on April 23. The 31-year-old outfielder is a career .258 hitter (628-for-2431) and is batting .249 (318-for-1275) in five seasons with the A’s.
Juan was placed on the minor league 7-day injured list on April 8 and has not pitched this season. He entered spring training camp with the A’s before being optioned to High-A Lansing on March 20. The 6-foot-8 right-hander was originally added to the 40-man roster on Nov. 19, 2021. Juan was signed by the A’s out of the Dominican Republic on June 17, 2017, is 2-13 with a 4.88 ERA in 36 appearances, including 18 starts, in three seasons in the A’s farm system.
