INF Smith Placed on 10-day IL; LHP Logue Returned to Las Vegas
OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s reinstated left-handed pitcher A.J. Puk from the Covid-19 injured list and selected outfielder Mickey McDonald from Triple-A Las Vegas, the club announced today. To clear space on the roster, the A’s placed infielder Kevin Smith on the 10-day injured list retroactive to April 19 with a bruised bone in his left ankle and returned left-handed pitcher Zach Logue to Las Vegas.
Puk was on the A’s Opening Day roster and logged a 2.25 ERA and .200 opponents batting average in three relief appearances before he was placed on the restricted list Friday and transferred to the Covid-19 IL on Monday. He posted a 6.52 ERA and allowed a .278 opponents batting average in six appearances this spring.
McDonald was batting .222 with a home run, three RBI and three stolen bases in 10 games with Las Vegas. He was a non-roster invitee with the A’s this spring and went 5-for-6 (.833) with a RBI in four games. The 26-year-old left-handed hitter split last year between Double-A Midland and Las Vegas and batted a combined .305 with two home runs and 38 RBI in 106 games. He added 51 walks and was hit by a pitch 10 times for a .402 on-base percentage. A graduate of Serra High School in San Mateo, McDonald was the A’s 18th round selection in the 2017 First-Year Player Draft and is a .267 career hitter with seven home runs, 112 RBI and 68 stolen bases in 372 games in five seasons in the A’s farm system.
Smith was on the A’s Opening day roster and is batting .161 in 11 games. He is 5-for-15 (.333) over his last five games after going 0-for-16 over his first six contests.
Logue was added to the A’s roster as a substitute player last Friday and made his Major League debut last night against Baltimore. He recorded his first big league win after allowing a hit and a walk while striking out one in 1.1 scoreless innings.
