NHL Morning Skate – Jan. 22, 2022

Sidney Crosby recorded his 35th career game with at least four points and climbed past two Hockey Hall of Fame members on the NHL’s all-time points list.

Tony DeAngelo recorded a franchise-first as the Hurricanes scored at least six goals for the second time in as many games and reclaimed top spot in the Metropolitan Division.

Colton Parayko now stands alone in Blues history, becoming the first defenseman to score a penalty-shot goal.

CROSBY COLLECTS HAT TRICK, FOUR POINTS TO CLIMB NHL’S ALL-TIME LIST
Penguins captain Sidney Crosby scored a hat trick and had an assist to reach 1,356 points in his NHL career (496-860—1,356 in 1,067 GP). He leapfrogged Guy Lafleur (560-793—1,353 in 1,126 GP) and Brendan Shanahan (656-698—1,354 in 1,524 GP) for sole possession of 27th place on the League’s all-time list.

DeANGELO’S 30 IN 30 GUIDES HURRICANES PAST RANGERS

After a seven-goal performance in their last outing, the Hurricanes (27-8-2, 56 points) scored six times Friday to outlast the Rangers (26-11-4, 56 points) and overtake first place in the Metropolitan Division standings. Carolina is currently averaging 3.57 goals per game, the highest single-season total in team history and the highest since the Whalers produced 3.74 goals per game in 1988-89.

* Tony DeAngelo (1-2—3), who also had 0-3—3 on Jan. 18 at Boston, factored on three of six goals to boost his 2021-22 totals to 7-24—31 (30 GP) and became the first defenseman in Hurricanes/Whalers history to record 30 points through his first 30 contests with the franchise. He also became the first defenseman in franchise history to record consecutive three-point games.

Sebastian Aho (162-200—362 in 400 GP) notched 1-2—3 and scored the game-winning goal while skating in his 400th career game. Among players to debut with the Hurricanes/Whalers, Aho required the second-fewest contests to collect 200 assists with the franchise behind only Ron Francis (263 GP).

AVALANCHE EYE 15TH CONSECUTIVE HOME WIN. . .
The Avalanche (27-8-3, 57 points) eye elite company Saturday with their sights set on becoming the eighth team in NHL history to win at least 15 straight home games in a single season and first since the Capitals in 2016-17. The Bruins account for four of the previous seven occurrences.

Mikko Rantanen (21-27—48 in 35 GP) leads all Avalanche players in points during their current run at Ball Arena, posting 11-16—27 (14 GP), and sits two points shy of joining Nazem Kadri (15-36—51 in 35 GP) as the second Colorado skater to reach the 50-point mark this season.

. . . WHILE OVECHKIN SITS WITHIN STRIKING DISTANCE OF LEMIEUX

Alex Ovechkin (27-29—56 in 41 GP), the NHL’s leading point getter in 2021-22, returns home to Capital One Arena where he has found the back of the net in each of his last two outings. Ovechkin, who sits fourth on the all-time goals list and occupies the second-most road goals in NHL history, has scored 374 times on home ice in his career and sits within one of tying Mario Lemieux (375 in 472 GP) for 10th place on the League’s all-time list

MATTHEWS CLOSING IN ON ANOTHER FRANCHISE MARK

After falling short of tying the longest road goal streak in NHL history, Auston Matthews and the Maple Leafs (24-10-3, 51 points) take to the ice against the Islanders (14-13-6, 34 points) at UBS Arena. The Toronto forward has collected 12-4—16 in his last 11 contests as the visitor and can match franchise icon Doug Gilmour (12 GP in 1993-94) for the longest road point streak in Maple Leafs history should he find the score sheet once again.
