Giants agree to two-year contract with LHP Alex Wood

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Giants and left-handed pitcher Alex Wood have agreed to terms on a two-year Major League contract worth $25 million. Wood will make $12.5 million in both 2022 and 2023. He will also make a $62,500 annual donation to the Giants Community Fund in each of the two seasons.

Wood can make an additional $2.5 million in performance bonuses in each of the next two seasons for games pitched in which he records nine outs or greater: $250,000 each for 20 and 22 and $500,000 each for 24, 26, 28 and 30.

Wood, 30, went 10-4 with a 3.83 ERA (59er, 138.2ip) and 152 strikeouts in 26 starts in 2021, his first season with the Giants. It was the fourth time in his career (and first time since 2017) that he reached double-digit wins and his 3.83 ERA was his lowest since 2018. His 152 strikeouts were the second-most of his career behind 170 strikeouts in 2014 with Atlanta. The Giants were 19-7 in Wood’s 26 regular season starts this past season and were 14-3 as a team over his final 17 starts of the season.

The Charlotte, NC native posted a 9.9 strikeouts per 9.0 innings rate, his highest over a full season in his career, while also posting a 1.183 WHIP, the third lowest of his career and lowest since a career best 1.057 WHIP in 2017. His 50.8 groundball percentage was eighth-best among NL starters (min. 25 starts).

In his lone postseason start, Wood fired 4.2 scoreless innings in Game 3 of the NLDS at Los Angeles in SF’s 1-0 win.

Over nine Major League seasons with Atlanta (2013-2015), Los Angeles-NL (2015-2018, 2020), Cincinnati (2019) and San Francisco (2021), Wood is 63-48 with a 3.50 ERA in 214 career games (164 starts) with 935 strikeouts in 990.1 innings. In his 164 career starts, Wood owns a 3.54 ERA (367er, 932.2ip) while his ERA in his 50 relief outings is 2.81 (18er, 57.2ip).
