Winnipeg – The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announced on Thursday that they have extended veteran kicker Sergio Castillo through the 2025 season.

Castillo (5’9″, 197 pounds) remains with the team after serving as their placekicker since 2023. Originally scheduled to become a free agent in February 2025, Castillo’s extension ensures his continued presence in Winnipeg.

The 34-year-old is in his third stint with the Blue Bombers, having started his CFL career with the team in 2015, returned via trade in 2021, and rejoined as a free agent in 2023 after a stint in Edmonton in 2022.

Castillo was named the Blue Bombers’ Most Outstanding Special Teams Player for the second consecutive season in 2024. He connected on 79.7 percent of his field goals (51-64) and made 38 of 39 extra points. His 51 successful field goals, the third-highest in Blue Bombers history, came from an average distance of 37.1 yards and an average attempt from 39.2 yards, both league highs.

Additionally, Castillo set a new CFL record with 11 field goals of 50 yards or more, including two makes from 60 yards, breaking the previous team record of 58 yards, first set by Bernie Ruoff in 1975 and tied by Justin Medlock in 2016.

The 2025 season will mark Castillo’s continued contributions to the Blue Bombers’ success as he remains a key player on their special teams unit.
