The Virginia Lottery has published its report detailing casino gaming activity for January 2025. The state boasts three operational casinos: Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Bristol, Rivers Casino Portsmouth, and Caesars Virginia.

In January, these casinos generated a total of $72.3 million in gaming revenues. According to Virginia law, a graduated tax is applied to a casino’s Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR), defined as wagers minus winnings. As a result, $13.0 million was collected in taxes and contributed to the Gaming Proceeds Fund.

The law dictates that the state tax on casino AGR is allocated to several entities: the Problem Gambling Treatment and Support Fund, the Family and Children’s Trust Fund, and the host city. Specifically, for the Bristol casino, the statute directs the portion of taxes meant for the host city to the Regional Improvement Commission.
