The Swedish government has advanced a new ban on gambling with credit, proposing stricter regulations aimed at fostering a safer and more sustainable gambling market. The initiative seeks to curb over-indebtedness and shield consumers from financial distress caused by credit-financed gambling.
Key Measures in the Proposal
Under the revised framework, licensees and gaming agents will be prohibited from facilitating or participating in credit-based gambling transactions. The expanded ban includes restrictions such as:
- Preventing players from entering credit agreements with third parties during game purchases, including blocking links to credit providers in online gaming platforms.
- Rejecting bets when aware that a player is using credit to finance gambling activities.
- Banning credit card payments when it is clearly identifiable at the time of transaction that the payment is credit-based, applicable both online and in physical stores.
Implementation Timeline
The new regulations are set to take effect on April 1, 2026.
This strengthened approach reflects Sweden’s commitment to consumer protection in the gambling sector while reinforcing responsible gaming practices.
