Veteran defensive lineman accepts full responsibility for wagering violations

TORONTO – The Canadian Football League (CFL) has officially reinstated free agent defensive lineman Shawn Lemon, effective immediately, subject to strict conditions. Any future breach of the CFL’s Match Manipulation Policy will result in a lifetime ban. Lemon is now eligible to sign with any CFL team.

“Maintaining the integrity of play on the field is paramount,” said CFL Commissioner Stewart Johnston. “Mr. Lemon’s suspension—the longest in league history—was both necessary and justified. He has acknowledged his actions, understands the detrimental impact of wagering on sports, and has since undergone re-education on CFL policies. He is now committed to helping others learn from his mistake.”

Lemon was indefinitely suspended on April 24, 2024, for wagering on CFL games during the 2021 season while playing for the Calgary Stampeders, including one contest in which he participated. His actions were in direct violation of the league’s longstanding policy. Following a formal appeal, an independent arbitrator upheld the original suspension.

Before returning to game action, Lemon must also serve a two-game suspension for violating the CFL and CFL Players’ Association’s joint drug policy, stemming from a positive test for Phentermine, a banned substance.

Suspended players are prohibited from participating in regular season and postseason games. Individual clubs retain discretion over their involvement in training camp, preseason games, practices, or team meetings.

As part of his reinstatement, Lemon must complete all mandatory league education—including the CFL Match Manipulation Policy module—and continue attending counselling sessions.
