San Diego Padres Acquire LHP Tanner Scott and RHP Bryan Hoeing From Miami Marlins

The San Diego Padres have acquired left-handed pitcher Tanner Scott and right-hander Bryan Hoeing from the Miami Marlins in exchange for right-handed pitchers Adam Mazur and Bryan Hoeing, left-hander Robby Snelling and infielder Jay Beshears, President of Baseball Operations and General Manager A.J. Preller announced today.

Scott, 30, has a 6-5 record with a 1.18 ERA (6 ER, 45.2 IP), 18 saves, one hold, and 53 strikeouts (10.45 SO/9.0 IP) in 44 appearances this season. Scott is scoreless across his last 17 appearances and 17.2 innings pitched since June 17, converting all 10 of his save opportunities while allowing just five hits for a .091/.206/.091 slash line over the stretch. Scott has limited opposing hitters to a .127 average this year, which is the lowest in MLB amongst qualified relievers. His 1.18 ERA is also the 2nd-lowest among qualified National League relievers and 4th in Major League Baseball, while his 18 saves tie for the 8th-most in the NL. Scott participated in his first-career MLB All-Star Game this season after being named to the National League squad.

In 355 career appearances, Scott has gone 28-23 with a 3.63 ERA (138 ER, 342.1 IP), 51 saves, and 455 strikeouts between the Baltimore Orioles (2017-21) and Marlins (2022-24). He was named as the NL Reliever of the Month for September/October of 2023, helping the Marlins secure a Wild Card berth and making his first-career postseason appearance (1.0 IP, SO). Scott was originally selected by the Orioles in the 6th round of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of Howard College (Texas).

In 16 games for the Marlins this season (2 GS), Hoeing has gone 1-2 with a 2.70 ERA (9 ER, 30.0 IP), 1.27 WHIP and 25 strikeouts to just nine walks. He has posted a 1.50 ERA (4 ER, 24.0 IP) as a reliever as opposed to a 7.50 ERA (5 ER, 6.0 IP) in his two starts, while 11 of his 16 total appearances have been scoreless. The 27-year-old was originally selected by the Marlins in the 7th round of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Louisville (Ky.).
