The Sam Houston women’s basketball team experienced their first loss of the season, falling 66-51 to Kansas at Phog Allen Fieldhouse on Monday.
The Bearkats (2-1) kept the Jayhawks (2-0) within an eight-point margin in the first quarter, thanks to a strong defensive effort that forced turnovers leading to eight points and held Kansas to 36 percent shooting.
In the third quarter, the Bearkats scored 21 points, nearly doubling their first-half total, to stay in the game. They also tightened their defense in the fourth quarter, holding Kansas scoreless for four and a half minutes and narrowing the gap to 10 points.
Deborah Ogayemi recorded her second double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Kaila Kelley led Sam Houston with 15 points, while Whitney Dunn added eight points, including the team’s only two 3-pointers of the game.
