The Pittsburgh Pirates today acquired right-handed pitcher Ron Marinaccio (pronounced “mair-uh-NAH-chee-oh”) from San Diego, in exchange for International Signing Bonus Pool considerations.
The 31-year-old Marinaccio, a native of Toms River, NJ, went 1-0 with a 4.79 ERA (47.0ip/25er) and 38 strikeouts across his 33 relief appearances with the Padres this season. He pitched more than 1.0 inning in 17 of his 33 appearances with San Diego, including at least 2.0 innings in 11 of those 33 appearances.
Marinaccio, who was originally selected by New York (AL) out of the University of Delaware in the 19th round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft, has gone a combined 7-5 with two saves, a 3.50 ERA (172.1ip/67er) and 187 strikeouts in 141 career games with New York (2022-24) and San Diego (2025-26).
He posted a 3.02 ERA (125.1ip/42er), 149 strikeouts and a .186 batting average against (81-for-436) in 108 appearances from 2022-25, making him one of only nine Major League pitchers with a sub-3.05 ERA, at least 145 strikeouts and a sub-.190 batting average against during that stretch.
Right-handed pitcher Dennis Santana has been designated for assignment to make room for Marinaccio on Pittsburgh’s active and 40-man rosters.
