The Pittsburgh Pirates have acquired right-handed pitcher Chase Shugart from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Matt McShane.

Chase Shugart, 28, was designated for assignment on January 15. He made six relief appearances for the Red Sox in 2024 over three separate stints, going 0-0 with one save, a 4.15 ERA (8.2 IP/4 ER), eight strikeouts, and holding opponents to a .242 batting average.

Shugart made his MLB debut on August 15 at Baltimore and did not allow a run in four of his six outings with the Red Sox, including each of his last three appearances.

The 5’10” right-hander was selected by Boston in the 12th round of the 2018 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Texas at Austin.

In 2024, he was named Boston’s Minor League Relief Pitcher of the Year after going 6-2 with one save, a 4.46 ERA (70.2 IP/35 ER), 80 strikeouts, and a .242 batting average against in 36 appearances (five starts) with Triple-A Worcester.
