Pittsburgh Pirates acquire infielder/outfielder Enmanuel Valdez from Boston Red Sox

The Pittsburgh Pirates have acquired infielder/outfielder Enmanuel Valdez from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Joe Vogatsky.

Valdez, 25, was part of Boston’s Opening Day roster in 2024. He made 65 appearances (56 starts) at second base, three appearances (one start) at third base, and one appearance in left field. In 76 games over four stints with the Red Sox in 2024, Valdez hit .214 (43-for-201) with 12 doubles, six home runs, 28 RBIs, and 23 runs scored. He also played in 50 games with Triple-A Worcester.

The left-handed hitter made his MLB debut with the Red Sox in 2023 after being rated as the organization’s No. 18 prospect by MLB Pipeline. Among American League rookies with at least 100 plate appearances, Valdez ranked 10th in batting average (.266), 13th in slugging percentage (.453), and 16th in OPS (.764) in 2023.

Valdez was originally signed by Houston as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2015. He was acquired by Boston along with outfielder Wilyer Abreu in a trade for catcher Christian Vázquez on August 1, 2022.

With this acquisition, the Pirates now have 37 players on their 40-man roster.
