The Pittsburgh Pirates today signed right-handed pitcher Mitch Keller to a five-year contract through the 2028 season.
Keller, who was selected by the Pirates in the second round of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft, becomes the third member of the current team to sign a long-term contract extension along with Ke’Bryan Hayes and Bryan Reynolds.
“This is a great day for the Pittsburgh Pirates. The intangibles that Mitch brings, in terms of head, heart, commitment, attitude and leadership really makes a huge impact not only on who we are now as a team but who we will be as we move forward,” said Pirates Chairman, Bob Nutting. “Having known Mitch for nearly 10 years, to watch him grow as a player and person has been a privilege.”
The 27-year-old Keller was selected to the All-Star Game for the first time in his big league career in 2023 while setting the club record for the most strikeouts (210) in a single season by a right-handed pitcher.
Keller, who was announced yesterday as the club’s Opening Day starter for the second straight year, was rated Pittsburgh’s No. 1 prospect for three straight seasons (2018-20) by Baseball America while also being recognized by the same publication as a top 100 prospect in the game from 2017-20.
“During this process Mitch expressed to me his strong desire to remain a Pirate,” added Nutting. “He spoke fondly of his memory of watching our playoff games and just how much he wants to be get back there again for our fans. This is another important step towards realizing that goal.”
