The Phillies have extended the contract of left-handed pitcher Matt Strahm through the 2025 season with a club/vesting option for 2026, President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski announced today.

In 2023, his first year in Philadelphia, Strahm, 32, worked as both a starter and a reliever for the club and went 9-5 with two saves and a 3.29 ERA (32 ER, 87.2 IP) over a career-high 56 appearances (10 starts). He posted a 30.8 percent strikeout rate (108 SO, 351 batters faced) last season which was his highest mark since 2016, and his 5.42 strikeout-to-walk ratio (65 SO, 12 BB) in relief ranked second among all National League relievers on the season.

Strahm made seven scoreless appearances (5.1 IP) for the Phillies in last year’s postseason and earned the save in the club’s National League Division Series-clinching win against the Atlanta Braves on Oct. 12.

Originally selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 21st round of the 2012 MLB Draft, Strahm was signed by the Phillies as a free agent on Dec. 9, 2022. Over his major league career, the West Fargo, N.D. native has appeared in 263 games (35 starts) for the Royals (2016-17), San Diego Padres (2018-21), Boston Red Sox (2022) and the Phillies, and has gone 26-33 with six saves, a 3.69 ERA (161 ER, 392.1 IP) and 433 strikeouts.
