Phillies claim Castillo from Yankees

The Phillies have claimed infielder Diego Castillo off waivers from the New York Yankees.

Phillies President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski made the announcement.

Castillo, 26, who was designated for assignment by the Yankees on Jan. 29, spent last season in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization and appeared in one major league game on July 31 against the San Francisco Giants. He spent the majority of 2023 with triple-A Reno where he slashed .313/.431/.410 (.840 OPS) with 33 doubles, one triple, three home runs, 72 RBI and 97 walks. Defensively, Castillo appeared at four different positions, including left field, second base, shortstop and third base.

A native of Barquisimeto, Venezuela, Castillo made 96 of his 97 career appearances in the major leagues with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2022, hitting .206/.251/.382, going 54-for-262 with 13 doubles, 11 home runs, 29 RBI, 14 walks and 28 runs scored.

Originally signed by the Yankees as an amateur free agent in 2014, for his minor league career, Castillo has posted a slash line of .276/.346/.373 (.719 OPS) with 421 runs scored, 134 doubles, 16 triples, 33 home runs, 313 RBI, 279 walks in 716 games between the Yankees, Pirates and Diamondbacks organizations.

With the transaction, the Phillies’ 40-man roster is at 40.
