The Phillies have claimed infielder Diego Castillo off waivers from the New York Yankees.

Phillies President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski made the announcement.

Castillo, 26, who was designated for assignment by the Yankees on Jan. 29, spent last season in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization and appeared in one major league game on July 31 against the San Francisco Giants. Defensively, Castillo appeared at four different positions, including left field, second base, shortstop and third base.

A native of Barquisimeto, Venezuela, Castillo made 96 of his 97 career appearances in the major leagues with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2022, hitting .206/.251/.382, going 54-for-262 with 13 doubles, 11 home runs, 29 RBI, 14 walks and 28 runs scored.
