Phillies announce roster moves

The Phillies made the following roster moves today:

  • Right-handed pitcher Kaleb Ort was claimed off waivers from the Miami Marlins. To make room for Ort on the 40-man roster, infielder Diego Castillo was designated for assignment.
  • Right-handed pitcher David Buchanan signed a minor league contract and will attend major league spring training as a non-roster invitee.
  • Right-handed pitcher Andrew Bellatti (DFA on 2/6) and outfielder Simón Muzziotti (DFA on 2/7) were both outrighted to Lehigh Valley (AAA) and will attend major league spring training as non-roster invitees.

Ort, 32, made his first Opening Day roster with the Boston Red Sox in 2023. In 34 appearances (2 starts) with the Red Sox and triple-A Worcester, he combined to go 2-4 with a 4.67 ERA (18 ER, 34.2 IP), 17 walks and 40 strikeouts. In his major league career, the Grand Rapids, Mich., native has pitched in 47 games (2 starts) over the course of three seasons with Boston (2021-23), going 2-4 with a 6.27 ERA (36 ER, 51.2 IP), 25 walks and 51 strikeouts.

Originally signed by the Arizona Diamondbacks as a non-drafted free agent in 2016, the 6-foot-4 righty has gone 15-9 with a 2.98 ERA (76 ER, 229.1 IP), 125 walks, 317 strikeouts and a 32.1 percent strikeout rate (987 batters faced) while holding opposing hitters to a .207 batting average (173-836) in 184 minor league games.

Buchanan, 34, was selected by the Phillies in the seventh round of the 2010 MLB Draft. From 2014-15, he made 35 starts for Philadelphia, posting a 5.01 ERA (107 ER, 192.1 IP) with 61 walks and 115 strikeouts. The Atlanta, Ga., native pitched for the Samsung Lions in the Korea Baseball Organization from 2020-23, combining to go 54-28 with a 3.02 ERA (235 ER, 699.2 IP) and 539 strikeouts compared to 191 walks in 113 starts.
