Philadelphia Phillies Place J. T. Realmuto on Injured List

The Phillies have placed catcher J.T. Realmuto on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to June 10) with right knee pain. To fill his spot on the 26-man roster, catcher Rafael Marchán was recalled from triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Realmuto is scheduled to undergo right knee meniscectomy surgery tomorrow in Philadelphia.

Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.

Realmuto, 33, has slashed .261/.309/.411 with a .720 OPS over his 51 games for the Phillies this season. Entering play today, his seven home runs are tied for the most among all National League catchers and he ranks third in runs scored (28) and fourth in extra-base hits (16). Defensively, Realmuto’s 2.84 catcher’s ERA is first among all NL backstops. Earlier this season, Realmuto posted a career-high 17-game hitting streak, which was the longest for a Phillie who primarily played catcher since at least 1900.

Realmuto was originally selected by the Florida Marlins in the third round of the 2010 MLB Draft. He was traded by the Marlins to the Phillies on Feb. 7, 2019 and signed a five-year contract extension with the club taking him through the 2025 season on Jan. 29, 2021.

Marchán, 25, has had one major league stint with the Phillies this season after being added as the 27th player for the London Series against the New York Mets on June 8-9, but did not appear in either game. He began the season on the 10-day injured list with lower back pain before being reinstated and optioned to Lehigh Valley on May 27. In 13 combined games between the IronPigs and single-A Clearwater, including eight rehab appearances, Marchán slashed .233/.382/.395 with one double, two home runs, eight RBI, 10 walks and four runs scored. He made 10 starts at catcher and three as designated hitter.

A native of San Cristóbal, Venezuela, Marchán was signed by the Phillies as an amateur free agent on July 2, 2015.
