Philadelphia Phillies finalize four roster moves

The Phillies announced the following roster moves:

  • Right-handed pitcher Devin Sweet was acquired from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for cash considerations and selected to the 40-man roster
  • Right-handed pitcher John McMillon was claimed off waivers from the Miami Marlins
  • Right-handed pitcher Alan Rangel was selected to the 40-man roster
  • Right-handed pitchers Yunior Marte, Luis Ortiz and Freddy Tarnok, left-handed pitcher Kolby Allard and infielder Rodolfo Castro have cleared waivers, been outrighted and are free agents

The 28-year-old Sweet went 9-6 with a 3.91 ERA (33 ER, 76.0 IP), 111 strikeouts to 38 walks in 52 games (4 starts) for triple-A Toledo in the Tigers organization last season. Sweet averaged 13.1 SO/9.0 IP in 2024, which ranked third in the International League (min. 50 IP), and his 111 strikeouts led all Tigers minor league pitchers. The right-hander pitched in seven major league games for the Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics in 2023 and went 1-0 with a 10.38 ERA (10 ER, 8.2 IP).

Sweet, a native of Greensboro, N.C., was originally signed by the Mariners as a free agent on July 13, 2018.

McMillon made 14 appearances over the last two seasons with the Kansas City Royals and Marlins, combining for a 1.69 ERA (3 ER, 16.0 IP) with 21 strikeouts to five walks and a 0.81 WHIP. In 10 relief appearances with the Marlins last season, he went 2-1 with a 1.50 ERA (2 ER, 12.0 IP), 13 strikeouts, a 1.00 WHIP and limited opponents to a .171 batting average (7-41). The 26-year-old has made 105 appearances (1 start) in four minor league seasons, going 13-8 with a 4.75 ERA (69 ER, 130.2 IP).

The Lufkin, Texas, native originally signed as a free agent with the Royals on June 23, 2020. McMillon was selected in the 21st round of the 2016 MLB Draft by the Tampa Bay Rays and again by the Detroit Tigers in the 11th round of the 2019 MLB Draft but did not sign with either team.

Rangel, 27, has pitched in 187 games (155 starts) across his nine seasons in the minor leagues and has a 4.44 ERA (398 ER, 806.2 IP) with a 39-56 record and 826 strikeouts to 253 walks. He began last season in the Los Angeles Angels system but signed a minor league contract with the Phillies on July 16, 2024. In his 11 appearances (6 starts) between triple-A Lehigh Valley and single-A Clearwater, Rangel recorded a 4.02 ERA (14 ER, 31.1 IP) with 29 strikeouts to eight walks. He is currently pitching for Naranjeros de Hermosillo in the Mexican Pacific League where he has gone 1-2 with a 2.61 ERA (6 ER, 20.2 IP) and 14 strikeouts in four starts.

The Hermosillo, Mexico, native originally signed with the Atlanta Braves as an amateur free agent on July 2, 2014, and pitched in their system for eight seasons. In 2023, he led Braves minor league pitchers in strikeouts (140), tied for the second-most innings pitched (127.0) and starts (25) and was tied for the fifth-best opponent’s batting average (.237).
