The Phillies have claimed right-handed pitcher Kyle Tyler off waivers from the Miami Marlins and optioned him to triple-A Lehigh Valley. To make room for Tyler on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Nick Nelson was designated for assignment.
Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.
Tyler, 27, has gone 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA (19 ER, 31.2 IP) with 25 strikeouts in eight games (seven starts) over his three stints with the Marlins this season. He began the year with triple-A Jacksonville in Miami’s minor league system, where he was 4-2 with a 3.06 ERA (17 ER, 50.0 IP) with 44 strikeouts in 11 games (nine starts).
A native of Oklahoma City, Tyler was originally selected by the Los Angeles Angels in the 20th round of the 2018 MLB Draft out of the University of Oklahoma.
Nelson, 28, had a 5.40 ERA (2 ER, 3.1 IP) in three relief appearances for the Phillies this season. For his major league career, Nelson is 5-4 with one save and a 5.21 ERA (65 ER, 112.1 IP) in 73 games (four starts) for the New York Yankees (2020-21) and Phillies (2022-24).
He was acquired by the Phillies in a trade with the Yankees on Nov. 19, 2021.
