The Philadelphia Phillies have bolstered their roster by acquiring left-handed starter Jesús Luzardo and catcher Paul McIntosh from the Miami Marlins. In exchange, the Phillies are sending minor league outfielder Emaarion Boyd and infielder Starlyn Caba to Miami.
Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.

Jesús Luzardo, 27, has played in 105 games and made 89 starts over six seasons with the Oakland Athletics and Marlins. In the last season, he made 12 starts for Miami, posting a 5.00 ERA with 58 strikeouts over 66.2 innings. Despite this, in 10 of those starts, he managed a 3.28 ERA over 57.2 innings.
In 2023, Luzardo had a solid season, making 32 starts for the Marlins as they reached the postseason. He went 10-10 with a 3.58 ERA over 178.2 innings, with 208 strikeouts and a 30.0% strikeout rate, averaging 10.48 strikeouts per 9.0 innings.
From 2022-23, Luzardo made 50 starts with a 3.48 ERA over 279.0 innings, averaging 10.58 strikeouts per 9.0 innings. Among the 62 pitchers (including 15 left-handers) who made at least 50 starts in that period, Luzardo ranked sixth in strikeouts per 9.0 innings, trailing only notable pitchers like Spencer Strider, Blake Snell, Shohei Ohtani, Kevin Gausman, and Dylan Cease.
Originally from Lima, Peru, Luzardo was selected by the Washington Nationals in the third round of the 2016 MLB Draft.
Paul McIntosh, 27, played 117 games for double-A Pensacola last season, hitting .246/.340/.385 with a .725 OPS. He recorded 32 extra-base hits, including 12 home runs, and had a 10.4% walk rate. McIntosh made 116 starts, splitting his time between catcher, designated hitter, and left field.
Born in Atlanta, Georgia, McIntosh played collegiately at Motlow State Community College in Tennessee and West Virginia University. He was selected by the Nationals in the 34th round of the 2018 MLB Draft.
Starlyn Caba, 19, signed with the Phillies as an amateur free agent in January 2023. He played 116 minor league games across three levels for the Phillies from 2023-24.
Emaarion Boyd, 21, was selected by the Phillies in the 11th round of the 2022 MLB Draft out of South Panola High School in Mississippi. He appeared in 198 games across three levels from 2022-24.
To make room for Luzardo on the 40-man roster, the Phillies designated left-handed pitcher Tyler Gilbert for assignment.
