NHL Preview: Calgary Flames (1-1-1) at Buffalo Sabres (1-2-0)

OCTOBER 16, 2023 – CALGARY FLAMES [2] at WASHINGTON CAPITALS 3
The Calgary Flames continued a five-game road trip on Monday night with their one and only trip to Capital One Arena for a tilt with the Capitals. The Flames came out of the gates flying, dominating the opening 20 minutes by outshooting Washington 18-3 and getting goals from Adam Ruzicka and Dillon Dube to lead 2-0 through the opening frame. The Capitals would respond in the second with a pair of goals from Matthew Phillips and Connor McMicheal to tie the game at a pair each through 40 minutes of play. In the final frame, the goalies stood tall with all 18 shots the teams combined for being turned away by Markstrom and Kuemper to force overtime. The extra frame would solve nothing, and in the shootout Evgeny Kuznetsov would score the lone goal and the Capitals won 3-2.

This is the first of two meetings this season between the Flames and Sabres. The Flames and Sabres split the season-series in 2022-23, with the road team winning both matchups. LAST TRIP TO BUFFALO:
The last time the Flames traveled to Buffalo was in February of last season for a matinee game. Buffalo opened the scoring courtesy of Tage Thompson just under eight minutes into the first on the powerplay, followed by a Casey Mittelstadt goal to make it 2-0 Sabres through 20. The Flames offense exploded for four goals in the second, starting with Jakob Pelletier’s first NHL goal. Mikael Backlund scored just 20 seconds later, followed by Dennis Gilbert’s first goal as a Flame and Nazem Kadri to make it 4-2 Flames through 40. In the final frame, Dillon Dube got in on the offence, scoring and adding three helpers to collect four points for the first time in his career and the Flames put up a ‘touchdown’ the day before Super Bowl Sunday with a 7-2 win.

BACK-TO-BACKS:
The Flames get set for the first leg of their first back-to-back set of the 2023-24 season tonight in Buffalo before travelling to Columbus tomorrow. In 2022-23, the Flames were 2-6-2 in the first half of back-to-backs, but 6-2-2 in the second half. Calgary will play in back-to-back scenarios eight times this season with their next set coming November 10th in Toronto and November 11th in Ottawa.
