NHL Morning Skate: Face-Off Edition for September 30, 2026

* Evan Bouchard had a historic three-goal, five-point performance for the Oilers but Paul Cotter netted a pair of goals, including the overtime winner, as the Canucks continued their success in recent season openers with another high-scoring performance.

* All five contests to begin 2026-27 continued the League’s 2025-26 trend of close games (one-goal contests or two-plus with an empty-net goal) but the Panthers, Canadiens and Canucks each did so in one-goal wins. 

* Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon will open their season during an NHL on TNT doubleheader, while Gavin McKenna and Matthew Schaefer face off on Prime Wednesday Night Hockey in a battle between the past two first-overall picks.

CANUCKS ENDURE BOUCHARD’S FIVE-POINT PERFORMANCE EN ROUTE TO OVERTIME WIN
The Canucks built 1-0, 2-1 and 5-2 leads only to have Evan Bouchard (3-2—5) score a hat trick and register a historic five-point performance to help the Oilers erase a three-goal deficit in the third period, but Paul Cotter (2-0—2) played the role of overtime hero in his Canucks debut to lift Vancouver to victory.
 

* Cotter, who spent the past five seasons with the Golden Knights and Devils, bookended the contest by becoming the first player to score a shorthanded goal in their Canucks debut and the first to score an overtime goal in their opening game with the franchise.

* The Canucks are no strangers to offensive outbursts in season openers as of late and became the sixth franchise to score five or more goals in four consecutive season openers, alongside the Nordiques (9; 1980-81 – 1988-89), Canadiens (6; 1973-74 – 1978-79), Jets (4; 2013-14 – 2016-17), Devils (4; 1984-85 – 1987-88) and Blues (4; 1978-79 – 1981-82).

CLOSE GAMES DEFINE OPENING NIGHT
The Canucks, Golden Knights, Bruins, Panthers and Canadiens each collected victories in down-to-the-wire outings – including three one-goal games – as the puck dropped on the 2026-27 regular season and immediately continued the NHL’s trend of close games from 2025-26 (77%; highest in League history). Close games are defined by one-goal contests or two-plus with an empty-net goal.

* Jack Eichel (1-2—3) factored on three of five Golden Knights goals to eclipse 700-career points and help Vegas improve to 7-0-1 in their past eight season openers – the NHL’s longest active point streak in that scenario (next closest: DAL, 6-0-0). Tuesday was the third consecutive season opener in which he collected three or more points following 0-4—4 to begin 2024-25 and 1-3—4 to start 2025-26.

* Eichel became the third player in NHL history with three or more points in three consecutive season openers, alongside Mikko Rantanen (4 GP; 2022-23 – 2025-26) and Bobby Hull (3 GP; 1965-66 – 1967-68). Rantanen can extend his streak when the Stars open their season Friday against the Blues.
 

* Overtime was looming between the Bruins and Rangers but Boston forwards Fraser Minten, JJ Peterka –who wowed the TD Garden crowd in his first game with the franchise – and Mark Kastelic each scored in a 75-second span during the final four minutes of regulation to lift their club to an 11th straight win in a home opener – tied with Montreal (1953-54 – 1963-64) for the longest run in NHL history (ANA can also tie on Oct. 4).

* The reigning Stanley Cup champion Hurricanes opened the 2026-27 season by raising their second championship banner to the rafters at Lenovo Center prior to puck drop, but the 2023-24 and 2024-25 Stanley Cup champion Panthers spoiled the celebration after Gustav Forsling netted the game-winning goal with five seconds remaining in the extra frame – the latest overtime goal by a defenseman in franchise history.

* Jacob Markstrom (36 years, 241 days), beginning his second stint with Florida, became the fourth-oldest goaltender in NHL history to post a shutout in a season opener, following Detroit’s Hap Holmes (39 years, 267 days on Nov. 15, 1927), Edmonton’s Nikolai Khabibulin (37 years, 267 days on Oct. 7, 2010) and Toronto’s Ed Belfour (37 years, 172 days on Oct. 10, 2002).

* The latest instalment of the Maple Leafs-Canadiens rivalry watched William Nylander (2-0—2) open the scoring 48 seconds into the contest before Montreal tallied three straight goals to rally and capture their fourth consecutive victory against their longtime foes dating to Nov. 22, 2025 (TOR: 0-3-1). The club earned its first regulation win in Toronto since Feb. 13, 2021.

* Jakub Dobes (26 saves) spoiled the highly anticipated debuts of Gavin McKenna (15:19 TOI) and Kirill Marchenko (0-1—1) as he became the first Canadiens goaltender with a four-game win streak against the Maple Leafs since Carey Price posted a franchise-best 11-game run from March 22, 2014 to Feb. 25, 2017.

NOVA SCOTIAN STARS TAKE CENTER STAGE FOR NHL ON TNT DOUBLEHEADER

The first NHL on TNT doubleheader of the season features a pair of First Round rematches from the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs, with the NHL on TNT crew on-site as captain Sidney Crosby leads the Penguins into the Battle of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. The broadcast concludes with Nathan MacKinnon and the Avalanche clashing with the Kings at Ball Arena.

* Crosby (654-1,107—1,761 in 1,420 GP) returns to the League for his 22nd season and 20th as captain of the Penguins, making him the longest-tenured captain in NHL history, eclipsing Steve Yzerman with the Red Wings (19 seasons). Crosby, who recorded 29-45—74 (68 GP) last season, also enters 2026-27 just 38 points shy of moving into fifth place on the NHL’s all-time list.

* MacKinnon, the reigning “Rocket” Richard Trophy winner, begins his pursuit of a second consecutive 50-goal season as Colorado aims to improve upon its Presidents’ Trophy-winning campaign. MacKinnon can become the second player in Avalanche/Nordiques history to record consecutive 50-goal seasons and just the third active player, following Alex Ovechkin (2x: 3 from 2013-14 to 2015-16 & 2007-08 to 2009-10) and Leon Draisaitl (2 from 2021-22 to 2022-23).

PAST TWO NO. 1 PICKS FACE OFF ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT HOCKEY

The first Wednesday Night Hockey on Prime broadcast of the 2026-27 season features the past two No. 1 picks from the NHL Draft facing off for the first time as Matthew Schaefer and the Islanders take a trip to Scotiabank Arena to visit Gavin McKenna and the Maple Leafs.

* Schaefer, the 2025-26 Calder Trophy winner, is looking to follow up on his record-breaking rookie campaign which had the Islanders within striking distance of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Schaefer (23-36—59) needs two goals to overtake Bobby Orr (24) and Ray Bourque (23) for the second most by a teenage defenseman and needs 41 points to join Phil Housley (132) as just the second blueliner in League history with 100 or more points before turning 20.

* Although they will be opponents on Wednesday, Schaefer and McKenna have been friends since they met at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in 2023 and have since represented Canada as teammates three other times, most recently at the 2025 World Junior Championship.
