Venue: Lenovo Center, Raleigh, North Carolina
Puck drop: 6:45 p.m. ET
TV: ESPN+, MNMT (Caps), Hurricanes Hockey Network/CARNHL (Canes); radio includes 106.7 The Fan for Washington.
This is a Metropolitan Division rematch. The Capitals opened the season with a 5-2 road win over the defending Stanley Cup champion Hurricanes on October 2 at the same venue (Alex Tuch scored twice in his Caps debut). Carolina has since won five straight and leads the NHL with 11 points.

Recent Team Forms
Capitals (3-2-0): Opened with the 5-2 win at Carolina, lost 3-1 at Tampa Bay, then won home games vs. Pittsburgh (5-3) and Rangers (3-1) before falling 5-3 to Seattle on Sunday. They are 3-0-0 vs. Metropolitan foes and strong when scoring 3+ goals. Defense has been solid overall but missing key pieces; offense features contributions from Tuch, Wilson, Leonard, Chychrun, and the Protas brothers. They head into a back-to-back (home vs. Montreal Wednesday).
Hurricanes (5-1-1): Started 0-1-1 (OT loss to Florida, loss to Caps), then won five straight: OT win at Philly, wins at Montreal (6-4), vs. Vancouver (7-2), at Chicago (5-2), and at Philly (4-1). They lead the league in points and have been high-scoring (top in goals for early). Aho has been red-hot (multiple multi-point games), with support from Svechnikov, Blake, Stankoven, Jankowski, Carrier, and Hall. Strong special teams and possession metrics. Home record is mixed early (1-1-1), but road dominance has fueled the streak.
Series History
Capitals lead the 2026-27 season series 1-0 after the October 2 win. Recent history is competitive: Capitals took a regular-season win in Raleigh earlier this month and had success in some prior meetings, while Carolina dominated parts of the 2025 playoffs and other matchups. Overall last 10 meetings (including playoffs) have been relatively even, with Carolina holding slight edges in some stretches. Ovechkin’s final regular-season trip to Raleigh adds narrative weight.
Key Player vs. Player Matchups
Sebastian Aho / Andrei Svechnikov vs. Capitals top defense/pairs (Chychrun, Fehervary, etc.): Carolina’s top line has driven the winning streak; Washington must limit high-danger chances against Aho’s playmaking and Svechnikov’s net-front presence.
Alex Ovechkin / Alex Tuch / Tom Wilson vs. Slavin-Chatfield / Miller: Ovechkin (still a threat in his 22nd season) and the physical Tuch-Wilson duo will test Carolina’s shutdown pairs. Tuch already scored twice in the first meeting.
Goaltending: Logan Thompson vs. Pyotr Kochetkov: Thompson was excellent in the prior meeting (.939 SV%). Kochetkov has been sharp during the streak.
Secondary: Dylan Strome / Ryan Leonard / Jordan Kyrou creating vs. Carolina’s depth; Jackson Blake / Logan Stankoven / Taylor Hall generating speed against Washington’s depleted blue line. Special teams battles (both teams have shown PP competence early) will matter. Physicality from Wilson, Carrier, and others should feature.
Betting Trends
Carolina is riding a five-game win streak with strong offensive output and is the defending champs seeking revenge at home. Caps won the first meeting as underdogs and have been competitive, but injuries (especially Dubois and Roy) weaken them on the road in a back-to-back situation. Totals have gone over in several recent Canes games and the prior matchup (7 goals). Home underdogs or +1.5 have value in some Metro spots historically, but form strongly favors the hosts.
Carolina enters as the hotter, deeper team seeking payback, while Washington aims to spoil the party again with star power despite absences. Expect a competitive, physical Metropolitan clash.
