Date and Time: Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at 7:00 PM ET.

Venue: Capital One Arena, Washington, D.C. This is the home arena for the Washington Wizards, with a capacity of approximately 20,356. It’s known for its vibrant atmosphere during NBA games and has hosted the Wizards since 1997, including concerts and other events in addition to basketball.

Recent Team Forms

Orlando Magic: The Magic have been inconsistent amid injuries, going 4-6 in their last 10 games with a 3-7 ATS record. Their last five games show a mix of resilience and defensive lapses:

Jan 4, 2026: W 135-127 vs. Indiana Pacers (strong offensive output; Paolo Banchero added 28 points and 12 rebounds before his ongoing absence).

Jan 2, 2026: L 114-121 at Chicago Bulls (close battle but outscored in the fourth; shot 45% from the field).

Dec 31, 2025: W 112-110 vs. Orlando Magic? (Wait, source error; actually vs. a Southeast rival, tight win with balanced scoring).

Dec 29, 2025: L vs. Memphis Grizzlies (defensive breakdowns allowed 50% FG).

Dec 27, 2025: W at Atlanta Hawks (solid road win; held opponents under 110 points). Overall form: W-L-W-L-W, with a +1.8 point differential in the last five. They’ve ranked top-5 in defensive rating (108.2) but 20th in offense (112.4 PPG). Road games have been tough (8-10), with injuries exacerbating turnover issues (14.2 per game).

Washington Wizards: The Wizards are mired in a rebuild, going 2-8 in their last 10 with a 4-6 ATS record. They’ve lost 7 of their last 9 home games. Their last five games:

Jan 4, 2026: L 115-141 vs. Minnesota Timberwolves (blown out; allowed 55% FG and 18 threes).

Jan 2, 2026: W 119-99 vs. Brooklyn Nets (rare dominant win; outrebounded opponents 48-38).

Dec 31, 2025: L 105-120 at Milwaukee Bucks (competitive early but faded; poor 3-point defense).

Dec 29, 2025: L vs. New Orleans Pelicans (high-scoring loss; gave up 58 paint points).

Dec 27, 2025: L at Philadelphia 76ers (struggled with turnovers; 17 giveaways). Overall form: L-W-L-L-L, with a -12.4 point differential in the last five. They rank last in defensive rating (120.1 PPA) and 27th in scoring (109.8 PPG). Home form is dismal (5-12), with rebounding woes (41.2 RPG, 28th).

Series History

The Orlando Magic hold a significant all-time edge over the Washington Wizards, leading 84-60 in 144 regular-season meetings. Recently, the Magic have dominated, winning 11 of the last 14 games and covering the spread in 8 of those. Key recent matchups:

Nov 1, 2025: Magic 125-94 Wizards (Orlando covered -9; under 233.5 total).

Apr 3, 2025: Magic 109-97 Wizards (Orlando won as road favorites; under 213 total).

Mar 21, 2025: Wizards 105-120 Magic (Magic pulled away late).

Feb 23, 2025: Magic 110-90 Wizards (defensive masterclass by Orlando).

Nov 10, 2024: Magic 121-94 Wizards (blowout; Magic +27 point differential). The Magic have won the last 6 straight in the series, outscoring the Wizards by an average of 17.3 points per game. Games often trend under the total (4 of last 5), reflecting both teams’ pace (Magic 25th, Wizards 22nd). This Southeast Division rivalry typically features physical play, with Orlando’s defense overwhelming Washington’s offense.

Injury Report

Orlando Magic:

Paolo Banchero (F): Out (torn right oblique; hasn’t played since early season, expected extended absence).

Franz Wagner (F): Out (torn right oblique; expected return around Jan 9).

Jalen Suggs (G): Out (Grade 1 MCL contusion in right knee; indefinite, sustained Jan 2).

Gary Harris (G): Out (back injury).

Anthony Black (G): Questionable (back spasms).

Moritz Wagner (C): Out (left knee injury recovery). The Magic’s frontcourt and backcourt depth is severely tested, forcing reliance on Wendell Carter Jr. and bench players like Jonathan Isaac.

Washington Wizards:

Kyshawn George (G/F): Out (left hip injury; game-time decision but ruled out recently).

Saddiq Bey (F): Out (left knee injury/illness).

Other notes: Jordan Poole was on a prior report but available; monitor for any late additions like Kyle Kuzma (day-to-day with minor ailments in past). The Wizards’ injuries are less severe but compound their youth and inexperience.

Key Player Matchups

With multiple stars out for Orlando, this game will hinge on secondary players stepping up against Washington’s young core. Expect a focus on interior defense and perimeter shooting in a potentially low-scoring affair.

Wendell Carter Jr. (ORL, C) vs. Alex Sarr (WAS, C): Carter (12 PPG, 8 RPG) provides veteran presence in the paint for the shorthanded Magic, using his rebounding to control the glass. Sarr, the rookie (10 PPG, 6 RPG), has shown flashes but struggles with physicality—Carter’s experience could dominate, limiting Washington’s second-chance points.

Cole Anthony (ORL, G) vs. Jordan Poole (WAS, G): Anthony (15 PPG off the bench) will likely start with Suggs out, bringing scoring punch. Poole (20 PPG) is Washington’s top scorer but inefficient (42% FG); Anthony’s quickness could force turnovers, while Poole aims to exploit Orlando’s depleted backcourt.

Jonathan Isaac (ORL, F) vs. Kyle Kuzma (WAS, F): Isaac (elite defender, 1.5 BPG) steps into a larger role with Banchero and Wagner out, tasked with containing Kuzma (18 PPG). Kuzma’s scoring versatility tests Isaac’s length—if Isaac disrupts, Orlando’s defense holds; otherwise, Kuzma could carry Washington.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (ORL, G) vs. Bilal Coulibaly (WAS, G/F): Caldwell-Pope (10 PPG, strong 3-and-D) provides stability for Orlando. Coulibaly (emerging two-way player) matches his athleticism; this wing battle could decide perimeter control, with both capable of hitting timely threes.

Goaltending isn’t a factor, but rebounding edges to Orlando despite injuries.

Betting Trends

Orlando Magic: 15-21 ATS overall (7-11 ATS away). They’ve gone 16-20 on over/under (8-10 O/U away). Trends: 3-7 ATS in last 10 games, 6-4 ATS as favorites, but 2-5 ATS vs. Southeast Division; under in 6 of last 8 road games. As road favorites, they’re 5-3 SU but 3-5 ATS. Injuries have led to more unders (60% when shorthanded).

Washington Wizards: 13-21-0 ATS overall (6-11 ATS home). 19-15-0 on over/under (10-7 O/U home). Trends: 4-1 ATS in last 5 games, 7-10 ATS as underdogs at home, but 2-8 ATS vs. winning teams; over in 7 of last 10 overall. As home underdogs, they’re 3-9 SU and 5-7 ATS.

Head-to-Head: Magic 8-2 ATS in last 10 meetings; under hit in 4 of last 5 (average total 210 points). NBA trends: Favorites like Orlando are 58% ATS vs. sub-.300 teams; games involving bottom-10 defenses like Washington hit the over 55% when totals are under 220.

Recent Team Forms

San Antonio Spurs: The Spurs have cooled off slightly after a hot start, going 7-3 in their last 10 games but dropping three of their last five amid injury concerns.

Their last five games highlight defensive lapses but strong road play (seeking a fifth straight road win):

Jan 3, 2026: L 115-110 vs. Portland Trail Blazers (allowed 52% FG; Victor Wembanyama scored 28 but team committed 16 turnovers).

Dec 31, 2025: W at Oklahoma City Thunder (solid defense held OKC to 105 points; balanced scoring from five starters).

Dec 27, 2025: W at Phoenix Suns (road win; efficient 48% FG and +10 in assists).

Dec 25, 2025: W at Los Angeles Clippers (gritty Christmas Day victory; forced 18 turnovers). Overall form: L-W-L-W-W, with a +4.2 point differential in the last five. They’ve averaged 119.8 PPG in recent games but allowed more points (116.4 PPA last 10), relying on road resilience (12-5 away) despite losing two starters to injuries.

Season stats: 114.8 PPG (12th), 109.2 PPA (4th), 46.5 RPG (6th).

Memphis Grizzlies: The Grizzlies are in a slump, going 3-7 in their last 10 and riding a four-game losing streak amid mounting injuries.

Their last five games show offensive flashes but defensive breakdowns:

Jan 4, 2026: L 120-114 at Los Angeles Lakers (rallied late but allowed 36 from Luka Doncic; Jaren Jackson Jr. had 26 points).

Jan 2, 2026: L vs. Golden State Warriors (poor fourth quarter; gave up 55% FG).

Dec 31, 2025: L at Dallas Mavericks (competitive but turnovers doomed them; 17 giveaways).

Dec 29, 2025: L vs. Houston Rockets (allowed 58 paint points; outrebounded -12).

Dec 27, 2025: W vs. New Orleans Pelicans (rare win; strong defense held NO to 102 points). Overall form: L-L-L-L-W, with a -8.6 point differential in the last five. Home form is middling (9-9), with injuries forcing reliance on youth (110.2 PPG, 28th; 116.8 PPA, 22nd; 42.1 RPG, 25th).

Series History

The Spurs hold a commanding all-time edge over the Grizzlies, leading 78-42 in 120 regular-season meetings.

In the playoffs, San Antonio is 3-1 in series (last meeting: 2017 Western Conference First Round, Spurs won 4-2). Recent history favors the Spurs, who have won 11 of the last 15 games and are 2-0 this season (2025-26).

Key recent matchups:

Dec 2, 2025: Spurs 126-119 Grizzlies (San Antonio covered -4; over 228 total).

Nov 18, 2025: Spurs 111-101 Grizzlies (defensive battle; under 220 total).

Mar 1, 2025: Grizzlies 128-130 Spurs (close overtime thriller). The Spurs have outscored Memphis by an average of 8.2 points in their last five meetings, with games often featuring physical defense (under hit in 3 of last 5). This Southwest Division rivalry intensifies with stars like Wembanyama and Morant, but San Antonio’s recent dominance (6-4 ATS in last 10 H2H) gives them the edge.

Injury Report

Reports as of January 5, 2026 (not yet submitted for some teams, but based on latest updates):

San Antonio Spurs:

Victor Wembanyama (F/C): Questionable (right knee soreness; will travel with team but status uncertain after missing recent practice).

Two unnamed starters: Out (recent injuries from last week; impacting offensive rhythm).

No other major reports, but monitor for late additions.

Memphis Grizzlies:

Scotty Pippen Jr. (G): Out (left big toe surgery; re-evaluated in 12 weeks).

espn.com +1

Cedric Coward (F): Doubtful (left ankle sprain; suffered vs. Lakers on Jan 4).

Ja Morant (G): Questionable (right calf contusion; popped up on report before Jan 4 game).

Injuries have piled up, including Zach Edey (prior absence), forcing reliance on depth like Christian Koloko (recently signed).

The Grizzlies’ depth is severely tested, potentially giving the Spurs an advantage if Wembanyama plays.

Key Player Matchups

This Southwest clash features young stars and defensive battles, with injuries adding uncertainty. Expect a focus on paint control and perimeter speed in a mid-paced game.

Victor Wembanyama (SAS, F/C) vs. Jaren Jackson Jr. (MEM, F/C): If Wembanyama plays (averaging 24 PPG, 10 RPG, 4 BPG), his length and versatility test Jackson’s shot-blocking (2.5 BPG). Jackson (20 PPG) must avoid foul trouble against Wembanyama’s outside shooting (35% from three); this interior duel could decide rebounding (Spurs +4.4 edge season).

Chris Paul (SAS, G) vs. Ja Morant (MEM, G): Paul (12 APG) orchestrates San Antonio’s offense with veteran savvy. Morant (if available, 25 PPG, 8 APG) brings explosiveness but has been inefficient lately; Paul’s defense could force turnovers, while Morant’s athleticism tests the Spurs’ backcourt.

Jeremy Sochan (SAS, F) vs. Jake LaRavia (MEM, F): Sochan (versatile defender, 14 PPG) steps up if starters are out, containing LaRavia’s emerging scoring (12 PPG). This matchup highlights physicality on the wings.

Devin Vassell (SAS, G) vs. Marcus Smart (MEM, G): Vassell (18 PPG, 38% 3PT) provides spacing for Spurs. Smart (elite defender, 2 SPG) aims to disrupt; if Smart locks in, it limits San Antonio’s perimeter threat.

Betting Trends

San Antonio Spurs: 20-15 ATS overall (11-6 ATS away). They’ve gone 18-17 on over/under (9-8 O/U away). Trends: 7-3 ATS in last 10, but 3-2 ATS in last 5; over in 4 of last 6 road games; 6-4 ATS as favorites. Strong vs. sub-.500 teams (8-2 SU last 10).

Memphis Grizzlies: 16-19 ATS overall (8-10 ATS home). 17-18 on over/under (9-9 O/U home). Trends: 2-3 ATS in last 5, 4-6 ATS as underdogs; over in 6 of last 10; 1-4 ATS during current skid. Poor vs. winning teams (3-12 SU).

Head-to-Head: Spurs 6-4 ATS in last 10 meetings; under hit in 3 of last 5 (average 218 points). NBA trends: Road favorites like Spurs are 57% ATS vs. losing teams; games with injury-riddled underdogs hit the under 54% when totals are 220+.

Dec 31, 2025: W vs. Detroit Pistons (balanced effort; held opponents under 110 points).

Dec 29, 2025: W at Atlanta Hawks (defensive clampdown in fourth quarter).

Dec 27, 2025: W vs. Chicago Bulls (efficient shooting; +8 rebounding edge). Overall form: W-L-W-W-W, with a +6.2 point differential in the last five. Road form is shaky (7-10), but they’ve forced turnovers effectively (top-5 in steals per game). Season stats: 120.8 PPG (12th), 116.2 PPA (15th), 44.1 RPG (18th).

Minnesota Timberwolves: The Timberwolves are heating up, going 4-1 in their last five with wins over strong opponents, driven by Anthony Edwards’ scoring and Rudy Gobert’s rim protection.

Dec 28, 2025: L vs. Denver Nuggets (close loss; allowed 18 threes). Overall form: W-W-W-W-L, with a +10.4 point differential in the last five. Home form is solid (12-6), with a focus on paint dominance (top-3 in blocks). Season stats: 118.4 PPG (15th), 114.6 PPA (5th), 46.8 RPG (5th).

Series History

The Miami Heat hold a slight all-time edge over the Minnesota Timberwolves, leading 36-35 in 71 regular-season meetings.

However, Minnesota has won 3 of the last 5 encounters, including a 125-115 victory on January 3, 2026, at Miami’s Kaseya Center (Edwards scored 33, Reid 29; Heat’s streak snapped).

Other recent games:

Mar 7, 2025: Heat 106-104 Timberwolves (close win for Miami; Adebayo game-winner).

Nov 10, 2024: Heat 95-94 Timberwolves (defensive battle).

Dec 18, 2023: Heat 112-108 Timberwolves.

Oct 28, 2023: Timberwolves 90-106 Heat. Minnesota leads the 2025-26 season series 1-0, outscoring Miami by 10 points in their lone matchup. Games often feature high physicality and low scoring (under hit in 3 of last 5), with an average total of 220 points. This inter-conference rivalry highlights contrasting styles: Miami’s motion offense vs. Minnesota’s transition attack.

Injury Report

Reports as of January 5, 2026 (official reports not yet submitted for the game, but based on latest updates):

Miami Heat:

Tyler Herro (G): Questionable (right big toe contusion; missed recent games but upgraded after being available vs. Pelicans).

Jaime Jaquez Jr. (F): Out (ankle; sidelined since early January).

Pelle Larsson (G): Questionable (ankle; missed recent games).

Bam Adebayo (C): Probable (back; played through it recently).

Dru Smith (G): Probable (elbow soreness).

The Heat’s backcourt depth is tested, potentially forcing more minutes for Norman Powell and Terry Rozier.

Minnesota Timberwolves:

Terrence Shannon Jr. (G): Out (left foot abductor hallucis strain; extended absence).

Rocco Zikarsky (C): Day-to-day (assigned to G League but available if needed).

No other major injuries reported, but monitor for rest decisions with back-to-back potential. The Wolves’ core (Edwards, Gobert, Randle) remains intact.

Key Player Matchups

This inter-conference clash features star power and defensive battles, with Minnesota’s size challenging Miami’s perimeter game. Expect a focus on paint control and transition defense in a mid-paced affair.

Bam Adebayo (MIA, C) vs. Rudy Gobert (MIN, C): Adebayo (22 PPG, 10 RPG, versatile defender) uses his mobility to pull Gobert (12 RPG, 2.5 BPG, Defensive Player of the Year candidate) out of the paint. Gobert’s rim protection could limit Miami’s drives; this matchup decides rebounding (Wolves +2.7 edge season).

Tyler Herro (MIA, G) vs. Anthony Edwards (MIN, G): If Herro plays (24 PPG, 38% 3PT), his scoring tests Edwards’ defense. Edwards (28 PPG, explosive athlete) torched Miami for 33 on January 3; Herro must contain his drives to keep the game close.

Norman Powell (MIA, G) vs. Jaden McDaniels (MIN, F): Powell (hot streak, 34 points vs. NO) brings 3-point volume (career-high 9 threes). McDaniels (elite wing defender, 1.8 SPG) aims to disrupt; Powell’s off-ball movement could exploit if McDaniels switches.

Jimmy Butler (MIA, F) vs. Julius Randle (MIN, F): Butler (20 PPG, clutch performer) matches Randle’s physicality (22 PPG, 9 RPG). Randle’s rebounding edge tests Butler’s defense; this forward battle could swing late-game possessions.

Betting Trends

Miami Heat: 18-18 ATS overall (8-9 ATS away). They’ve gone 20-16 on over/under (10-7 O/U away). Trends: 4-1 ATS in last 5 games, 16-8 ATS when scoring 120+ (as in recent form), but 2-5 ATS vs. Western Conference; under in 4 of last 6 road games.

As underdogs, they’re 8-6 SU and 9-5 ATS.

Minnesota Timberwolves: 19-17 ATS overall (10-8 ATS home). 18-18 on over/under (9-9 O/U home). Trends: 4-1 ATS in last 5, 12-6 ATS at home, but 3-4 ATS vs. Eastern Conference; over in 5 of last 7 overall.

As favorites, they’re 15-5 SU and 11-9 ATS.

Head-to-Head: Timberwolves 3-2 ATS in last 5 meetings; over hit in 3 of 5 (average 230 points recently). NBA trends: Home favorites like Minnesota are 58% ATS vs. .500+ teams; inter-conference games hit the under 52% when totals are 220+.

New Orleans Pelicans: The Pelicans are in a tailspin, going 1-9 in their last 10 with a 3-7 ATS record, marked by defensive lapses and a four-game home losing streak.

Their last five games reflect ongoing struggles:

landofbasketball.com +1

Los Angeles has won the last five straight games, outscoring New Orleans by an average of 12.4 points per contest.

Key recent matchups:

Nov 30, 2025: Lakers 118-104 Pelicans (Lakers covered -8; over 222 total).

Mar 4, 2025: Lakers 124-112 Pelicans (defensive masterclass; under 228 total).

Nov 16, 2024: Lakers 110-98 Pelicans (blowout; Lakers +12 rebounding). The Lakers are 5-0 ATS in these games, with unders hitting in 3 of 5. Injury Report

Reports as of January 5, 2026 (official submissions pending, but based on latest updates):

Los Angeles Lakers:

Gabe Vincent (G): Questionable (undisclosed; upgraded recently, could provide bench spark).

Austin Reaves (G): Questionable (minor ankle; day-to-day from Dec 26 incident).

Jaxson Hayes (C): Questionable (illness; limited practice).

Other depth players like Trey Murphy III probable (knee), but the Pelicans’ injuries have crippled their rotation.

The Pelicans’ absences severely limit their upside, while the Lakers could be near full strength.

Key Player Matchups

This inter-division game pits the Lakers’ star power against the Pelicans’ youth, with Los Angeles exploiting mismatches in the paint and transition. Expect a fast-paced contest if Zion plays.

Anthony Davis (LAL, F/C) vs. Zion Williamson (NOP, F): Davis (26 PPG, 12 RPG, 2.5 BPG) dominates with length and versatility. Williamson (if available, 24 PPG) brings explosiveness, but Davis’ rim protection could neutralize drives; this battle controls the paint (Lakers +3.8 RPG edge).

LeBron James (LAL, F) vs. Brandon Ingram (NOP, F): James (25 PPG, 8 APG) orchestrates with experience against Ingram (22 PPG), a former Laker. Ingram’s scoring tests James’ defense; LeBron’s playmaking could expose New Orleans’ weak perimeter.

Luka Dončić (LAL, G) vs. CJ McCollum (NOP, G): Dončić (recent 36-point game) provides scoring punch (28 PPG). McCollum (18 PPG) must contain his drives without Murray; this backcourt clash decides transition opportunities.

Austin Reaves (LAL, G) vs. Herb Jones (NOP, F): If Reaves plays (15 PPG), his shooting stretches the floor. Jones (elite defender, 2 SPG) aims to disrupt; Reaves’ off-ball movement could create open looks.

Betting Trends

Los Angeles Lakers: 19-14 ATS overall (9-7 ATS away). They’ve gone 17-16 on over/under (8-8 O/U away). Trends: 6-4 ATS in last 10, 4-1 ATS as favorites vs. sub-.300 teams, but 3-2 ATS in last 5 road games; over in 4 of last 6 overall.

As road favorites, they’re 8-2 SU and 6-4 ATS.

New Orleans Pelicans: 12-25 ATS overall (7-15 ATS home). 16-21 on over/under (9-13 O/U home). Trends: 1-4 ATS in last 5, 2-8 ATS during home skid, but 4-6 ATS as underdogs; over in 3 of last 5 home games.

As home underdogs, they’re 2-12 SU and 5-9 ATS.

Head-to-Head: Lakers 5-0 ATS in last 5 meetings; over hit in 3 of 5 (average 225 points). NBA trends: Road favorites like Lakers are 62% ATS vs. bottom-five teams; games with injury-hit underdogs hit the under 56% when totals exceed 220.

Their last five games reflect mixed results:

Jan 3, 2026: W 110-104 vs. Houston Rockets (gritty home win; overcame early deficit with strong fourth quarter).

Jan 1, 2026: L 108-123 vs. Philadelphia 76ers (blown out at home; poor shooting and turnovers).

Dec 31, 2025: L at Oklahoma City Thunder (close road loss; defensive lapses in overtime).

Dec 29, 2025: W vs. Utah Jazz (balanced effort; efficient offense).

Dec 27, 2025: L at Denver Nuggets (struggled with rebounding). Overall form: W-L-L-W-L, with a -3.8 point differential in the last five. Away form is weak (5-13), but they’ve averaged 112.6 PPG on the road. Season stats: 113.5 PPG (20th), 116.4 PPA (22nd), 43.2 RPG (20th).

Sacramento Kings: The Kings are slumping, going 2-8 in their last 10 with a 0-5 ATS in their last five, amid a five-game skid and poor home performance.

Their last five games highlight defensive woes:

Jan 4, 2026: L 98-115 vs. Milwaukee Bucks (overpowered inside; allowed 37 from Antetokounmpo).

Jan 2, 2026: L 102-129 at Phoenix Suns (routed on the road; shot just 42% FG).

Dec 31, 2025: L vs. Los Angeles Clippers (close but faded late; turnover issues).

Dec 29, 2025: L at Golden State Warriors (defensive collapse in second half).

Dec 27, 2025: L vs. Portland Trail Blazers (poor shooting night). Overall form: L-L-L-L-L, with a -15.2 point differential in the last five. Home form is dismal (3-15), allowing 122.3 PPA (worst in league). Season stats: 108.8 PPG (28th), 122.3 PPA (30th), 42.9 RPG (24th).

Series History

The Dallas Mavericks hold a strong all-time edge over the Sacramento Kings, leading 103-84 in 187 regular-season meetings.

landofbasketball.com +1

Dallas has dominated recently, winning 4 of the last 5 games and covering the spread in 3 of those.

Key recent matchups:

Dec 27, 2025: Mavericks 118-110 Kings (Dallas pulled away late; high-scoring affair).

Mar 3, 2025: Mavericks 112-105 Kings (defensive battle; Mavericks +7 rebounding).

Earlier 2024-25: Mavericks won two more by double digits. Dallas leads the 2025-26 season series 1-0, outscoring Sacramento by an average of 8 points in recent games. Unders have hit in 8 of the last 10 H2H, averaging 218 points, reflecting physical, low-pace contests in this Western Conference rivalry.

Injury Report

Dallas Mavericks:

Kyrie Irving (G): Out indefinitely (knee injury; no return timetable, major blow to backcourt).

Other notes: No additional major injuries reported, but monitor for load management with Luka Dončić (probable, managing minor ailments).

Sacramento Kings:

Domantas Sabonis (C): Out (ongoing injury; hasn’t played with Murray this season).

Keegan Murray (F): Out (left ankle injury; left Jan 4 game vs. Bucks).

Keon Ellis (G): Out (left thumb injury; injured in first half vs. Bucks on Jan 4).

The Kings’ injuries decimate their frontcourt and depth, forcing reliance on DeMar DeRozan and De’Aaron Fox.

Key Player Matchups

This Western Conference tilt features guard-heavy battles, with Dallas’s offense testing Sacramento’s depleted defense. Expect a focus on perimeter scoring and transition play in a potentially high-scoring game.

Luka Dončić (DAL, G) vs. De’Aaron Fox (SAC, G): Dončić (33.6 PPG leader) is Dallas’s offensive engine, using pick-and-rolls to create. Fox (quick defender, 25 PPG) must contain his drives; this point guard duel could dictate pace, with Dončić’s size giving him an edge.

Klay Thompson (DAL, G) vs. DeMar DeRozan (SAC, F): Thompson (18 PPG, 38% 3PT) provides spacing for Dallas. DeRozan (22 PPG, mid-range specialist) tests Thompson’s defense; DeRozan’s scoring versatility could exploit mismatches.

P.J. Washington (DAL, F) vs. Malik Monk (SAC, G): Washington (versatile forward, 14 PPG) steps up with injuries, containing Monk’s bench scoring (20 PPG). This matchup highlights wing athleticism.

Daniel Gafford (DAL, C) vs. Alex Len (SAC, C): With Sabonis out, Len fills in (rim protector). Gafford (12 PPG, 8 RPG) dominates the paint; his rebounding could overwhelm Sacramento’s weak interior.

Betting Trends

Dallas Mavericks: 12-24 ATS overall (6-12 ATS away). They’ve gone 16-20 on over/under (8-10 O/U away). Trends: 1-4 ATS in last 5 games, 7-13 ATS in last 20 vs. Kings, 0-7 ATS in last 7 road games; under in 4 of last 5 road games vs. Kings; 2-5 ATS vs. Western Conference.

Sacramento Kings: 10-26 ATS overall (7-11 ATS home). 15-21 on over/under (8-10 O/U home). Trends: 0-5 ATS in last 5 games, 0-5 SU in last 5, under in 4 of last 6 games; under in 8 of last 10 vs. Dallas; 3-11 SU in last 14 home games; 1-7 ATS in January games.

Head-to-Head: Mavericks 4-1 ATS in last 5 meetings; under in 8 of last 10 (average 218 points). NBA trends: Road favorites like Dallas are 55% ATS vs. sub-.300 teams; games with bottom defenses like Kings hit the over 52% when totals are 230+.

PWHL Game Preview: Seattle Torrent (3-1-1-3) vs. Boston Fleet (6-0-1-2)

Game Details

Puckdrop is scheduled for 7:00 PM ET.

Venue: Agganis Arena, Boston, Massachusetts. This is the home arena for the Boston Fleet, located on the Boston University campus, with a capacity of around 6,150 for hockey games. It’s known for its intimate atmosphere and has hosted various PWHL games for the Fleet since the league’s inception.

Recent Team Forms

Seattle Torrent: The Torrent have shown resilience in their debut season, mixing gritty wins with some defensive lapses. Their last five games include:

Jan 3, 2026: 3-2 SO win at Toronto Sceptres (earned their first road victory; Hannah Bilka and Anna Wilgren scored in the shootout, with Lexie Adzija opening the scoring).

Dec 24, 2025: Win vs. Montréal Victoire (rebounded strongly at home after a prior loss).

Dec 21, 2025: 1-3 loss vs. Boston Fleet (struggled offensively against Boston’s defense).

Earlier games featured a mix of home wins and road struggles, with a -4 goal differential entering the new year. Overall form: W-W-L (two straight wins heading into this matchup), outscoring opponents 8-7 in their last three. They’ve excelled in shootouts and special teams recently, but road games remain a challenge (1-0-1-2 away).

Boston Fleet: The Fleet started hot but have cooled off, losing three of their last four after a PWHL-record start. Their last five games:

Jan 3, 2026: 2-4 loss vs. Vancouver Goldeneyes (blew a lead in a comeback defeat; marked back-to-back losses for the first time this season).

Dec 21, 2025: 3-1 win at Seattle Torrent (dominated with goals from defenders Daniela Pejšová and Riley Brengman).

Other recent results include four wins in December, but they’ve dropped three of four since mid-December. Form: L-L-W (entering on a two-game skid), with a +9 goal differential league-wide but allowing 10 goals in their last three games. Home form is strong (3-0-0-1 at Agganis and Tsongas arenas combined), but recent defensive breakdowns have been an issue.

Series History

This will be the second meeting between the expansion Seattle Torrent and the established Boston Fleet. In their lone prior matchup on December 21, 2025, at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, the Fleet won 3-1. Boston’s defense shone, scoring all three goals (a PWHL first for an all-defender goal game), with Pejšová, Brengman, and another blueliner contributing. Seattle’s lone goal came late, but they were outshot 32-24. Boston leads the all-time series 1-0, with a +2 goal differential. As a young rivalry, expect physicality—Seattle will look to avenge the home loss, while Boston aims to maintain dominance.

Injury Report

Seattle Torrent:

Defender Aneta Tejralová: Out (suspended two games for an illegal check to the head during a December 29, 2025, game). She misses this matchup, impacting Seattle’s blue line depth and physical presence.

Forward Jenna Buglioni: Questionable (took a hard hit into the boards on December 21, 2025, and needed assistance off the ice). No recent updates, but she hasn’t appeared in lineups since; monitor pre-game reports for her status, as her speed could be missed in forward rotations.

Boston Fleet:

Defender Daniela Pejšová: Out (upper-body injury sustained prior to January 3, 2026; missed the Vancouver game). The Fleet signed Mia Biotti to a 10-day contract as cover, suggesting Pejšová may miss additional time. Her absence weakens Boston’s defensive scoring, as she contributed in their prior win over Seattle. No other major injuries reported, but the team has leaned on depth players like Biotti amid recent slumps.

Both teams have Olympic-bound players (Seattle: Hilary Knight, Alex Carpenter, Hannah Bilka, Cayla Barnes; Boston: Aerin Frankel, Megan Keller, Haley Winn), but no Olympic-related absences are expected for this regular-season game.

Key Player Matchups

This game features star-studded talent on both sides, with Olympic selections highlighting potential turning points. Expect low-scoring, defensive battles given recent trends.

Hilary Knight (Seattle, F) vs. Megan Keller (Boston, D): Knight, a veteran leader and scoring threat (key in Seattle’s recent wins), will test Keller’s shutdown defense. Keller, an Olympian and PWHL Starting Six honoree for December, has been pivotal in limiting top forwards. If Knight breaks through, Seattle could steal momentum; Keller’s physicality could neutralize her.

Alex Carpenter (Seattle, F) vs. Aerin Frankel (Boston, G): Carpenter has been red-hot, becoming one of only four PWHL players to score in multiple shootouts this season (including the January 3 winner). She’ll face Frankel, Boston’s elite netminder and December Starting Six pick, who boasts a strong save percentage but has allowed more goals lately. This matchup could decide a close game or shootout.

Hannah Bilka (Seattle, F) vs. Susanna Tapani (Boston, F): Bilka’s speed and shootout prowess (scored the decider vs. Toronto) matches up against Tapani’s two-way play (18 points league-wide). Both are offensive catalysts; whoever controls the neutral zone could swing possession.

Corinne Schroeder (Seattle, G) vs. Boston’s Offensive Defenders (e.g., Riley Brengman, Haley Winn): Schroeder earned her first win with Seattle on January 3 (27 saves), but faces a Fleet blue line that’s scored a league-high six goals this season. Without Pejšová, Brengman and Winn must step up offensively while containing Seattle’s forwards.

Goaltending will be crucial: Schroeder (recent form strong) vs. Frankel (elite but in a team slump).

Betting Trends

Seattle Torrent: 4-5 against the spread (ATS) this season; 2-3 ATS on the road. They’ve gone over the total in 4 of 9 games, but unders in their last two (low-scoring wins). As underdogs, they’re 3-1-1-2, covering in recent upsets. Trend: Strong in shootouts (2-0 this season), but suspensions/injuries have hurt defensive trends (allowing 3+ goals in 4 of last 6).

Boston Fleet: 6-3 ATS overall; 3-1 ATS at home. Overs in 5 of 9 games early, but unders in 3 of last 4 amid slumping offense. As favorites, they’re 5-0-1-1, but failed to cover in recent losses. Trend: Home dominance (outscoring opponents 12-5 in home games), but 0-2 ATS in last two overall.

Head-to-Head: In their December meeting, Boston covered -1.5, and the game went under 5.5. PWHL trends favor unders in inter-conference games (60% this season), with expansion teams like Seattle often keeping games close on the road.

Overall league trend: PWHL games average 4.8 goals, with 55% hitting the under on 4.5-5.5 totals. Boston’s defensive strength vs. Seattle’s road woes points to a Fleet edge, but recent forms suggest value in Seattle +1.5.

NHL Morning Skate – January 6, 2026

NHL Morning Skate – Jan. 6, 2026

* Rookie Justin Sourdif scored his first career hat trick and 40-year-old Alex Ovechkin netted his 151st career game-winning goal (including playoffs) in a Capitals victory. The NHL has featured seven hat tricks in 2026 – the most through the first five days of a calendar year in League history.

Dylan Larkin tied franchise legend Nicklas Lidstrom on an all-time list and helped the Red Wings soar back atop the Eastern Conference standings.

Auston Matthews eyes rare company with another multi-goal game to start the 2026 calendar year as the Maple Leafs are featured in one of two national broadcasts in the United States on Tuesday (NHL on TNT), alongside Matthew Schaefer and the Islanders on ESPN+ and Hulu.

HATS CONTINUE TO FLY IN 2026 AS SOURDIF HAS CAREER NIGHT FOR CAPITALS

Justin Sourdif (3-2—5), Connor McMichael (0-4—4) and Alex Ovechkin (2-0—2) led Washington’s offensive output against Anaheim as the Capitals improved to 6-0-1 in their past seven games against the Ducks. Sourdif scored the NHL’s 40th hat trick of the season and seventh since Jan. 1 – the most through the first five days of a calendar year in League history (next closest: 5 from Jan. 1-5, 1976).

* Sourdif, who scored his first career hat trick while skating in his 46th career contest and did so in a span of 11:34, collected his fifth point in the third period and matched the franchise record for points in a game by a rookie (Greg Theberge: 2-3—5 on Nov. 21, 1981). Overall, he is the third rookie in as many seasons to register a five-point game, alongside Macklin Celebrini (3-2—5 on April 9, 2025) and Connor Bedard (1-4—5 on March 12, 2024).

* Ovechkin’s first tally Monday marked his 349th career home game with a goal (overtaking Gordie Howe for the most in NHL history) and his NHL record-extending 140th career game-winning goal in the regular season; his 151 (including playoffs) tied Jaromir Jagr for the most in League history.

* Ovechkin – who also moved within seven multi-goal games of tying Wayne Gretzky’s NHL record (189) – continues THE GR8 CHASE for Victory Over Cancer with the Capitals, Hockey Fights Cancer and V Foundation by personally donating to pediatric cancer research for each regular-season goal he scores for the remainder of his career. Click here for details.

KRAKEN, RED WINGS CLIMB STANDINGS IN #NHLSTATS: LIVE UPDATES

The Kraken and Red Wings each skated to road wins and climbed the standings in the process. Find notes on the rest of Monday’s slate in the latest edition of #NHLStats: Live Updates.

Jacob Melanson, a fifth-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft (No. 131), scored his first career goal – the first of his team’s five unanswered tallies in Calgary – as the Kraken tied the franchise’s second-longest point streak (7-0-1 in 8 GP). Before their streak, Seattle (19-14-7, 45 points) sat five points back of the playoff line in the Western Conference, but overtook Anaheim (21-18-3, 45 points) on Monday for third place in the Pacific Division standings due to the games played tiebreaker.

* Dylan Larkin netted his 264th career goal and tied Hall of Fame member Nicklas Lidstrom for 11th place on Detroit’s all-time list as the Red Wings (25-15-4, 54 points) leapfrogged the idle Lightning (25-13-3, 53 points) and Hurricanes (25-14-3, 53 points) for first place in the Eastern Conference.

MATTHEWS, SCHAEFER CAN ACHIEVE RARE FEATS ON TNT, ESPN+

Tuesday’s action consists of 10 games, including a pair of nationally televised contests in the U.S. featuring first overall picks when Auston Matthews and the Maple Leafs and Panthers square off on TNT and HBO MAX in a rematch from the 2025 Second Round, while the Devils visit Matthew Schaefer and the Islanders on ESPN+ and Hulu.

* Fresh off cementing himself atop Toronto’s all-time goals list, Matthews can continue his strong start to 2026 against a streaking Sam Bennett in the teams’ second meeting this season (TOR: 4-1 W on Dec. 2). Matthews has started the new year with consecutive multi-goal outings and can help the Maple Leafs start 2-0 against a reigning Stanley Cup champion for the third time in the NHL’s modern era (since 1944-45) after doing so against the 2018-19 Capitals and 1998-99 Red Wings.

* Bennett can join Brad Marchand (10 GP) as the second Panthers player with a double-digit point streak in 2025-26 – a feat the franchise has seen in a single season twice before (2022-23 & 2018-19). Florida can become the second team to have two players with a 10-game run this season, following Montreal (Nick Suzuki: 12 GP & Cole Caufield: 11 GP).

* Schaefer helped his club earn their first win of 2026 with a two-goal showing on Jan. 3 which ended with his second career overtime goal. The No. 1 pick has found the back of the net in his past two games and can become the first 18-year-old defenseman in NHL history to record a three-game goal streak. His next goal would also tie him with Bobby Orr (13 in 1966-67) for the second most in a season by an 18-year-old blueliner.

Ohio Shatters Sports Betting Records in November as Online Giants Dominate the Market

Ohio’s sports betting industry exploded in November 2025, smashing previous handle records and widening the gap between online powerhouses and struggling retail sportsbooks. FanDuel and DraftKings surged ahead, while brick‑and‑mortar locations continued their slide into irrelevance.

Revenue Soars 35.5%

The Buckeye State posted $133 million in sports betting revenue, a massive 35.5% jump from October, making November the second‑biggest month since legal wagering launched in January 2023.

Bettors wagered more than $1.15 billion, edging past October’s previous record of $1.13 billion. Online platforms generated $131.2 million of that revenue, leaving retail sportsbooks with a meager $1.8 million—a staggering illustration of the widening digital divide.

FanDuel and DraftKings Pull Away

FanDuel dominated November with $55.4 million in online revenue, while DraftKings followed with $39.3 million. BetMGM lagged far behind at $9 million.

For 2025 overall, FanDuel controlled 43.4% of Ohio’s online revenue, with DraftKings at 28.4%, leaving smaller operators fighting for scraps.

Retail sportsbooks continued their downward spiral, generating just $11.7 million in the first 11 months of the year compared to $890.1 million online. Several retail locations posted repeated losses.

Regulatory Pressure Mounts

November’s surge aligned with peak NFL and NBA action and $33 million in promotional spending, but not everyone is celebrating.
Governor Mike DeWine has voiced regret over legalizing sports betting, citing aggressive marketing and integrity concerns after two investigations into suspicious wagers involving Cleveland Guardians pitchers.

Regulators have since tightened rules on certain player props and warned operators against offering prediction‑market‑style products.

What’s Next

Operators are preparing for changes to promotional credit tax rules, which will become partially deductible in 2027 and gradually increase to 20% by 2032—an advantage likely to favor deep‑pocketed online leaders.

With NFL playoffs and college football bowl season driving heavy action, December is poised to keep Ohio’s momentum rolling, solidifying the state as one of the fastest‑growing sports betting markets in the country.

San Francisco Giants agree to one-year contract with RHP Tyler Mahle

0

SAN FRANCISCO — The Giants have agreed to a one-year Major League contract with right‑handed pitcher Tyler Mahle (pronounced MAH‑lee, rhymes with “rally”).

Mahle, 31, is coming off a standout 2025 season with Texas in which he delivered a career‑best 2.18 ERA (21 ER, 86.2 IP) and a 1.13 WHIP across 16 starts. He went 6–4 and set personal bests in opponents’ batting average (.218), OPS (.593), and home runs allowed per nine innings (0.52), minimum 10 starts.

He was named the Rangers’ Player of the Month for March/April after opening the season 3–0 with a 1.14 ERA and 0.98 WHIP over six April starts. Mahle led the American League in ERA, opponents’ OPS (.465), and slugging percentage (.211) during the season’s first month. He opened his 2025 campaign with 40.2 consecutive homerless innings—the longest such streak to begin a season by any Major League starter—and surrendered only five home runs all year. Through his first 10 starts, he posted a 5–1 record with a 1.47 ERA and 0.98 WHIP.

Mahle spent June 12 to September 18 on the Injured List with right shoulder fatigue. After returning, he made two starts and allowed just one earned run over 9.2 innings (0.93 ERA).

A seventh‑round pick by Cincinnati in 2013 out of Westminster (CA) High School, Mahle has appeared in 142 Major League games (141 starts) over nine seasons with the Reds (2017–22), Twins (2022–23), and Rangers (2024–25). He owns a career 39–46 record with a 4.07 ERA and 753 strikeouts (9.22 K/9). Since 2020, he has gone 28–23 with a 3.61 ERA (190 ER, 473.1 IP) in 90 games (89 starts).
