NFL Announces Head Coaches for 101st East-West Shrine Bowl
Game to kickoff at 7 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Jan. 27 from the Ford Center at the Star, home of the Dallas Cowboys, and will be televised on NFL Network
NEW YORK – The National Football League announced today the head coaches for the 101st East-West Shrine Bowl, Lunda Wells of the Dallas Cowboys and Marquice Williams of the Atlanta Falcons.
“Coaches Marquice Williams and Lunda Wells have the opportunity to not only evaluate top athlete prospects, but also to showcase their skills in leading players and coaching staffs in this high-profile game,” said Troy Vincent Sr., NFL executive vice president of football operations. “This is an important evaluation week for prospects as well as for coaches as they pursue their professional and personal goals. The game also shows the humanitarian side of football as participants greatly encourage the children and families at the Shriners Hospitals.”
Wells recently completed his sixth season as the tight ends coach of the Dallas Cowboys (2020-25). Prior to his time in Dallas, he spent seven seasons with the New York Giants (2012-2019) as an offensive quality control and assistant offensive line coach. Wells, who also spent four seasons at LSU (2008-11), played offensive line for four seasons (2002-05) at Southern University.
Williams, who was also a head coach in the East-West Shrine Bowl last year, recently completed his fifth season as the Falcons special team’s coordinator (2021-25) after serving two seasons as assistant special teams coach with the Detroit Lions. Williams participated in the Ozzie Newsome General Manager Forum and Quarterback Coaching Summit in 2023, a program designed for the most promising front office personnel and coaches on the offensive side of the ball.
“We are extremely excited to have two experienced and respected NFL coaches leading our East-West Shrine Bowl,” said Bob Roller, Vice President of Sports for Shriners Hospitals for Children. “Marquice Williams is a returning head coach for us, and we love his passion for our game and the mission of Shriners Children’s. At the conclusion of the NFL regular season, teams nominated deserving assistant coaches who were reviewed by a panel that includes NFL Football Operations staff, East-West Shrine Bowl leadership, members of the NFL’s General Managers Advisory Committee and the Fritz Pollard Alliance.
Coaches nominated by NFL clubs must be active assistant coaches who display extraordinary teaching and communication skills and are recognized for their integrity and commitment to excellence in the coaching profession. The coaches must be accomplished at developing and preparing players to compete in the NFL.
The 101st East-West Shrine Bowl, which features some of college football’s best prospects, will kick off at 7 p.m. ET (6 p.m. CT) on Tuesday, January 27 from the Ford Center at the Star in Frisco, Texas, home of the Dallas Cowboys, and will be televised on NFL Network.
For more than 100 years, some of football’s greatest players and coaches have contributed to the tradition of the East-West Shrine Bowl, the nation’s first college all-star football game. Created by the Shriners in 1925, the game is driven by the desire to support Shriners Hospitals for Children in its mission to help children in need of expert medical care. Participating players make an annual visit to the local Shriners Hospital, visiting children and staff in an experience that they will truly never forget.
NFL Announces Head Coaches for 2026 Panini Senior Bowl

NEW YORK – The National Football League announced today the head coaches for the 2026 Panini Senior Bowl, Clint Hurtt of the Philadelphia Eagles and Joel Thomas of the New Orleans Saints.
“This is an opportunity for two excellent coaches, Joel Thomas of the New Orleans Saints and Clint Hurtt of the Philadelphia Eagles, to take the reins as head coaches in leading their staffs and top football athletes in the Senior Bowl’s week-long evaluation of NFL prospects,” said Troy Vincent Sr., NFL executive vice president of football operations. “The Senior Bowl is not only a showcase for top football student-athletes, but also a wonderful opportunity for coaches that are nominated by their NFL clubs to further develop their skills and learn from one another.”
Hurtt recently completed his second season as the senior defensive assistant/defensive line coach for the Philadelphia Eagles (2024-25) after spending seven seasons with the Seattle Seahawks (2017-23), including two as defensive coordinator. Prior to his NFL career, he spent 13 years coaching college football, including four years as defensive line coach at both Louisville (2010-13) and his alma mater, the University of Miami (2006-09), where he played defensive line and was a three-year letterman (1997, 1999-2000).
“We are thrilled to have Clint Hurtt as our head coach of the National Team in the 2026 Panini Senior Bowl,” said Drew Fabianich, the executive director of the Panini Senior Bowl. “He is a highly regarded coach with a proven track record throughout his career. Clint will make a positive impact on his players and coaches during the week with his leadership and deep knowledge of the game. He will be a great mentor for the top prospects in the 2026 Draft.”
Thomas, a 25-year coaching veteran, returned to the New Orleans Saints in 2025 as associate head coach/running backs coach after previously spending nine seasons (2015-23) with the club. In 2024, he coached running backs for the New York Giants. Prior to the NFL, he spent 13 seasons as a running backs coach in the college ranks, including time with Washington (2009-12), Purdue (2006-08), his alma mater Idaho (2004-05) and Louisville (2002-03). Thomas played running back at Idaho (1993-98) where he holds school records for rushing yards and touchdowns and was inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008.
“It’s a great pleasure to have Joel Thomas as our head coach of the American Team in the 2026 Panini Senior Bowl,” Fabianich said. “Joel is highly respected throughout the league because of his leadership, work ethic, and his knowledge of the game. He has the ability to connect with players and coaches which further strengthens his credentials as a rising star among NFL coaches. He will serve our players well in their preparation for the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft.”
This is the fourth year the Senior Bowl is implementing a “Coach Up” format in which NFL coordinators and assistant coaches are placed into elevated or different roles from the ones they currently hold with their respective clubs. Head coaches and general managers from all non-playoff teams and Wild Card round participants had the opportunity to nominate assistant coaches. Hurtt and Thomas were then selected by a group composed of league office executives and representatives from the General Managers Advisory Committee.
The Panini Senior Bowl, widely regarded as the preeminent college football all-star game and the first stage in the NFL Draft process, is the longest continuously running all-star game and has taken place in Mobile, Ala., for the previous 75 years. The 76th Senior Bowl will kick off at 2:30 p.m. ET (1:30 p.m. CT) on Saturday, Jan. 31, from the University of South Alabama’s Hancock Whitney Stadium and will be televised on NFL Network.
Minnesota Frost silences the New York Sirens in 3-2 overtime victory
NEWARK, NJ – The Minnesota Frost secured a 3-2 overtime victory in their first meeting of the season against the New York Sirens on Friday night at Prudential Center. The Frost offense was powered entirely by U.S. Olympians, including the overtime goal by Kendall Coyne Schofield on a play where Taylor Heise faked a shot and passed to the captain who buried the 2-on-1 feed to end the Sirens’ record four-game winning streak. Minnesota opened the scoring when Britta Curl-Salemme capitalized in front of the net at 8:55 of the first period off a Heise pass. Sirens rookie Casey O’Brien tied the game at 1-1 with a shorthanded ‘jailbreak’ goal on a breakaway at 16:24 to close out the first. The Frost responded early in the second period with a Kelly Pannek goal from Grace Zumwinkle and Coyne Schofield just 35 seconds after puck drop. Taylor Girard tied the game for the Sirens at 4:04 of the middle frame to end the scoring in regulation. After neither team could take advantage in a back-and-forth scoreless third, the teams headed to overtime where Coyne Schofield ended the game just 52 seconds into the extra frame. Nicole Hensley produced a strong performance with 24 saves in her return to the Minnesota crease for the first time since Dec. 30 after missing time due to illness. Kayle Osborne stopped 23 of 26 shots for New York, continuing her streak as the team’s only goaltender to appear in a game this season.
New York heads to Washington, D.C. for this Sunday’s Takeover Tour at Capital One Arena where they will face off against the Montréal Victoire at 2 p.m. ET in a matchup between two teams tied for third place in the standings. Minnesota, who stands alone in second place, returns to Grand Casino Arena for their first contest in a three-game homestand against Montréal on Wednesday.

You know that whether she’s scoring goals in overtime or making elite plays in overtime, or five on five. Sirens Head Coach Greg Fargo on the team grasping on the energy in the third period: “It [the third period] did open up. We noticed they were trying to stretch the zone and get behind our right defense to open up the ice. When teams do that, the game becomes more back and forth and turns into a bit of a track meet. That led to more rushes, especially in the third period, and more chances at both ends.”
NOTABLES
Minnesota improved its overtime record to 2-2 this season but are still searching for their first regulation win against New York since Mar. 16, 2024, of the inaugural season. The Frost beat the Sirens once last season in a shootout at Prudential Center on Dec. 22, 2024.
The Frost won their first on the road in three games since winning in Toronto on Dec. 30.
New York suffered their first loss since Dec. 21, ending their team record four-game winning streak. The Sirens have points in five straight games (4-0-1-0) for the second time in team history following a stretch of five straight games beyond regulation (0-3-2-0) from Jan. 28 to Feb. 23, 2024.
Prior to tonight, the Sirens were the only PWHL team without an overtime or shootout decision this season. Last season, New York had nine results beyond regulation including a 3-1 record in games decided in overtime.
The Sirens lead the league with three shorthanded goals, matching their combined total over the last two seasons (one in 2024-25 and two in 2023-24).
Four of the league’s top six scorers are all members of the Frost with 12 or more points in 12 games.
Kendall Coyne Schofield recorded her fourth multi-point game of the season with a goal and an assist to extend her point streak to three consecutive games (2G, 3A) and bring her season point total to 14 (9G, 5A) in 12 games for a share of the league lead with teammate Britta Curl-Salemme. The Frost captain moved into second in all-time PWHL scoring with 54 career points (27G, 27A), moving ahead of Toronto’s Daryl Watts (27G, 25A).
Taylor Heise extended her assist and point streak to three-straight games (1G, 5A) and is the first player in the PWHL this season to reach 10 assists as the league’s all-time leader in the category with 33. The Frost forward’s second-straight multi-point performance, and fourth of the season, brings her point total to 12 in as many games.
Britta Curl-Salemme scored her fifth goal of the season in her 12th game and is the first player in the PWHL this season to record at least one point in 10 different games. The goal was her third point over the last two games to bring her season total to 14 for a share of the league lead. Curl-Salemme is now just one point away from matching her 2024-25 season point total of 15 (9G, 6A) in 28 games as a rookie.
Kelly Pannek notched her fifth goal of the season to record a new career-high through 12 games, surpassing the four she scored in 24 games during the inaugural season. The Frost alternate captain has points in consecutive games to bring her season total to 12, one more than her 2024-25 total of 11 in 30 games. She also led tonight’s game with a season-high 25 faceoffs.
Casey O’Brien recorded the first shorthanded goal and fourth overall of her rookie campaign, bringing her season point total to eight to lead all PWHL rookies. The Sirens third overall pick extended her point streak to three-straight games (1G, 2A), a new career-high.
Taylor Girard grabbed her fifth goal of the season and 10th of her career to become the 35th player in PWHL history to reach an all-time double-digit goal total. The veteran reached five goals in 12 games this season, matching her accumulated total across 46 games in the last two seasons.
Nicole Hensley notched her fifth win in her sixth start, backstopping the Frost to 15 of a possible 18 points when she’s between the pipes. The performance leaves Hensley with the third-lowest goals against average (1.48) and second-highest save percentage (.949) among goaltenders with multiple starts this season.
Kayle Osborne suffered the first overtime loss of her career while making her record 12th straight start of the season for the Sirens. She allowed three goals in two games during New York’s record four-game win streak along with two shutouts.
Sarah Fillier has earned an assist in four consecutive games where the Sirens have been the home team, including three-straight when she’s been in the lineup at Prudential Center. The Sirens alternate captain and Canadian Olympian also scored her only goal of the season in the team’s Nov. 29 home opener.
Micah Zandee-Hart produced the lone assist on Girard’s goal for her second helper of the season. The Sirens captain has recorded five of her 15 career points against Minnesota.
Grace Zumwinkle’s first assist of the season ends a career-high 11-game stretch without a helper. The Frost forward now has six points in 12 games, including three (2G, 1A) over the last two games.
Denisa Křížová led all skaters with five shots on goal, a season-high for the Czech Olympian.
Kristin O’Neill went 15-for-23 on faceoffs, recording her fifth career game with at least 15 wins at the dot. The Sirens forward has taken the most faceoffs in the league this season with 231 and is currently tied with the Seattle’s Alex Carpenter for the league lead in wins at 135.
Maddie Rooney and Lee Stecklein were scratched from Minnesota’s lineup today due to illness.

Tampa Bay Lightning recall G Brandon Halverson from AHL Syracuse Crunch
TAMPA BAY – The Tampa Bay Lightning have recalled goaltender Brandon Halverson from the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League, Vice President and General Manager Julien BriseBois announced today.
Halverson, 29, has appeared in 20 games for the Crunch this season and owns a 12-6-2 record with a 2.42 goals-against average and an .899 save percentage. Halverson has recorded three shutouts this season, tied for the second-most among all AHL goaltenders. The 6-foot-5, 235-pound netminder registered a five-game winning streak from November 19 to December 19, which included an assist on December 19 in a 5-3 win at Hartford.
A native of Traverse City, Michigan, Halverson has played in 129 career AHL games between the Crunch, Tucson Roadrunners and Hartford Wolfpack, posting a 59-49-17 record with a .901 save percentage, a 2.72 goals-against average, nine shutouts and three assists. He recorded his first career NHL start with the Lightning last season, a 6-4 loss March 22 at Utah.
Halverson was originally drafted by the New York Rangers in the second round, 59th overall, of the 2014 NHL Draft. He signed a two-year AHL contract with Syracuse on November 28, 2023 before inking a two-year, two-way contract with Tampa Bay on February 3, 2025.
Minnesota Wild Recalls Nicolas Aube-Kubel, Hunter Haight and David Jiricek from Iowa
SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Minnesota Wild President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Bill Guerin today announced the National Hockey League (NHL) club has recalled forwards Nicolas Aube-Kubel (oh-BAY koo-BEHL) and Hunter Haight and defenseman David Jiricek (YIHR-ih-chehk) from the Iowa Wild of the American Hockey League (AHL) and placed forwards Matt Boldy (lower body) and Joel Eriksson Ek (lower body) on Injured Reserve. Minnesota also reassigned defenseman Carson Lambos to Iowa.
Aubé-Kubel, 29 (5/10/96), has collected one assist in four games with Minnesota this season. He also owns 17 points (7-10=17), 30 penalty minutes (PIM), 48 shots and two game-winning goals (GWG) in 31 games with Iowa, ranking T-2nd on the team in goals and third in points and assists. The 6-foot, 214-pound native of Slave Lake, Alberta, recorded two points (1-1=2), 19 PIM and 18 shots on goal in 22 games with the Buffalo Sabres and New York Rangers last season while also collecting nine points (5-4=9), six PIM and one GWG in 15 AHL games with the Rochester Americans and Hartford Wolfpack.
For his career, Aubé-Kubel owns 81 points (32-49=81), 208 PIM, three GWG, 337 shots on goal and a plus-11 rating in 308 career NHL games over eight seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers (2018-21), Colorado Avalanche (2021-22), Toronto Maple Leafs (2022-23), Washington Capitals (2022-24), Buffalo (2024-25), New York Rangers (2024-25) and Minnesota (2025-26). Haight, 21 (4/4/04), made his NHL debut Oct. 9 at St. Louis and has appeared in two games with Minnesota this season. The 5-foot-10, 187-pound native of Strathroy, Ontario, has also collected 12 points (7-5=12), one power-play goal (PPG) and one GWG in 26 games for Iowa this season, ranking T-2nd on the team in goals. He was named to the 2026 AHL All-Star Classic on Jan. 15. Haight recorded 34 points (20-14=34) in 67 games during his debut campaign with Iowa last season, ranking second on the team in shots (154), goals and PPG and sixth in points. He also ranked T-8th among AHL rookies in goals. For his career, Haight has skated in 93 games across two AHL seasons (2024-26) with Iowa, totaling 46 points (27-19=46), 40 PIM, seven PPG and two GWG.
Haight was selected by Minnesota in the second round (No. 47 overall) of the 2022 NHL Draft and wears sweater No. 37 with the Wild.

The 6-foot-4, 204-pound native of Klatovy, Czech Republic, owns 13 points (2-11=13) in 77 career NHL games with Columbus (2022-24) and Minnesota (2024-26). Jiricek also owns 72 points (16-56=72) and 244 shots on goal in 130 career AHL games with Cleveland (2022-24) and Iowa (2024-26).
Jiricek was originally selected by Columbus in the first round (sixth overall) of the 2022 NHL Draft and was acquired by Minnesota in a trade with the Blue Jackets on Nov. 30, 2024. He wears sweater No. 55 with the Wild.
Boldy, 24 (4/5/01) owns 51 points (27-24=51), seven PPG, three GWG and two shorthanded goals (SHG) in 48 games this season. The 6-foot-2, 201-pound native of Milford, Mass., ranks T-3rd in the NHL in goals, T-7th in SHG, 10th in shots (157) and T-17th in points. He had skated in 203 consecutive NHL games, the sixth longest streak in franchise history.
Eriksson Ek, 28 (1/29/97) has collected 32 points (11-21=32), 20 PIM, 133 shots and two GWG in 45 games this season. The 6-foot-2, 207-pound native of Karlstad, Sweden, ranks T-3rd on Minnesota in assists, T-4th in points and fifth in goals. He ranks fourth in the NHL in total face-offs (936) and is sixth in face-offs won (465).
Lambos, 23 (1/14/03), was recalled by Minnesota yesterday and owns eight points (3-5=8), 49 shots and 28 penalty minutes (PIM) in 34 games with Iowa this season, ranking T-1st among team defensemen in goals. The 6-foot-1, 191-pound native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, made his NHL debut at Columbus on Dec. 18.

Omaha Supernovas Fall in Five-Set Thriller to Atlanta Vibe
OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha Supernovas, the world’s leading professional volleyball franchise, jumped out to a 2-0 set lead but could not hold off a surging Atlanta Vibe (2-1) in a 25-23, 25-17, 20-25, 22-25, 6-15 five-set loss Friday night on Kiewit Court in the CHI Health Center in front of 9,610 fans.
Reigning Outside Hitter of the Year Brooke Nuneviller tallied a team-high 20 points as part of an 18-kill, 10-dig double-double. She also added two blocks and one assist. Sarah Parsons recorded 14 kills and 15 digs, along with two blocks and an ace, to finish with 17 points. Opposite Merritt Beason had her best night of the 2026 campaign against the team that drafted her No. 1 overall last season, posting season highs in points (16), kills (16) and assists (2). Her defensive strides continued to show as the former Nebraska All-American totaled 12 digs, joining Nuneviller and libero Morgan Hentz as the only Supernovas to open the season with double-digit digs in all three matches.
Hentz led all players with 16 digs and added eight assists. Setter Sydney Hilley finished with 49 assists, 11 digs and two kills.
First-year pro middle blocker Elise Goetzinger continued to find success on the slide, registering nine kills on a .294 hitting percentage. She also added one block and one ace for 11 points. Janice Leao started the first three sets and logged two kills, two blocks, two digs and one ace. Leyla Blackwell made her season debut in the fourth and fifth sets, recording two kills.
Overall, the Supernovas (2-1) hit .175 with seven blocks, three aces, 67 digs and 61 assists.
Atlanta’s Leah Edmond reminded MLV why she was named MVP in 2024, finishing with 21 kills on a .419 hitting percentage, 12 digs, three blocks and one ace while posting a team-high 57 percent positive passing rate. Outside hitter Pia Timmer (12) and opposite Anna Dixon (12) also reached double figures for the Vibe. Atlanta hit .287 with 18 blocks, four aces, 70 digs and 57 assists.
Omaha returns to action Sunday, Jan. 18, at 3 p.m. CST for Farmers Appreciation as it hosts the Orlando Valkyries (2-0) at Kiewit Court at the CHI Health Center. The match will air on CBS Sports Network and be carried statewide on the Supernovas Radio Network.

Set One: Omaha opened the match with an ace for a quick lead. The Supernovas built a 10-3 advantage behind kills from Hilley, Nuneviller and Parsons. The run came to a halt with back-to-back kills by Timmer and middle blocker Khori Louis. Goetzinger and Nuneviller responded to maintain a seven-point lead at 12-5. Service and hitting errors allowed the gap to close to 13-10. Parsons and Leao answered immediately after another Atlanta kill to keep a steady edge at 15-11. After trading attacking and service errors, the set intensified as the Supernovas went on a run with kills from Parsons, Goetzinger and two consecutive points from Beason to take control at 23-17. The Vibe responded with five straight kills to close the gap to 23-22, but Nuneviller closed the set with back-to-back kills for a 25-23 win.
Omaha hit .136 in the opening set with two blocks and one ace. Nuneviller totaled a team-high four kills. Atlanta hit .156 with three blocks and one ace. Dixon recorded five of her 12 kills in the set.
Set Two: The teams exchanged early kills and hitting errors before Goetzinger gave Omaha a 6-3 edge. A Supernovas service error allowed Atlanta to capitalize and tie the set on blocks from Dixon and No. 2 overall draft pick Ava Martin. Parsons answered with a kill, and the Supernovas pulled away with four straight kills from Beason, three from Goetzinger and two more from Parsons to build a 19-12 lead. Dixon and Edmond led the Vibe charge, but it was not enough against the aggressive offense from Nuneviller, Beason and Parsons, who all recorded kills to reach set point at 24-17. Leao finished the frame with a kill from the middle for a 25-17 win.
Beason went nuclear, trying the franchise record for single-set points (10) and kills (10) while hitting .643. The Supernovas hit .432 with one block and one ace. The Vibe posted a .294 hitting percentage with two blocks.
Set Three: Atlanta opened the set with a service error, but Edmond answered with a kill. After an Omaha service error and an Atlanta challenge, the score was back tied at two. The Vibe then took control with kills from Edmond and Timmer and a block from Raven Colvin. Omaha answered with kills from Beason and Nuneviller. The teams traded points before Omaha took a one-point lead on a Parsons kill. Atlanta tied the set with an Edmond kill. An ace from Leao and a Nuneviller kill gave the Supernovas a 12-10 advantage, but Colvin, Dixon and Edmond all followed with kills to tie the set at 13. With the score tied at 18, an Omaha error gave the Vibe a 19-18 lead. Edmond added another kill for a 21-19 advantage, and a Nuneviller attack sailed wide to force an Omaha timeout trailing 22-19. After the break, Averi Carlson and Beason traded service errors before a Dixon block gave Atlanta set point. A Beason attack error sealed a 25-20 win for the Vibe.
Omaha finished the set with 10 errors and 12 kills for a .047 clip. Nuneviller led the team with five kills, while the team totaled one ace and one block. Atlanta hit .379 with five blocks and one ace. Edmond went five of seven for a .714 hitting percentage.
Set Four: Omaha opened with a service error, but Nuneviller answered with two kills to tie the set at three. Capitalizing on an Atlanta service error, Goetzinger and Nuneviller helped the Supernovas take a brief lead before the Vibe responded with a three-point run that included two service aces. After trading service errors, Goetzinger and Parsons recorded kills to tie the set at nine. Atlanta took advantage of more Omaha service errors and added another ace to go up 12-10. Parsons tallied back-to-back kills to tie the set again, but Edmond answered with two of her own to give the Vibe a 15-12 lead. Blackwell sparked an Omaha run with a kill, and Nuneviller followed with three straight points to tie the set at 16. The teams traded points down the stretch, with kills from Nuneviller, Parsons and Goetzinger, while Colvin, Timmer and Edmond responded for Atlanta. A Vibe attack error and a Parsons kill tied the set at 20. Atlanta answered with three straight kills. After a service error, Nuneviller recorded a kill, but Edmond followed with another, and a Parsons attack error forced a fifth set following a 25-22 Atlanta win.
Omaha hit .256 in the set with two blocks. Nuneviller posted six kills on 12 swings with no errors. Atlanta hit .333 with three blocks, two aces and a match-high seven kills.
Set Five: The teams traded early points before Atlanta rattled off five straight to build a 7-2 lead. Nuneviller halted the run, but the Vibe regained control with kills from Colvin and Timmer to go ahead 11-4. Goetzinger added a kill to slow the momentum, but Atlanta closed the match on Louis’ second block of the night to complete the reverse sweep.
Omaha hit minus-.100 in the final set with five errors. Goetzinger led the team with two points. Atlanta hit .375 with five blocks, which accounted for a third of its points. Timmer and Edmond combined for six of the team’s eight kills.
