This $135,000 sprint for older NY-breds features a competitive field of seven, with a projected fast pace set by speedsters like Acoustic Ave and Quick to Accuse, potentially setting up for closers such as The Wine Steward. NHL Morning Skate from Milan – Feb. 12, 2026

* Stars were on full display in Team Canada’s first win of the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026, including Oilers captain Connor McDavid who tied the country’s record for most assists in a game at an Olympics involving NHL players.

* Avalanche forward Brock Nelson, who owns a deep family history at the Winter Olympics, netted the game-winning goal and two sets of brothers also found the score sheet as part of Team USA’s tournament-opening win.

* Three of four contests between Team Finland and Team Sweden at Winter Olympic Games featuring NHL players have concluded as one-goal outings and now the longstanding rivalry renews with Group B action on Friday.

STARS SHINE FOR TEAM CANADA IN OPENING GAME AT MILANO CORTINA 2026
Veterans and young stars alike led the way in Team Canada’s opening game as Connor McDavid (0-3—3), Sidney Crosby (0-2—2), Nathan MacKinnon (1-0—1) and Macklin Celebrini (1-0—1) found the score sheet in Canada’s 11th straight win at Olympics Games involving NHL players. Celebrini (19 years, 244 days), who scored 19:54 into his Olympic debut, became the first teenager with a game-winning goal in an Olympic tournament with NHL participation.

* McDavid tied the Team Canada record for most assists in a game at an Olympics involving NHL players. The Oilers captain and Avalanche forward MacKinnon, who rank first and second in NHL scoring at the Olympic break, along with Penguins captain Crosby combined for a power-play goal exactly one year after doing so for Team Canada just 56 seconds into their contest against Sweden at the 4 Nations Face-Off.

* Celebrini became the seventh teenager to record a point in an Olympics with NHL players, and the first Canadian on that list. The Sharks forward also became the fourth teenager to score a goal in their first-ever Olympic period at a tournament with NHL players, following Olli Määttä (Feb. 13, 2014 w/ FIN), Ilya Kovalchuk (Feb. 15, 2002 w/ RUS) and Oliver Setzinger (Feb. 9, 2002 w/ AUT).

* Crosby (38 years, 189 days) became the oldest player to record a point for Team Canada at an Olympics with NHL participation, surpassing Ray Bourque (37 years, 52 days on Feb 18, 1998). The Penguins captain also became the seventh skater to record 10 or more career points with Team Canada at Olympic Games involving NHL players.

Jordan Binnington stopped all 26 shots he faced and became the fourth Team Canada goaltender to record a shutout in an Olympic game involving NHL players. Team Canada has played 224:19 since its last goal against in Olympic competition with NHL players – the longest streak by any team.

FAMILY TIES IN FULL FORCE IN TEAM USA’S TOURNAMENT-OPENING WIN
Avalanche forward Brock Nelson (2-0—2), brothers Quinn (0-2—2) and Jack Hughes (0-2—2) as well as Brady (1-0—1) and Matthew Tkachuk (0-2—2) ignited a Team USA offense that scored at least five goals in an Olympic Winter Games tournament opener that featured NHL players for the third time (7 in 2014 & 6 in 2002).

* Nelson, who netted the game-winning goal and became the ninth different American to score multiple goals in a single period in an Olympic game with NHL players (last: Phil Kessel on Feb. 16, 2014), owns deep family roots to the Winter Olympics. His grandfather, Bill Christian, potted 2-11—13 (7 GP) en route to a gold medal with the United States at the 1960 Winter Olympics, while his uncle, Dave Christian, notched 0-8—8 (7 GP) for the “Miracle On Ice” group that won gold at the 1980 Winter Olympics.

* Senators captain Brady and Panthers forward Matthew combined on the first of five Team USA goals and became the fourth set of brothers to factor on the same tally in an Olympic game involving NHL players. The others: Daniel and Henrik Sedin (5x; last: Feb. 19, 2010 w/ SWE), Jorgen and Kenny Jonsson (Feb. 24, 2006 w/ SWE), Marian and Marcel Hossa (Feb. 18, 2010 w/ SVK) as well as Marcel and David Rodman (Feb. 16, 2014 w/ SLO).

* Jack collected both his assists in the second period. The Devils forward tied the American benchmark for assists in a period during an Olympic Games featuring NHL players, last accomplished by Ryan Suter (0-2—2 in P1; Feb. 19, 2014).

STUTZLE, DRAISAITL POWER TEAM GERMANY TO VICTORY
Senators forward Tim Stützle (2-0—2) and Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl (1-1—2) led Team Germany’s tournament-opening game with two points apiece and helped their country secure its first win at an Olympic Winter Games with NHL players since Feb. 12, 2002 (vs. LAT).

* Draisaitl opened the scoring just 23 seconds into the contest and netted the third-fastest goal to start an Olympic game involving NHL players, behind Jozef Stumpel (0:11 vs. LAT, 2002) and Dmitri Pankov (0:20 vs. USA, 2002). Draisaitl played in his first Olympic game and followed in his father’s footsteps. Peter participated in the 1998 Olympics with NHL players and led Team Germany (tied) with four points in four games (2-2—4).

* Stützle, whose first goal finished as the game winner, became just the second German player to score two goals in an Olympic game featuring NHL players (also Jan Benda, 2 on Feb. 12, 1998). He also became the second German player representing an NHL team to score a game-winning goal, following Uwe Krupp (Feb. 12, 1998 w/ COL).

MEIER PUTS UP MULTI-GOAL GAME TO HELP TEAM SWITZERLAND START OLYMPICS 1-0
Devils forward Timo Meier (2-0—2) scored two of Team Switzerland’s four goals as they earned a shutout win in their opening contest of the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026. It marked the fourth shutout by Team Switzerland in Olympics with NHL players (2014 vs. LAT & CZE, 2006 vs. CAN).

* Meier scored twice in the third period and became the first Swiss NHL player with multiple goals in a single period in an Olympic game involving NHL players. He also became the first NHL player with a multi-goal period in the Olympics since Carl Hagelin tallied twice for Team Sweden in the third period against Slovenia on Feb. 19 in the 2014 Olympic Winter Games. Tim Stützle (Team Germany) and Brock Nelson (Team USA) later joined the Swiss forward with a multi-goal period against Denmark and Latvia, respectively.

FRIDAY’S SLATE INCLUDES SWEDEN-FINLAND RIVALRY ON DISPLAY

The third day of men’s hockey at the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026 will feature a Nordic matchup in Group B between Finland and Sweden, nearly a full year since the two bordering countries met in the 4 Nations Face-Off. Team Sweden is looking to improve to 2-0-0 in the tournament, while Team Finland eyes its first win.

* Nearly a year ago on Feb. 15, 2025, Finland and Sweden met in Montreal during a round robin matchup for the 4 Nations Face-Off where Ducks forward Mikael Granlund scored the overtime winner in a 4-3 victory for Team Finland. A total of 31 players (16 FIN & 15 SWE) who dressed in the contest also played in each team’s opening game of the 2026 Olympics.

* Eeli Tolvanen (SEA) was the lone Finnish skater to find the back of the net in their opening game Wednesday. Tolvanen is appearing in his second Olympics after finishing tied for second in tournament scoring in 2018 (3-6—9 in 5 GP). He can become the fourth Finnish player to score in each of his first two games in an Olympics involving NHL players – the only ones to do so to date: Teemu Selanne (4 GP in 2006), Olli Määttä (2 GP in 2014) and Jarkko Ruutu (2 GP in 2010).

Rasmus Dahlin (BUF) enters the second game after having tallied three assists in Team Sweden’s opener against Italy. Dahlin can become the first Swedish player to begin an Olympics involving NHL players with multiple points in each of their first two games and the sixth to record consecutive multi-point outings at anytime in the tournament. He would join Erik Karlsson (2 GP in 2014), Daniel Alfredsson (2 GP twice in 2006), Mats Sundin (2 GP in 2002) and Nicklas Lidstrom (2 GP in 2002).

Series History

  • All-Time: The East View Stakes, in its 87th running, has been a proving ground for New York-bred fillies since 1936. Recent winners include lightly raced types like last year’s victor, who wired the field at 3-1 odds.
  • Recent Trends: Favorites have won 4 of the last 6 editions, but closers hit the board in 70% of contested-pace renewals. Aqueduct’s 7-furlong distance favors speed (55% wire-to-wire winners in similar stakes), but NY-bred fields often produce upsets at 8-1+ (3 in last 10 years).

NASCAR Cup Series Preview: Daytona 500

The 68th running of the Daytona 500, known as “The Great American Race,” marks the official start of the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season. This iconic event promises high-speed pack racing, dramatic drafting maneuvers, and the potential for game-changing wrecks on one of motorsport’s most famous tracks. As the first points-paying race, it sets the tone for the championship chase, with drivers vying for an early victory and the prestigious Harley J. Earl Trophy. Defending back-to-back winner William Byron aims for an unprecedented three-peat, but faces stiff competition from a field of 40 cars, including veterans and rising stars like rookie Connor Zilisch.

Venue Location and Schedule

The race takes place at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida—a 2.5-mile tri-oval superspeedway known for its steep 31-degree banking in the turns, which enables speeds exceeding 200 mph and promotes intense drafting. The track, opened in 1959, features a 3,800-foot frontstretch and a lake in the infield, with grandstands seating over 100,000 fans.

  • Flag drop is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. ET (green flag drops around 2:45 p.m. ET after pre-race ceremonies).

The event consists of 200 laps (500 miles), divided into three stages: Stage 1 (65 laps), Stage 2 (65 laps), and Stage 3 (70 laps).

  • Broadcast: FOX, MRN Radio, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, and streaming on FOX Sports app or HBO Max.
  • Speedweeks Highlights: Qualifying and the Duels on Thursday, February 12, set the starting lineup, with Joey Logano and Chase Elliott winning the respective Duels to lock in front-row spots alongside pole-sitter Kyle Busch.

Practice sessions and support races (Xfinity and Truck Series) fill Friday and Saturday.

Here’s an aerial view of the speedway during a typical event setup:

Weather Conditions

February weather in Daytona Beach is typically mild but unpredictable, with potential for rain disrupting the superspeedway action. For race day:

  • Forecast: Mostly cloudy skies with highs around 75-79°F and lows in the low 60s. Breezy conditions with south-southeast winds at 5-15 mph, gusting up to 25 mph.

Rain chances start low (20%) in the morning but increase to 60% by late afternoon/evening, with scattered showers and possible thunderstorms.

  • Impact: Dry conditions would favor aggressive drafting, but any precipitation could lead to delays or a shortened race. NASCAR can dry the track in about 90-120 minutes with jet dryers, but persistent rain might postpone the event to Monday, February 16 (as happened in 2020 and 2024).

No extreme heat or cold is expected, keeping tire wear and engine performance consistent.

Track Conditions

Daytona is a high-banked superspeedway emphasizing restrictor-plate racing (now tapered spacers) to control speeds and promote pack-style competition. The asphalt surface, last repaved in 2010, remains smooth but grippy in cooler weather, allowing for three- and four-wide racing. Recent inspections show no major issues, but wet conditions could make the track slick, increasing the risk of multi-car incidents (“The Big One”). Tire compounds from Goodyear are designed for durability in long green-flag runs, with fuel strategy playing a key role in the 500-mile distance.

Expect fast lap times around 45-47 seconds in clean air.

Race History

The Daytona 500, first held in 1959, is NASCAR’s most prestigious event, often compared to the Super Bowl of racing. It has produced legendary moments, from photo finishes to tragic incidents like Dale Earnhardt’s 2001 crash. Key records and highlights:

  • All-Time Winners: Richard Petty holds the record with 7 victories (1964, 1966, 1971, 1973-74, 1979, 1981). Cale Yarborough has 4 (1968, 1977, 1983-84). Five drivers have won back-to-back: Petty (1973-74), Yarborough (1983-84), Sterling Marlin (1994-95), Denny Hamlin (2019-20), and William Byron (2024-25).

Recent Driver Forms

Coming off the 2025 season, where Kyle Larson claimed his second championship, drivers enter with varied momentum. The Clash at Bowman Gray Stadium provided a preseason glimpse, but superspeedway form often differs. Key performers from 2025:

  • Kyle Larson: Champion with 3 wins, 15 top-5s, 22 top-10s; led 1,106 laps. Strong at Daytona historically.
  • Denny Hamlin: Runner-up in points with 6 wins, 14 top-5s; three-time Daytona winner but winless there since 2020.
  • Chase Briscoe: 3 wins, 15 top-5s; defended Southern 500 title and made Championship 4.
  • William Byron: 3 wins, 11 top-5s; back-to-back Daytona champ, seeking three-peat.
  • Ryan Blaney: 3 wins in 2025; defending Coke Zero Sugar 400 winner at Daytona.
  • Chase Elliott: 2 wins, 11 top-5s; won Duel 2, starting 4th.
  • Others: Joey Logano (1 win), Austin Cindric (1 win), Christopher Bell (strong in playoffs but no title).

Rookies like Connor Zilisch add intrigue, with experts predicting breakout potential.

Driver Matchups and Top Contenders

Superspeedways like Daytona emphasize alliances and avoiding wrecks over raw speed. Key matchups:

  • Joey Logano vs. Ryan Blaney (Team Penske Teammates): Both Ford drivers; Logano starts 3rd after Duel win, Blaney a strong drafter with recent Daytona success. Edge: Blaney for consistency.
  • Kyle Busch vs. Chase Elliott: Busch on pole (Chevy), Elliott starting 4th. Busch seeks first Daytona win; Elliott has speed but spotty luck here.
  • Denny Hamlin vs. William Byron: Hamlin (Toyota) has three wins but recent droughts; Byron (Chevy) chases history with Hendrick power.
  • Other Contenders: Austin Cindric (past winner), Brad Keselowski (veteran drafter), Ty Gibbs (rising star predicted for top-3).

Dark horses: Ross Chastain, Bubba Wallace for aggressive moves.

Power Rankings Top 10 Entering Race: 1. William Byron, 2. Kyle Larson, 3. Chase Briscoe, 4. Denny Hamlin, 5. Ryan Blaney, 6. Christopher Bell, 7. Chase Elliott, 8. Joey Logano, 9. Ty Gibbs, 10. Brad Keselowski.

The race format includes two stages of 30 laps each, followed by a 60-lap final stage, emphasizing strategy on fuel and tires.

Expected Weather Conditions

Daytona Beach will see mild conditions on race day with a high of 70°F and low of 57°F. Expect partly cloudy skies, winds from the E at 2-10 mph, humidity around 87%, and no significant precipitation (0 inches expected). NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series Preview: Fresh From Florida 250

Race Details

  • Flag drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET (4:30 p.m. PT, 6:30 p.m. CT). The race is scheduled for 100 laps (250 miles) on the 2.5-mile superspeedway, with stages of 20/40/100 laps.
  • Venue: Daytona International Speedway, 1801 W International Speedway Blvd, Daytona Beach, Florida 32114. This 2.5-mile tri-oval superspeedway features 31-degree banking in the turns, 18-degree banking in the tri-oval, and 3-degree banking on the backstretch. Known for pack racing, high speeds (up to 200 mph), and frequent multi-car incidents (“The Big One”), it’s a drafting-heavy track where alliances and fuel strategy play key roles.
  • TV/Streaming: FS1, NASCAR Racing Network (MRN), SiriusXM NASCAR Radio Channel 90.

The Fresh From Florida 250 is the season opener for the 2026 NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series, marking the 27th running of the event. With 44 entries for 36 spots, qualifying will be crucial (practice Thursday, Feb. 12 at 5:00 p.m. ET; qualifying Friday at 3:00 p.m. ET). The race emphasizes superspeedway skills like drafting, avoiding wrecks, and late-race fuel mileage.

Expected Weather Conditions

Daytona Beach will experience increasing cloudiness with occasional rain in the afternoon on Friday, Feb. 13. High of 76°F, low of 60°F, with a 55% chance of precipitation. Winds N at 14 mph, humidity around 55-87%. Sunrise at 7:04 a.m., sunset at 6:13 p.m. If rain hits, it could delay the start or create slick conditions early, but the forecast suggests a mostly dry evening window.

Track Conditions

Daytona’s asphalt superspeedway is expected to be fast and grippy, promoting drafting packs and speeds over 190 mph. Caution speed is 70 mph. If showers occur, the track could turn good, increasing tire wear and emphasizing handling over power. No major resurfacing reported for 2026, so expect similar grip levels to 2025, where average lap times were around 47-48 seconds.

Race History

The Fresh From Florida 250 (formerly DRIVE4COPD 300 and others) has been the Truck Series opener at Daytona since 2000, contested over 100 laps (250 miles). It’s notorious for close finishes (15 of last 20 decided by <0.2 seconds) and high caution counts (average 10, lasting 35 laps). Chevrolet has dominated, winning 8 of the last 10. Past winners include Corey Heim (2025, after Parker Kligerman DQ), Nick Sanchez (2024), Zane Smith (2023, 2022), Ben Rhodes (2021), Grant Enfinger (2020), Austin Hill (2019), Johnny Sauter (2018), Kaz Grala (2017), and Tyler Reddick (2016). Average winner starts from 8th; race record 1:59:53 by Ty Gibbs (2022). Trends favor Richard Childress Racing (4 straight wins 2022-2025) and veterans like Sauter (most Daytona Truck wins).

Recent Driver Forms

Based on the 2025 season (Corey Heim champion with 12 wins, 4040 points; Ty Majeski runner-up with 0 wins, 4035 points; Kaden Honeycutt 3rd with 0 wins, 4034 points; Tyler Ankrum 4th with 1 win, 4023 points; Layne Riggs 5th with 3 wins, 2297 points). Preseason rankings for 2026 highlight Riggs (No. 1), Majeski (No. 2), Christian Eckes (No. 3), Honeycutt (No. 4), and Gio Ruggiero (No. 5). NHL Morning Skate from Milan – Feb. 13, 2026

* Panthers trio Anton Lundell,Eetu Luostarinen and Niko Mikkola combined to help Team Finland defeat rival Team Sweden in an Olympics with NHL participation for the first time since 1998.

* Oilers captain Connor McDavid joined Teemu Selanne with a rare Olympic feat as he recorded his second straight three-point performance to help Team Canada skate to its 12th consecutive win in Olympics involving NHL players.

* Team Germany and Team USA will look to maintain their perfect starts during Group C round robin games Saturday.

TEAM FINLAND VICTORIOUS IN RIVALRY GAME VERSUS TEAM SWEDEN

Team Finland jumped out to a 2-0 lead through the first period on goals by Senators defenseman Nikolas Matinpalo as well as Panthers forward Anton Lundell and held onto their edge for the remainder of the game in a 4-1 victory over rival Team Sweden. NHLers accounted for every player dressed in the Finland-Sweden game, which marked the first all-NHL player vs. all-NHL player matchup of the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026.

* Team Finland earned their first victory over Team Sweden in Olympics with NHL players since a 2-1 win in the quarterfinals of the first-ever Olympics with NHL participation (1998). Team Finland had previously fallen to their rivals in the 2006 Playoff Round (SWE: 3-2), 2010 Round Robin (SWE: 3-0) and 2014 Playoff Round (SWE: 2-1).

* A trio of two-time Stanley Cup-winning Finns from the Panthers teamed up on the winning goal, scored by Lundell with assists to Eetu Luostarinen and Niko Mikkola. Team Finland’s roster has combined to win the Stanley Cup 11 times, the second most of any nation in the tournament behind Team Canada (21).

* The duo of Lundell and Luostarinen play together often in Florida and have combined on 40 NHL regular-season goals as well as 17 playoff tallies. The pair teamed up to factor on another high-profile game-winning goal, both earning assists on Matthew Tkachuk’s Cup-clinching goal in Game 6 of the 2025 Stanley Cup Final.

McDAVID POWERS TEAM CANADA TO VICTORY WITH ANOTHER THREE-POINT OUTING

Connor McDavid (1-2—3) posted his second three-point outing in as many games while Sidney Crosby (1-0—1) added to his lofty Olympic career totals as Team Canada skated to its second straight win to begin the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026. Team Canada has earned 12 consecutive victories at Olympics involving NHL players dating to Feb. 23, 2010.

* McDavid became the third Team Canada skater to record multiple three-point games in Olympics involving NHLers, joining Jarome Iginla (Feb. 16, 2010 & Feb. 24, 2002) and Joe Sakic (Feb. 24, 2002 & Feb. 16, 1998). The Oilers captain (1-5—6) also surpassed Marian Hossa (2-3—5 in 2006 w/ SVK) and Teemu Selanne (4-1—5 in 2006 w/ FIN) for the most points through their team’s first two games of an Olympic tournament with NHL participation.

* Crosby scored his first goal of the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026 and his fifth in the Olympics overall, which is tied with Shea Weber (5-7—12 in 13 GP) for the fourth most by a Team Canada player in Olympics with NHL participation behind Iginla (10-4—14 in 19 GP), Dany Heatley (6-4—10 in 13 GP) and Sakic (6-7—13 in 16 GP). In the process, the Penguins captain also tied Weber for the third-most points by a Team Canada skater in Olympics with NHL players, trailing only Iginla and Sakic.

* It wasn’t just veterans finding the score sheet for Canada – 19-year-old Macklin Celebrini became the third teenager to score a goal in consecutive games in Olympics involving NHL players, joining Olli Määttä (2 GP in 2014 w/ FIN) and Evgeni Malkin (2 GP in 2006 w/ RUS). The Sharks forward also became the third teenager to score multiple goals in a single Olympic tournament involving NHL players, following Määttä (3 in 2014 w/ FIN) and Malkin (2 in 2006 w/ RUS).

CZECH NHL PLAYERS HELP LIFT COUNTRY TO COMEBACK WIN
After Avalanche forward Martin Necas (1-1—2) opened the scoring for Team Czechia, Team France responded with three goals of their own, but Bruins forward David Pastrnak (1-1—2) evened the score with the first of four straight Czech tallies to lift the country to its third comeback win in Olympics involving NHL players (also Feb. 15, 2006 & Feb. 18, 1998). It marked just the third time Czechia has scored six goals in an Olympic game featuring NHL players, following Feb. 15, 2002 (8 vs. GER) and Feb. 15, 1998 (8 vs. KAZ).

* Necas, along with Canucks forward David Kampf, assisted on the first of two Czech goals in a span of 48 seconds in the third period, which marked the country’s third-fastest two tallies in an Olympic game involving NHL players following Feb. 18, 2014 (0:29) and Feb. 24, 2006 (0:45).

* Necas and Pastrnak were two of four Czech NHL players to pick up two points against France, marking the second time Czechia has had at least that many record multiple points in an Olympic game involving NHL players, following Feb. 15, 2002. The other two were Stars forward Radek Faksa (0-2—2) and Canucks defenseman Filip Hronek (0-2—2), who helped set up Czechia’s fifth shorthanded goal in Olympics with NHL player participation.

TEAM SLOVAKIA OUTLASTS HOSTS, REMAIN UNDEFEATED

In a close contest that saw host Team Italy score with the goaltender pulled in the final five minutes of regulation to move within a goal, Team Slovakia held on to win for the second time in as many games and opened an Olympics with NHL participation with consecutive wins for the second time. In the 2006 Winter Olympics, Slovakia won each of their first five games in the round robin portion of the schedule before falling to Team Czechia in the playoff round.

A seven‑time All‑Star (2013–18, ’22), he has recorded 11 seasons of 20+ home runs, tied with Bryce Harper and Freddie Freeman for the second‑most since 2012, trailing only Giancarlo Stanton (12). Goldschmidt will represent Team USA for the third time in this year’s World Baseball Classic, having previously won gold in 2017 and silver in 2023.
